AVC MPEG-4 was used by Universal Movie "The Interpreter" on the HD-DVD too.

and there are more than 10 Movies on the HD-DVD that is encoded with AVC MPEG-4, so what's the problem here?
but, HD-DVD supporters are interested in Higher Quality Image by using the superior VC-1 Codec.
AVC MPEG-4 vs VC-1, we know who is the winner here.
more efficient encryption? Blu-ray still uses the AACS, give me 1 movie the use the BD+ security scheme, none.
more space and higher bitrate is not an advantage, since you're getting a better HD Experience on the HD-DVD so far. VC-1 is a god damn great codec!
