Just played for over 10 hours. Haven't been this engrossed in a single player game for a long time, and I play a ton of games. It's incredible, and it feels like it's just getting started. I usually hope games are short but I don't want this to end anytime soon. Luckily, I'm reading it's pretty long.

Barely scratched the surface (3-4 hours in), but I'm digging it. The game just oozes charm and attention to detail. I can definitely see myself getting lost in it all.
On the graphics side, I had been playing on Balanced on PS5 but the framerate is just too inconsistent for me (even on a VRR-enabled set), so I had to switch to Performance. It's a shame, since the visuals do take a noticeable hit. It still looks great though.

Its incredible, the story does zip along pretty quick though. I just stall it as much as possible so I can make it last longer. I initially was gonna do a quick(ish) playthrough as Ravenclaw and then a more through playthrough with another house, but when I learned there is pretty much zero difference other than the common room and a couple of minor differences in one or two quests dialogue, I decided to just do a thorough run through on my first file. Absolutely mesmerised by this game though

Not sure if series x runs better, but i uncapped FR, turned off all other effects on balanced and it runs 50-60. It can be a little choppy when transitioning between areas but otherwise its very playable. I am fussy about framerate as well so I would def knock it down to performance if it was bothersome

I keep forgetting I can fast travel within Hogwart's. Thing is I don't mind running around, looking for new stuff. I am currently trying to return all of the moths to their mirrors. I have also found some pretty good gear - one orange robe - but haven't yet learned how to apply traits and upgrades. I am guessing a class will cover that later.

I think I saw a comparison video showing XSX was better on Balanced mode, so that could be the case. I don't think PS5 is hitting 60 fps on Balanced anywhere apart from maybe very small rooms. I won't say it's bad on PS5, but I think I've just been spoiled by 60 fps and have become overly sensitive to something that's doing even 40-50 fps when the smoother option is there.

The quests/assignments are the same for every house, it's even written in the prima guide. There are slight differences in one or two main quests and thats it. The person you quoted was correct, there is no 'wide range' of differences at all.

You can lock on with R3 and switch targets with the right stick. If you don't do that your character won't always attack what's in the center of the screen so when facing multiple enemies it's recommended to lock on. You can also aim manually holding L2.
The game doesn't explain this right away but feed-drips you combat tutorial info at specific moments.
The game's combat is interesting and surprisingly difficult once you fight like four enemies who all have different color defenses. You really have to juggle all your spells and use the right guardbreakers on the right colors. It can get pretty hectic, especially when the fire spell gets involved because that only works from close range.
Almost turns into a rhythm-style game.

I’m quoting myself. To give an impression. My daughter was getting frustrated that the confirm and cancel face buttons were opposite than what she’s used to on the switch. I had to break it to her that Nintendo is the only one that’s opposite. I did think about changing it in the menu, but I’d rather she adapt. Especially if she’s gonna play more of my titles on the PS5.I have her learning the controller right now. Hogwarts after dinner. She’s only used to switch.
Edit: Not gonna lie. Seeing my two autistic daughters having fun together right now brought some tears to my eyes.

In a side quest where some student asked me to collect her stinky marbles I kept them instead of returning them and she hasn’t had anything nice to say in passing since. There are also a bunch of “maybe you should pay me more” options that remind me of The Witcher lol

You can change hairstyle and color later on, yes. Same goes for scars and I believe also eyebrows style.

PS5. The game takes place well before the books and movies so I'm not sure rewatching them will be necessary, although I dunno how many nods to fans I'm missing by going in blind.
I've turned it all off and it seems to play fine that way if you can remember your spell button binds. But yes, dynamic HUDs are way better.
Gear system is pretty bad, and the secrets are not very rewarding at all, but that’s not enough to keep it from being intrinsically fun. Overall it’s a charming and functional RPG with a lot of different spells and things to do. Between classes, main quests, spell unlock tasks, secrets, side quests, and world exploration, it’s staying very engaging throughout.
