High Tension is an expertly crafted slasher flick with an ending that you will either hate or be amused by. I lean more toward the latter, but I would have made a couple changes in execution. I can see why some people hate the ending, but they can't deny the skill on display.

Martyrs has a lot of plot. It's kind of a revenge movie, kind of something else. A great film to watch if you want your perception of so-called "torture porn" destroyed.
 
Most every good horror movie has been posted, some posted I hate though.

Here is one that is lesser known, that actually gives you the uneasy feeling from watching it.

Dead Silence

I love horror movies but the majority just stop being scary once you grow up. Hell I was scared of movies like "The Stuff" and "Return of the Living Dead" as a kid. 2 movies that are more comedy than horror, when I rewatched them when I got older. Dead Silence has great atmosphere and the ending it actually pretty good.

I thought it was gonna be like Boogeyman ( I was furious I paied 9 bucks to see this garbage!) but it was anything but.

I was surprised to find Hostel almost a comedy, but I've steered clear of the Saws. Martyrs it is.

I've argued with friends over this, luckily got it out of my system. But besides two cheesy scenes (one of them being the fucking ending) everything else in that movie feels like the kinds of "real" ghost stories people tell, the shit that actually happens to people you know. (Supposedly. I don't believe in ghosts.)

I totally see why others find it boring, but I'm the kind of person that lets my imagination run wild, and this and Blair Witch give me plenty of rope.

edit: Bones below makes it 2 to 1 for Martyrs.
 
I recently viewed High Tension, Martyrs, and the Human Centipede on Netflix.

Each film is dreadful in the sense that they make Saw 2 seem like an Academy Award winning masterpiece. The actual 'horror' is laughably weak; the gore and violence too cartoonish to be anything other than temporarily gross. Nothing is allowed to develop - characters, plot, tension - and nothing is left to the imagination.

Both these movies scared the shit out of me. More about the fear of the unknown that has you turning the light on when you go to bed. I know a lot of people like to hate on PA, but it is one of the few horror movies to give me genuine fear.

Hostel is basically a re-telling of Hansel and Gretel. The idea that anyone can consider it "torture porn" is baffling to me as there is hardly any onscreen violence in it and our sympathies are with the victims.
 
REC is the best I think, haven't watched the sequel yet.
Paranormal Activity is another, though it won't scare you, it's more of a "feel good" horror film.

I liked Let The Right One In (the Swedish one at least) and The Orphanage. Though, there's tons of horror movies I have yet not seen, I'll subscribe to this thread for sure.

Edit: I'm crazy about Antichrist too!
 
The Thing, The Descent, and Prince of Darkness (this movie is kinda low budget but I still get chills every now and then from it.)

Haadn't thought of it like that, Hansel and Gretel. Good point. I enjoyed it for a nice little horror movie, and fuck, it had slapstick in it.

Also, anyone seen Lake Mungo? Its on Instant Watch, Austrailian doc style. Very slow and meditative, and barely any actual scares, but I enjoyed the tone. I can't recommend it right out, it has a retarded plot twist in the middle, but I still liked it.
 
Overall I liked Let the Right One In a bit better than Let Me In, but Let Me In did make a couple of improvements over the original (such as the cop and the lack of cats), so I'd recommend watching both of them.

I watched "Anneliese: The Exorcist Tapes" last night on instant watch, definitely would not recommend it to anyone. It almost seemed like a rip off of "The Exorcist", some scenes being almost identical. Bad acting, very slow paced, and worst of all they continuously throw in old school film distortion to try and make it seem creepy...The only good part was listening to the actual audio tapes from the real exorcism which were thrown in random parts of the film. Watching the movie left me very disappointed and sparked the idea for this thread, which has probably been done before. I figured if I can keep someone from wasting their time on one crappy movie, I've done my job here haha.

Yes, it is worth watching. The moral outrage over it was really quite amusing. People have a hard time telling the difference between content and intent.

As for your friend's reading of the film, there is some of that, but it is given more focus in the sequel, which is also worth a watch. I don't want to say too much about how or why, because that might ruin some of the fun.

If you go into these films with an open mind, and try to avoid/forget as many spoilers as you can, you will be entertained. Also, don't be a sissy or a lazy movie watcher.
 
horror movies are great to just mix it up. watching them back to back just ruins them so take your time with them.

jaws - you'll be scared to use the toilet in fear of sharks coming to get you
Dark Water (japanese version) & Rosemary's baby - both deal with the same premise but with the roles switched. terrifying on a level of instincts to protect your family.
the wizard of oz- the monkeys still scare me.

Saw it last year or the one before? Don't know, but i thought the film was very well made an extremely suspenseful at times. I'd recommend it.

I thought Martyrs was watchable but not really a movie that I found to be very frightening.

Good horror movies are rare these days... I guess Saw, albeit a good film, is the culprit for the demise.

Dog Soldiers and Dead Snow (subbed only) are also a good thrillers with humor in it. I love these kind of movies too because they aim to make you laugh one second then scare you the next (and genuine scare and plot not like scary movies BS). These movies are rare because its hard to get them right.

I just watched it. Actually, you can't discuss it much without spoiling but it is extremely intersting and the secenery is very immersive. Great great movie that could have been granted an Academy Award, even if it would be only for the unsettling atmosphere of the asylum. Director of Photography and actors did really well.
 
Quite surprised by the recommendations for the US version of The Ring. I thought that was complete trash. When I first watched the Japanese original however, the tension was brilliant. Superb build-up throughout.

Ju-On is also superior to its American remake, IMO. Another film that messed me up somewhat when I first watched it.

The problem now though is that you know what to expect, so I find Horror films worthless to watch more than once, unless they're outright entertaining and awesome to watch regardless of whether or not they frighten you, like The Thing, Alien, etc. These films do not intimidate me. I just find them really enjoyable.

I've yet to see anything that's unsettled me much since the first viewings of the first two film examples I mentioned. This thread will come in handy for me to reach out to other films I may have missed out on.
 
Ringu was boring and completely unscary till the TV scene at the end. I haven't seen the American version though, I guess it's probably worse.
 
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The bleak and depressing atmosphere the filmmakers achieved is unparalleled. Greatest horror movie of all time.

Also, Inside (À l'intérieur).

The music is also very very awesome. i love the soundtrack.
 
Noroi: The Curse is one of the best horror films I've seen in a long time. Though it's very j-horror and also it's also mockumentary so if you're not too keen on either of those things than stay away, however if you enjoy those kinds of films it's a must see.

The Evil Dead - scared the shit out of me when I was a child.

[REC] - scared the shit out of me as an adult

Session 9 / The Nameless (AKA Los Sin Nombre) - psychological horror at its best
 
Anyone remember that clip from that horror movie with a girl tied up or something and a guy wearing a mask enters the room and slowly crawls to her and gets up and injects her with something? That seemed like a good horror movie...

The Poughkeepsie Tapes. It's a good faux-documentary type of horror movie.

This is the only horror film I can remember watching in the past five years that actually made me feel afraid.

Also, concerning Martyrs...I did go into it knowing nothing about the movie/plot/etc.

After the first ten minutes, I was highly intrigued, definitely into it. About thirty minutes later I was shaking my head and facepalming. By the end, I couldn't believe how silly the whole thing was. It's not quite on the level of High Tension in terms of sheer stupidity, but it is similar in how they had this really good concept and managed to shit all over it.

Even enthusiasts of the film have to admit the movie is highly flawed. I guess parts of it can be enjoyable but I can't recommend it.

Ginger Snaps, Itchi the Killer, Nosferatu, May, Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the dead (original), Last House on the Left(original), Sleepaway Camp.

I don't really scare any more, i'm shell-shocked 8-} , these are just some of my favorites.
