Yeah A Serbian Film isn't just for any horror movie addict..I think if you can tolerate The Human Centipede then maybe you might make it through A serbian film. Also these movies are more of fucked up gore thrillers than horror.
Meh, The Human Centipede did nothing to me, maybe I'm just really fucked up or something, I was expecting to be horrified. Left me dissatisfied.

well the first half of Martyrs really scared and creeped the hell out of me....so much that I ended up throwing away the cover of the DVD case, lol (my cover had the creepy bathtub one)

There is a subbed or dubbed version right?

While I don't consider Martyrs scary at all, but it's an amazing movie that everyone should watch.

Personally, the scariest movie I saw was House on Haunted Hill (the remake from 1999). I was 9 at the time so I can't say if, as an adult, it's scary like I thought it was...

I hate those shock horror films. They're not scary to me, just nauseating. Hostel, Saw, and those creepy Japanese films are stuff I just abhor. Though The Ring... okay, that was creepy to me.

I prefer stuff that has a creepy atmosphere or something... I love The Thing, and I quite like Event Horizon and In the Mouth of Madness. Session 9 is a heck of a slow burner, but the ending hits pretty hard. Recently, Trick 'R Treat is something I've really enjoyed. It's a very fun movie, if not exactly the scariest.

I couldn't get past the stupid and unrealistic choice people made all the way through the movie.
Car breaks down? Walk through the woods! Partner got shot? Walk right into the room and stand directly in the place he was hit without even taking a glance around the room!

1. The Ring (US version)

Well shot, well written translation. Probably the only film to make me uneasy in recent years.

2. Candyman

Scared the crap out of me when I was at school. Bloody Mary + mirror

3. Shutter (Tai version)

Made me scrutinise blurs in my photos for a few months :(

That's all. Other very good horror films have scared me whilst watching them; none have stuck with me like the above (except Fred Krueger). Something primal about their subject matter scares my monkey brain.

EDIT:
Good call on The Creepshow films. The Raft stuck with me for years.

I really wish they did more anthology/short stories in horror films.....although not really scary, I was always thoroughly entertained by movies like Creepshow, Trick or Treat, etc.

That's not really the intent of Martyrs at all. If you found it nasty and unpleasant to watch, maybe that's a good thing? It's not supposed to have any fun or catharsis. Unlike "shock" movies, all of the gore in Martyrs has a purpose which is thoroughly justified within the film and is meant to be unnerving and unpleasant - something that a lot of horror movies seem to miss entirely for me. Audition is similar in that sense (and I'm kind of kicking myself for not listing that instead of The Beyond.)

Probably the most genuinely horrifying film I've ever seen outside of the Russian war movie Come and See.
I dont really find these new wawe shock/gore films unpleasent to watch but just rather boring. Internet has dulled my senses long time ago for such material. All the gore some of the directors like to play with is just waste of time for me. I like my horror movies to have good story, atmoshphere and suspense. Haven't seen audition in over 10 years so I don't remember if it was any good, book is great tho.

It's not really scary, but I have have a soft spot for Tales from the Hood. David Alan Grier's finest hour.

I'm still wondering why TrT doesn't have a sequel. From what I've heard, the director has an idea for it, but there's been no movement on it, which sorta sucks.

Okay so this might not be the right thread to ask this in but we'll see.

The only, only, ONLY thing that has any effect on me in horror movies is ultra-quick flashes of dead or brutally injured people. If anyone has seen From Dusk Till Dawn where
George Clooney walks in on his brother's murder in the hotel room
or in Sunshine where
the crew enters the vacant ship as images of the dead original crew start flashing on screen
then you know what I'm talking about.

I want more of that. Without spoiling when it happens in the movie, can you guys recommend some movies that have more of this?

Oh yeh, that movie was riddled with shit like that that made no sense. Story wise, it was absolutely shocking. The ending especially. I think it's main attraction was just the concept of it, but to be honest I've seen way worse.

Studio abandoned the film after changing heads. It was not given a proper release in case it overshadowed other films on the slate. That's why it sat on the shelf for so long. If they had given it a real theatrical distribution, there would already be a sequel.

Great. But Martyrs is not a shock movie. Have you even seen it or are you just prejudging based on its reputation?

This.

Personally, the scariest I ever watched was the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

However, my favorites...
Evil Dead
It's a really low budget, dark humor movie from a young Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi. Definitely not as horror as most others listed in the thread, but it's a classic. Go into it expecting it to be campy and you'll love it.
Evil Dead II is a must, if you watch the first.
It's more of a reimagining than a sequel, despite what the back of the box tells you. It's much better paced, and it takes itself far less serious allowing Campbell's acting to shine, and Raimi to do some insanely awesome things.

So stupid. Such a great movie, incompetence must be the only answer here.

But, apparently the TrT twitter tweeted in March that 'Sam WILL return', so...

maybe a sequel's coming!

I don't remember seeing George Clooney in Dawn of the Dead.

The only movie that has creeped me out enough to have to turn every light in the house (and that still gives me the creeps when I'm alone at home) is the Exorcist, but that's because I watched it when I was like 12.

Every other good horror movie I've watched since has been ok, I guess. Some have unsettling moments but once the movie is over the feeling is gone.

Think the Clooney scene you are talking about was Dust till Dawn, not Dawn of the Dead

Suspiria is a terrible movie. I rented it from my library and was completely disappointed.

I think Halloween is perhaps the best horror movie, but it's so non-violent that it's almost more of a thriller. And if you count thrillers as horror movies, then Psycho is the best horror movie. Dawn of the Dead and The Exorcist are probably the best horror movies outside of those two.

But I pretty much think horror is a terrible genre, so take all that with a grain of salt.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (i like the remake more than the original)
Wrong Turn (first one, skip 2 & 3)
The Hills Have Eyes (first one, second one is "ok")
Wolf Creek
Motel
Reeker (really liked the idea)
Hostel
The Hitcher

Yeah, i really like movies like those.

Event Horizon is the exact movie you're looking for.
After this and the first reply to this thread I will definitely be checking it out this weekend. Thanks.

Yes you are correct, edited mistake! I always get those two titles mixed up :P

You should specify original or remake for the bolded.

There are a lot of good movies here that arent that scary (dont get me wrong, not all of them listed) I enjoyed most of what's been posted, but again, they didn't give me that "going to go ahead and turn the light on" feeling.

But the american Ring is definitely one. I was shocked to see the Japanese version to be a little cheesier, not as tight.

For me, Exorcist III. The ending is crap, but there are probably five or six scenes that got me good. I first saw it in college, and I woke up three times that night from nightmares, and that shit never happens to me, not from movies.

edit:

paranormal activity

I thought we weren't allowed to mention this ;) I won't respond to a flame war, but I agree. Creeped me out.

Watched Insidious last night and fuck. First movie in a while to spook me out. Gets kinda cheesy near the end plot-wise, but the spooky parts are still scary.

The remake of The Hills have Eyes isn't too bad, if you ask me.

The rape scene is one of the most disturbing things I've seen on film.
Jesus.

The Thing
Alien
The Descent

start here.

Why the hell would he start here? The third act is a fucking mess and ruins anything the rest of the move established. It does have some genuine moments, though.

Start with Alien or The Thing, or The Haunting.

original texas chainsaw massacre wont have you checking your house but will have you avoiding state highways and back water country areas....some sick bastards.

Joy Ride is a good horror/thriller too.

Feel the same way about in The Mouth of Madness.

Most of these aren't even horror/scary movies, they're just disturbing ones. Also I wouldn't put Human Centipede remotely on the same level as Martyrs. Centipede was just bizarre to watch, but it never really showed anything. Martyrs is just brutal.

edit- also I've found that as you get older it's much harder to find a movie that genuinely freaks you out. The genre produces some real stinkers and generic stuff, but even the best of the best reallly don't get it done anymore.

Antichrist. Not really traditional horror but enjoyed it a lot.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The original. Still scary shit today.
Jacobs Ladder. Pretty amazing movie, inspired team silent to make silent hill.

If I hated Frontier(s) and Audition, should I even bother with Martyrs or High Tension? They look to be in a similar vein, and therefore, not scary, just gory.

Frontier(s) is practically a Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, so much that I wonder if it was supposed to be. Except that I didn't find it scary at all.

This movie used to scare the piss out of me.

It won't anymore ;) I saw for the first time a few weeks ago. I loved it, but it was pretty cheesy.

Ah, oh well. Such is horror films - they rarely age well. I remember the "transmission from the future" part freaked me out.

These are all very different films. Any comparison between them is tenuous at best.

Anyone seen the movie "The Strangers"? Seems like a creepy concept, but never seen it. I think supernatural/religous horror type films freak me out the most, partially because it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. Whereas a movie based around a monster of some sort, really doesn't have the same effect. I've been IBDMing most of these films, looks like I'm gonna have a weekend horror film fest haha.

Ok, discounting Audition, I really thought those three had similar tones. Good to know.

Specifically, are Marytyrs and High Tension low on plot and big on gore? Because I felt Frontiers was and it turned me off.

Easily my favorite part, and the mirror stuff. But I loved it, a pure blast. You don't see a lot of satanic movies about physicists.

icarus-daedelus said:
Yes, absolutely. I hated High Tension, and you are exactly right about Frontier(s).

I know nothing about Martyrs. I dont mind gore at all, but not if thats all there is.

Strangers was just horrible. Avoid like the plague.

edit: Sorry, I was going to add this as an edit to my earlier post.

Insidious, except for the last 1/3.

It's a shame, too. The budget really rears its ugly head at the end of the movie.

The original 'Black Christmas

I tried watching this the other day and couldnt make it past the 20 minute mark. I wanted every single character in that movie dead dead DEAD. What a bunch of asshats, the whole lot of them.
