I finish this the other day. Overall I'd say 8/10, miles above the previous season(s) save season one. The only cop-out was the assassination attempt, it really didn't fit the guy's character imo. I also feel the Republican opponent could have been given more character development; it felt like he came out of no where @ the end of the season. Also, putting the country on war footing over a dead hostage, needed to have been something a bit more drastic (large venue terrorist attack). Other than that, everything else was spot on.

Finished it last night, really liked this season. Though, I also liked last season and it seems like people here hated it.
There are times when I look at the plot and laugh a little bit about how ridiculous some things are, but that's one of the things I like about the show. It it were a realistic political simulation, I would never watch it. It needs the craziness and the unlikely.

I kinda feel they wasted the first half though. Now it seems to be business as usual again and I love this show so the first half is kinda iffy.
It was essential to undo the damage to Claire's character from Season 3. Most of the weakest parts of this season were damage control from Season 3.
Yeah and that's a bummer. They could have done so much more with their time. It kinda felt like two mini seasons.

Well it makes sense I think:
For one, they were distant early on - although yeah I guess he could have slept around. But not sure if he was close enough to anyone to pull it off. Then he got shit and basically has been recovering and much weaker than usual. So again, not many opportunities to go have any relations. I think he realizes that which allows him in part go encourage Claire's open behavior.

where they both stare down while everyone is disgusted, then Frank does his speech and they both look into the screen. GOAT. It's the best when they're team Underwood.
And I had chills when Frank was threatening Cathy. Kevin Spacey killed it.

Watched episode 1 on Monday night and was kind of meh on it....watched the next 4 last night, and I'll probably get through another 4 tonight. Yeah, this season is exponentially better than 3.
This is how I always viewed their relationship anyway.
They were never equals and Freddy knew that. Watching Frank go from Congressman to President while Freddy loses his business and ends up getting a job as a handout couldn't have endeared Frank to Freddy either.
Overall, I loved this season after being less than impressed by the last 2 seasons. My biggest problems with the characters are mirrored in the thread. I still can't stand Doug
and I was actually sad when the writer returned. He's just awful and seeing him wandering the White House searching for Clair was pathetic. I understand how he fits into the Underwood's life but I just don't like him.
Doug spoilers:
He is the personification of creepy dude. As soon as he started constantly looking at the images of the dead man's wife and then listening to her voice mail over and over, I figured we had another Rachel situation on our hands. I was surprised at how close they seemed to get so suddenly but whatever. I just don't understand what any of this is supposed to add to the story. Is he supposed to be sympathetic? I realize he is devoted to Frank but he hasn't really been relevant since season 2. The good ideas always come from someone else lately and he's as much a hindrance as anything else.
Ultimately, I enjoyed this season a lot and hope for more scorched earth shenanigans next season.

Dunbar was basically nothing in this season. She was a good antagonist in the past and now pooof, nothing.
Frank would be dead without Doug's intervention with the donor list, which sure seems like another scandal waiting to blow up in public sometime during season five.

I don't think Doug needs to be close to the dead man's wife in order for a scandal to occur though. The woman who helped get Frank to the top of the donor list knows what happened and that is independent of Doug's relationship with the widow. Including the relationship in the show only means more scenes of him looking at her pictures, listening to her voicemail, and boring trips to visit her where he lies and uses her to make himself feel better as if he's some sympathetic character. I'd rather we focus on almost any other character and scenario.
I don't like Doug at all and I find his actions tedious. I understand on the creep level why he's close to the dead man's wife. I'm honestly just tired of seeing him selfishly victimize innocent women. I'd had enough of this last season with Rachel when he chose to kill her and I am annoyed that he's doing it again.
I like his interactions and relationship with Frank though.

Of course, but knowing her personally gives him a much better chance of avoiding a scandal if she was somehow able to find out what happened to her husband.

That's fair but I still think that because of his loyalty to Frank, and his own culpability, he would already want to avoid scandal. And again, I just don't like him enough to want this new angle. So finally finished it. Really good season. Was so disappointed in the last season which was such a misstep quality wise. This season started out a bit stale but once the ball got rolling it kept on rolling. Really looking forward to the next season now.

Enjoyed it a lot more than S3, for sure. It had its fair share of "uuuuh wtf" moments (and not in a good way) but a huge improvement, for sure.
Yeah, I really can't tell if I like either of them. I think Joel Kinnaman may have just been miscast.
Paul Sparks/Yates...I just don't really care for him. I think the character is potentially interesting, but I just can't get into him (or his dialogue).

It's getting to the point for me where im tired of them just straight up outclassing the roster, like as if most of the people in the white house just got into politics a week ago and just skidding by each time as if they had everything planned out perfectly on some "all according to keikaku" shit. It was almost the problem I had with BB after awhile. It gets old.

Claire will obviously be president now. Ever since episode 5 I've been thinking that will probably be the direction they take. Maybe not straight up assassination but she will take over

The pulled a remarkable turnaround with him this season. Where I thought he was one of the most pointless, boring vestigial characters last season, they went in an interesting direction with him this time around.

The second half is definitely stronger, although episode 4 had me fucked up. I was really upset at my sweet bisexual prince, Meechum, biting the dust. That was very upsetting :< The moment with him and Frank in the hallway was really sweet and nice.
I love Claire's new thing with Tom, and I love that Frank is alright with it. Their marriage is fucking incredible and I am so envious of it. The scene where they all have breakfast together is just so fucking cool.

As for this season I can't write to much about it right now cause I'm on mobile and I can't remember how to spoiler tag things but overall I loved it. Not as much as season one and parts of season 2 but the characters especially are as good as they were in season 1. Fantastic job by Netflix and everyone involved getting this show back to the levels it started at

I agree and it's too bad, because I really like the actor Michael Kelly. But his recovery last season was tedious, the fakeout with Rachel being dead and then not, and the fact that he ended up killing her anyway was just bad storytelling (besides for the great jump-cut showing her dead). The character didn't grow in any way, he just learned to be more ruthless for Frank. Doug's character this season was treading a lot of the same ground as S3 and it's tedious unless you pretend that season never happened. It would have been so much more interesting for him to let Rachel live and become "flawed" by accepting that there's a potential scandal out there, but that's one thing he won't do for Frank. Him killing her anyway was shocking, but it makes the character way too irredeemable for me to care again.

I wasn't really happy with where the relationship went in season 3 but I think that the built up anger and resentment between them was handled very well this season, particularly with [episode 1:]

Claire hit Frank with the KKK stuff, things started getting interesting (especially the scene when Frank found out - soooo good).
those trippy scenes with Frank and Claire trying to kill each other. I was disappointed to see Lucas's loser face again though. He's annoying and watching him prostitute himself was just gross. I assumed that we would be watching Lucas try to take Frank down for the rest of the season, like we watched Doug chase that hooker for an entire season or two.
The assassination attempt on Frank Underwood was handled extremely well, imo, and I did not see it coming. It brought a new dynamic to the show by showing us a world without Frank while also dealing with our Heather Dunbar problem. It also killed Meechem so no more threesomes.
With Frank gone, Claire was given another opportunity to prove herself after the disaster that was her time as ambassador. It was great to see her not failing for once. It feels it's been a long time since I've seen her in her bad ass form. The fact that it was Petrov who she took down made it even better since he's awesome (and her bully 
). Now I am just happy to see Claire and Frank back together. I've always preferred them as a team and I love watching them scheme together, manipulate together, and lick their wounds together after a major defeat.
