How To Train Your Dragon - In Theaters June 13

From three-time Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois, the creative visionary behind DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, comes a stunning live-action reimagining of the film that launched the beloved franchise.
On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.

With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.
As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader. The film also stars Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA nominee Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).
How to Train Your Dragon is written, produced and directed by DeBlois. It is also produced by three-time Oscar® nominee Marc Platt (Wicked, La La Land) and Emmy winner Adam Siegel (Drive, 2 Guns). How To Train Your Dragon is part of the Filmed For IMAX® Program, which offers filmmakers IMAX® technology to help them deliver the most immersive movie experience to audiences around the world.

Inspired by Cressida Cowell’s New York Times bestselling book series, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon franchise has captivated global audiences, earning four Academy Award® nominations and grossing more than $1.6 billion at the global box-office. Now, through cutting-edge visual effects, DeBlois transforms his beloved animated saga into a breathtaking live-action spectacle, bringing the epic adventures of Hiccup and Toothless to life with jaw-dropping realism as they discover the true meaning of friendship, courage and destiny.

I adore the animated version and have probably watched it a half dozen times with my kids.
I will not watch this even once. Just from the trailer, it's shot for shot of the original.

This is peak creative bankruptcy. Did Disney consult on this?

Oh god, I remember her. I've seen four of her roles. I imagine they'd want to hide her, she can't act for shit. She's just a nepo baby.

I'm really not impressed by what they're showing of Hiccup (and they probably should've cast someone a couple years younger—maybe it's way too early to judge), but Toothless looks really impressive, and I was pretty dazzled by how accurately they reproduced his movement from the animated film.
Is this just gonna be a shot-for-shot remake of the animated film with worse visuals and acting?

Looks like a scene by scene remake of the animated film. They even have Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick.

It seems like creative bankruptcy to me, but I'm sure like the Disney live action remakes it'll do well at the box office.

It certainly looked like that from the trailer
Just showed it to my son who is a HTTYD MEGA-FAN of all the films and tv series, other than the modern version. He even made me take him to a summer movie airing of the first one since he wasn't born when it premiered and he wanted to see it in a proper theater.

"100%, 100%, we are going!"

Goddamn the cast is roooough though. We got Butler, he is always great. But Fishlegs is that really big New Zealand guy from Deadpool 2, they got a girl the size of THREE Ruffnuts, how are these folks gonna get on dragons? Nick Frost though, he's fun.

Literally zero reason to watch this when the original animated movie exists.

Guess Dreamworks couldn't resist following the soulless live action remake trend

I suspect that one scene meeting Toothless is the only one so similar to the animated version.

I actually wonder if this entire film was made to be a big marketing write-off for the new Universal Land. Grab a bunch of ESG loans and tax discounts while they were at it.

There is no way this will capture the same magic as the original, but if it's a shot for shot remake, it will probably still be enjoyable.

Thought this was a joke.

What. Is. The. Point? You are better off remaking the CG movies with new tech, which i actually would prefer since the jump from 1 to 2 is massive.

Shot for Shot so it can't be bad but man, not going cinema for it.

Well, Nico doesn't look much like Astrid or her book analogue, but she's pale enough that with the hair braided up she doesn't really stand out. If her chemistry with the Hiccup actor was the best, I think she may work in the film. Damn I see her mom STRONG in her though :p

But damn, they got some BIIIIIIIIIIG ass actors for the sidekicks, JFC how are these mammoths gonna ride dragons?

Anyway, I just wish they had dropped the viking aspect if they were gonna "globally cast". Come up with a more nebulous medieval theme or whatever. I don't personally care a whole lot but we all know there ain't gonna be any non-pacific islander looking folks in Moana 2 (or the live action version, could be wrong though) because they are the 'right' kind of non-diverse so I kinda feel like drawing my line in the sand just to be ornery.

I'm very much interested. Looking forward to it.

Director said it's not a shot by shot remake, but they did try to recapture some key moments from the original film. Astrid looks fine to me. No more blond hair, but she doesn't look wildly out of place with the setting from a visual design standpoint. She fits in just fine. Live action Little Mermaid this is not. If her performance and chemistry works out well with the rest of the cast, most particularly with Hiccup and Toothless whom are the heart of the film, then she will win over a fanbase for herself.

Hopefully the music and the deepened story all come together for a strong flick. Would love to see this with the family if the film is strong.

The funny thing is, the movies are nothing like the books. The books have the characters and they are vikings, but Toothless is a super small dragon with an attitude. I read the books to my son when he was little after we watched the shows and I thought to myself, "Why did they change this? It's pretty funny!" The story lines are also different because Toothless is small enough to sit on Hiccup's shoulder. I like both the books.and the movies for as different as they are. I would say give the live action a chance.
