I'm planning on upgrading my PC someday soon-ish, would getting an i7-6800k over an i7-6700k be stupid if I'm not planning on doing anything insanely CPU intensive? I'll be buying a new mobo, some DDR4 RAM and the CPU, so the i7-6800k package would end up being around 150-200e more expensive.

an i7-6700K will be just fine. some say an i7-6700K itself is overkill for gaming and that an i5-6600K will be OK. if you're purely gaming get a 6600K. if you are gaming + streaming/editing videos or other odd cpu heavy tasks then get a 6700K. i'd only get a 6800K or higher if it was being used for heavy workloads. when it comes to gaming there isn't much of a difference.

as you can see the 6700K beats the 6600K in the cpu heavy tasks and when it comes to the games the results are almost identical. very small differences. it's the same situation for the following benchmarks except the 6700K is slower in the CPU tasks.

Hi all, in the process of shopping around for an upgrade to my 670 GTX I've managed to nab a amazing deal on both an EVGA 980ti Superclocked ACX 2.0+ and a Gigabyte 1070 founders edition.

Both have arrived today but wondering which one to keep? The 1070 only cost £40 more and I know it's the newer card, but the 980ti is Superclocked and has a better cooler.

Thoughts?

IIRC the differences are overall slight but tend to favour the 1070. Add in the better longevity of support going forward, probably the better option.

I would spend a little bit more on a power supply. The CX are not the most reliable at times. I went from a CX750 to EVGA G2. Never happier. Corsairs RM series is better.

i have the MSI one and have no issue with it. i think all 1070's don't spin their fans until a certain temperature. with the MSI they don't spin until it hits 60C. most of the time for me the fans aren't even on all the time. they just spin up to keep the temperature in check then cut off but even when are they do run constantly they never seem to go over 50% speed. i'd say 35-45% is most likely where they'll sit. personally i don't think the fans are distracting/annoying until about 70% full speed. i did this manually to see how loud they can get. i have no idea what it'd take to get them running at that speed. i haven't set a custom fan curve so this is just the card controlling the temperature on it's own. of course what might not seem loud to me might be loud to you and it also depends on your case (i have a fractal define s).

Buy another stick of Ram and you should be good.

You can overclock everything in your setup if you need more performance. You have a K cpu so crank that up. The ram is like at 1.2v, crank it up to 1.35 and you can hit 3000.

The 980ti is evga so the customer service and warranty is better than gigabyte, and you can mess around with the bios which gives you more flexibility when tuning it, cheaper but still can get almost the same performance.

I can not vouch for gigabytes customer service but I know evga is very good in that regard. Gigabyte maybe good, but I'm not sure. Other than that I would keep the 1070.

As a rule, internal options are better. Shouldn't matter much for that though. BT is a mess, best bet for compatibility as far as I know is making sure it supports the latest standards. A lot of the dirt cheap ones dont, or didnt when I bought one years ago.

I'm looking at them and they literally range from $620 -$1200. While I'm well aware factory overclocks, added watercoolers, etc I can't possibly believe there is a justifiable difference between the $620 and the $1200 model.

What is the best one for the price? Should I pay a little extra for a factory OC or a better cooler or is the difference not that big and it just better to cheap out?

Depending on how good a deal you got, given 980 Ti's can still command a pretty premium, you might come out of this making more than you effectively paid for it.

I'm still slowly researching my new build and now I'm not sure if I want to go with AIO cpu watercooling (I've only ever used...well, my hyper 212). I have a HAF X and could fit damn near anything I want in there...but I would need to take out some massive fans and possibly drill holes in my case. I'm also not sure what impact a 240mm or bigger radiator would have on airflow in my case. I'm sure somebody has found a cooler that fits perfectly though so I'll keep looking around.

Has anyone had to deal with NZXT customer support? I submitted a ticket 12 days ago and they got back with me initially within 3 hours. I said yes to the shipping charges and asked for the quote, now nothing. 9 days ago I asked for an update, nothing. Today I tried online chat, no one chatted with me before I was disconnected. I called today on hold for 30 minutes, did the call back without loosing my place in line, it's now been 2.5 hours. WTF?

Had to deal with Phanteks support also at the same time, I got the replacement part for the case today, 12 days total time.

The replacement part for both is a replacement Plexiglas for the side panel.

Goals are 60 FPS locked at 4K with max settings. They are near identical in price for me but I am hesitant with SLI because of the issues I used to have like screen tearing and bad drivers when I use to run my 670s.

Hey guys I plan on grabbing a capture card sometime down the line, and I'm wondering if I get a capture card to stream console games will I benefit from an i7 or will that not matter since the capture card is doing most of the work.

Ha! Yes it would. That whole case looks upside-down to me. Radiator should be on the bottom (top?) blowing down (up?).

Hey guys, having a small issue could use assistance. Just did a fresh Windows 7 install on a new pc but for some reason, none of my usb drives are detected. I checked under devices from the Control panel and nothing. I can't access the internet since the drivers I need are on a usb drive. Any idea's?

Just put my PC together + installed Windows 10, and realized it doesn't actually have built-in Wi-Fi like I read somewhere (Asus Z170-A motherboard). I haven't used a Wi-Fi adapter since like.. 2009, so I'm clueless as to what it should look like these days. And are the USB ones viable? I have pretty good internet, so I wouldn't want things to get capped by the adapter.

Do all Wi-Fi adapters (PCI-E) have antennas? And those who don't are for ethernet only, right?

What do you mean you cannot access the Internet since the drivers you need are on a USB? Should not these settings already be baked in Windows 7. How are you trying to connect to the Internet wireless? wired? Also not trying to sound redundant but you don't have a DVD ROM or CD ROM hooked up to this PC right?

What I mean is there are no LAN drivers so I can't connect to the internet to download the drivers. Yes I'm wired and no there's no disk drive installed

Maybe you got confused by a description about the M.2 slot supporting a wireless card?

Internal would be better than USB, but I don't have any specific recommendations. I've never bought a wireless card.

Does your bios detect your USB drive if you have it plugged in? If so just make sure that set to primary as your first drive option , then create a self booting USB stick to DOS and transfer the files to your hard drive.

I've been saying I'm going to build myself a desktop PC for a few years now and I'm finally ready to do it. I already have 2 1080p monitors, keyboard, mouse, 1TB HDD and a 500W PSU laying around the house I plan on using.

I'm looking to build something for general usage and maybe some light gaming along with the ability to run VMs without spending a ton - ideally less than $500. I currently have an old macbook pro with upgraded ram that I can run a few VMs on but I'm looking to expand on the capabilities. The VMs are for a home pen testing and general IT skills lab. Virtualization is probably my top focus.

Here's what I'm considering now:
