If I want to support a developer, do I need to buy the game or is downloading it on GamePass enough?

DR3AM

Dreams of a world where inflated review scores save studios
I want to support MS and play THPS3+4. What's the best way for me to keep the studio alive?

Ask Phil.

MS is the world's 2nd largest company on Earth with a market valuation of $2.88 Trillion

That's $2,880,000,000,000

To understand a number this large, realize that $1 million ($1,000,000) is 0.000034% of $2.88 Trillion

To think you need to "support" a company with kind of value is fucking hilarious

Well, obviously develpers get money when putting a game on gamepass. I wonder if its a fixed sum, depends how many people download and play it, or a mix of both.

he is asking about the Devs, not MS.

Playing a lot on gamepass is probably the best option if you want to support *the game* and the studio along with buying the advanced access. MS don't need or care about your support.

Play on gamepass. Get it on sale to keep.
Sales actually help the devs as seen by Quantic Dream. Im personally doing this for Avowed and Indy.

Sign up to GP and install the game 1st. Then let it run all day while you're gone to rack up engagement metrics. Stay subbed for several years and only play that game. Then buy it on every system and tell your friends. Then start buying it and gifting codes to people.

Since it's a MS game I imagine Gamepass is good enough. Phil will see the most valuable resource on earth: engagement, and he'll be happy.

For non MS games I guess buying the game would be more helpful. I'd imagine MS just pays publishers a flat rate to be on gamepass so you downloading the game or not shouldn't make any financial difference for the dev/publisher.

buying

if Hi-Fi Rush had sold better vs. engagement on GamePass, Tango Gameworks might not have been shut down/sold off

Like most well adjusted adults, I play on gamepass and buy the game and then send Phil a personalized macaroni drawing with the words Thank You, painted in green.
Colt?

Your heard it from the dev themselves.

Moon Studios CEO says playing Ori and the Blind Forest on Xbox Game Pass doesn't help the studio

If anybody says anything other than buying, you can safely ignore their opinions.

To be fair that particular example is kinda stupid. The Moon Studios guy made a deal to have his games published by Xbox Game Studios. He has nobody to blame but himself because he took the stack of publishing cash instead of the stack of game pass cash.

Because they are third party and they got their gamepass lump sum upfront. Once they got that money then only an actual bought copy would give them money.

Playing the game on GamePass doesn't do shit for the developer, at least for the game in question. The way subscriptions typically work is that GamePass or whoever will pay the developer a flat fee to include the game on their service for 12 or 24 months. From there, it doesn't matter what the actual playtime looks like - the dev has gotten whatever money they're going to get. Sometimes, developers will get a flat fee + a bonus based on how much the game's actually played, but that's kind of rare and the bonus payout's something of a pittance for most. Now, if a game does really well, then the subscription providers are more likely to license their next game and potentially pay more for it, but that's also a years-long conversation.

So basically... buy the game. It's better for the developer, and better for gamers tired of subscriptions and other dumb business shit strangling the industry.

Buy the game. Specially if they're doing something worth supporting.

I could've pay less and subscribe to PS Extra to play Sea of Stars at the time, but in the end i decided to buy the game cause i love what they're doing. In fact, i loved Sea of Stars so much i went and bought their Ninja Gaiden inspired game called The Messenger.

Obviously, if money is tight then wait for a sale. Not saying to go broke supporting devs left and right. And, if you want to play the game on Gamepass then that's okay (you are paying for a service after all). But, the best way to support them is buying the game.

If the engagement is ridiculously high, maybe the devs could renegotiate new terms with Microsoft for more money.

Other than that, I don't see it really benefiting 3rd party publishers.
Isn't this Activision or am I misunderstanding?

At this point the developer already got paid from Microsoft in a likely lump sum deal. So if you want to increase the money in their pocket then buying it is just extra money for them.

If you want to maximize benefit and already pay for gamepass, then buying the game then playing GP pass version is probably optimal for the developer without you buying muiltiple copies of game. The direct sale is more money in pocket while the engagement on GamePass could help them score more deals in the future with Microsoft.

Game Pass, if the publisher thinks it's not enough it's their fault, not yours, they better not put it in the service in first place of they're losing money on it

In this case it's a first party published game, so there's no reservation one way or the other. 🤷‍♂️
