It's a not as bad a game as a lot of people were saying.
It was heavily bashed for some really bad cutscenes and lines taken apart from each other.
There are some good things to enjoy from this like the traversal and combat system.

The story is not as bad as it seems and Cuff delivers some good lines a la Grimoire Weiss.

A pretty okay game 6.5/10 and at times 7 in my books.

It was/is on PS+ extra, so I decided to give it a go, "to see what all the fuzz was about".

I barely got beyond the tutorial stage, because holy hell, that main character and her overtly talkative wristgear is just too much. If there was a "STFU" setting, I probably would have played for longer.

There is a stfu setting. But I didn’t feel the need to use it. They are not bantering so much. Not even half as much as in atomic heart (another game with talking hand)

The tutorial is slow. Get over it. The game combat and exploration is like nothing else.

And all the cringe you see is about the same as ff xv. It’s the same team. It’s normal isekai Japanese cringe. I found the characters endearing in the long run

Is bad, but not unbelievable bad. Worst thing is that the game start to be fun about 10hrs in, and start to be boring about 25hrs in. So you have about 15hrs of middle fun if you are brave enough to survive the infinite tutorial stage and unlock the fun superpowers.

Ah, good to see a registered member of FDF (Forspoken Defense Force) is up to the task.

The thing is, the vast majority of people agree the game sucks. Just let it go.

10 hours?! The cutscenes heavy tutorials are like 2 hours. A hen the game opens and you can do whatever.
Even so, I enjoyed the beginning of the game. It’s got this weird feeling. Like… charming, cringe, endearing and then you realise they are all dead because it’s an apocalypse. It’s one of most dire apocalypses in all games lol. Maybe too much

And they are very wrong. I will never let go.
There was a massive uprising in this game positivity on its Reddit wince the game got free. Tons of daily posts “wait… it’s actually great” of people actually playing and seeing past fake smear campaign.

I am not saying it’s some 10/10 game.
I was always saying it’s 7-8 game that some will love and other not. I really like the story and characters too. The lore is very deep and you can see they had way more in mind when making this game.
The whole criticism
Of this games is because the 10 seconds from that one cutscene and because you play as black girl. Let’s face it.
The game is not even woke. Not at all. It’s just Japanese trying to be more inclusive and having more women in the game lol but they do a weird, bad job about it. But it’s not classically woke at all

How can you think that. Did you play at least enough to finish the tutorial?
I played a bit after we get the ability to magic run... Very early in the game. Maybe 1 to 2 hours in... I got really put off for all the bad dialog... The gameplay seem average, I got a huge backlog, I didn't vibe with it, let's put in that way...

Fair enough. Don’t see why you should play if you don’t like it

The MC is one of the shittiest character ever (and I really really mean it...). Couldn't stand one hour. Asked for a refund even at 10/15euros (don't remember exactly what was the price when I tried...).

Though, if you skip everything related to narration/ cutscene, maybe you can keep your sanity...

I honestly don't care if something is "woke" or not. The definition seems to be nebulous at best. So having a black female lead, ehh, I honestly don't care. And yes, I think some people are way too reactionary about these kinds of things - just play the game and see how it works out.

But that constant inner monologue is just bad. Perhaps something was lost in translation. It doesn't make it any more tolerable. (and for the record, I think FFXV sucks as well)

Te. Play with HDR. It’s fantastic.
And don’t use rt mode. It sucks.
Quality at 120hz/40fps is the way to go

It’s probably just different tastes.
I ended up loving ff xv as well and it’s hard to pinpoint why. But I love cringe in those games. It’s kinda endearing ?

I was all in for this game, I even bought the DLC, then I played the game 3 hours and hated all about it. :(

Gameplay is horrible, the main character is unbearable... The graphic downgrade from what they promised and what was delivered is the biggest in gaming history... From "wow THAT'S true next gen" to "well it'd run no problem on base PS4".

People really underestimate how an awful main character can affect their games .. I stopped playing Horizon FW for the same reason... Coudnt stand Aloy no matter how "pretty" or "good gameplay" it had, thats 40 hours hearing this bitch atitude girl boss talk.

Its like some think that gaming is this
magical media were you can always ignore huge parts of the constitution of the game and truly enjoy the rest... welp.. I just cant...

Forspoken is extremely mid. The gameplay is excellent and the parkouring and combat is a lot of fun. Lots of cool magic abilities to use. The world building is pretty good too, with an interesting visual concept that makes the world enjoyable both to look at and to run around and explore.

That's the good part. The bad parts is the story and characters, and the fact that the game evolves to a shallow Ubi-type formula where you just routinely check off different map markers in order to upgrade Frey. It's the very definition of filler content.

Frey is also insufferable and badly written. I get what the writers intended with her arc, an anti hero that feels abandoned by the people that should've cared for her, and who ultimately rise up to the task to save the world and everywhere around her. But the writers don't have the talent to pull it off and it all comes off as super cringe and forced. Ella Balinska does a commendable job with the hand she's dealt, but Frey is just an obnoxious asshole that is very hard to sympathize with. And the writers is at fault. The dialogue is so poorly written that you feel second hand embarrassment just listening to it.

Forspoken is a dull and bland game that occasionally shines through, mostly because the gameplay loop is very fun. But ultimately it gets repetitive and downright boring, and you just run around fighting the same monsters, complete the same tedious map markers for the hundreth time, and because the story and characters are not engaging enough to push forward, the game just falls apart right in front of your eyes.

I got given a book that was a video game spinoff thing. My friend said "when are you going to read that? Presumably after you've read all the good books?"

I assume OP has played a LOT of games.

It's one of the very few PS exclusives that I haven't got the pleasure to play yet but I'm curious about it. I'm a sucker for stuff like Atlas Fallen, Flintlock, Eternal Strands (super good game) and I can't picture it to be so much worse than those.

I think incompetence should be less used as a excuse for this characters( as much as I agree they have no competence whatsoever).. but I think they are made like this on purpose because its an exact reflection of how this gen z writters see the world and people .... I think they were extremely competent in creating what they think is a normal strong woman. The exact same patterns in different IPS and MEDIAS are easily recognizable for years now.

Once you get a hang for the combat, I recommend making a beeline for the first major boss as soon as you can (should be marked on your map once it’s an option to go fight them). IIRC, each major boss defeated unlocks a new elemental group of spells, and it’s quickly switching through elemental spells as you attack with the addition of parkour where the game truly shines.

Forspoken eventually made me feel like a badass battlemage on a level I wasn’t expecting. For that, it was worth the investment IMHO.

Forspoken is one of those PS launch titles like Kessen or Genji that should have been easily forgotten for better 1st party games that would come later and wash the bad taste of it out of your mouth. But not this generation.

Forspoken has some redeeming qualities. For instance, you can customize about everything. I think your health, enemy health, auto pickups, mute banter etc etc. The game also has 40fps and runs far, far better than FFXVI in quality mode. But also in perf mode. While it does maintain a grander scale and verticality. After some updates I think the IQ and HDR was great.

The game is by no means great, but I did beat it and enjoyed doing so. Once you get the hang of the parkour and for me it was by setting a certain button to press once to initate parkour and maintaining unless you cancel with a stick press. This way you can let go of the buttons, auto climb, evade and run with LS, while aiming spells and turning the camera etc. I felt like a boss zapping around and nuking enemies. It looks very good in motion.

The game has some interesting lore, world building and some good music. Its just very repetitive and it doesn't go beyond parkour, finding some secrets and blasting enemies.

Here is some of the stuff you can (eventually) do. And see those weaknesses, FFXVI team?

It’s a kind of fun 7.5/10 game IMO. It’s mostly perfectly enjoyable. Not the sort of mediocrity we want square to be spending big budgets on thoug.
