Sony's Shuhei Yoshida: "I'm Sorry I Was Wrong" About PlayStation VR2

That's why I bought it on Steam.

Valve got my money, even though it would prefer a PS5 version with HDR and haptic feedback.
They did not give and effort or pitch better to get Halflife alyx. That game could have been big with that great tech of psvr2 and ps5 install base. That game is the pinnacle of vr gaming for me. Losing it was the downfall of psvr2. But dont get me wrong, there is still hope for psvr2 especially it is a good solid tech. It just needs more game support and additional price drop. Ironic is maybe a MS xbox game like for example MS flight simulator might save it. Oh boy, MS simulator will look amazing on psvr2 on ps5.

Sony has already lost around a billion of dollars on pointless GaaS projects (I'm not against GaaS/MP, I believe they should spend less by remastering MP classics).

Total mismanagement of funds... and yeah, if MS/Phil saves PSVR2, it would be very ironic.

PSVR2 is the best headset out there, even better than Quest 3. I don't think I would exchange OLED for anything else.

Doubtful. Astrobot and Alyx are considered the best VR games and Astrobot didn't move the needle.
Well I love Astrobot especially for the kids, but Alyx is on a different level. That is epic proportion and pinnacle of VR gaming and HL has so many followers including me. This was the deal breaker, not having HL Alyx on ps5 for psvr2. Im 100% sure if HL alyx was on ps5 for psvr2 it could have sold millions.

True, they wasted very good talented teams like Bend and Blue point and even Santa Monica Studios to create GAAS and live service. They could have made at least remakes of classic PS franchise like Resistance, killzone, warhawk, or socom. Good thing Sony new heads abandon the Gaas focus innitiative and focusing back on there strengths which is Sp exclusives. But still they wasted so many years for that and we might probably see there Sp exclusives projects maybe later part of ps5 life cycle or probably ps6 launch games. And wasted purchases like Firewalk and bungie, which they could have purchase better companies like From software, or konami, or square. About MS xbox games to ps5. I hope this games will be Psvr2 compatible: Forza horizon, Doom, and MS flight simulator.

I don't understand what he's sorry about, it's not like he is in charge of green lighting games from Sony Studios.

I really like PSVR2. I've definitely played that thing more than I have flat games exclusive to this gen.

PSVR2 is for people who don't mind playing games of questionable quality. It has a lot of highly polished games but it also has some games that are downright goofy. Stride: Fates for example, it's an indie Mirror's Edge, I'm assuming from an Eastern European studio. The game is so damn goofy but it's fun as hell and it's quite the workout at times. It sounds cliche but with VR, you are inside the game and dealing with all that comes with it. Lots of non-VR players don't grasp that aspect and many people who play VR don't grasp it either, they get upset and assume things are broken because the game isn't responsive like a flat title would be. I enjoy having to wrap my brain around the mechanics. Sometimes it feels awful and busted but once you wrap your head around it, you can bend most games to your will and it's honestly f***ing awesome, there's nothing else like it.

Could see it a mile away.

Cost too high and virtually zero first party support. You got Horizon, GT7 VR mode, anything else? Maybe I missed a Sony game.

They assumed PS gamers amped up on trying VR (and missed PSVR1 the first go around) seeing all the Quests out there would scoop them up for console playing the same games over again.

He is not sorry for the peripheral (after all, they were very happy with the technical achievement level reached): he is sorry that VR didn't become a mass success.

It allows already some of the most impressive and involving gaming experiences ever, but it will not become a mass thing until the problem of motion sickness will be solved for everybody (with some tech to suppress it completely for everybody). Many of my friends were immediately enthusiastic experiencing its immersion and free 3d interaction, but all of them experienced motion sickness and backed away. I experienced it badly, too, but my desire for the experience and its possibilities was too strong to yeld, and I persevered, and now I can somehow enkoy it with just some attention to some movements (still in progress). And games development itself is greatly handicapped by motion sickness. The degree of movement freedom could be incredible, if not hampered by anti-motion sickness boundaries.
Once that is solved, no more restriction, both for the majority of people and development itself. That, paired with small and light form factor without any bulkiness (like the Megane VR) will be the bigger, gigantic, step.

Alyx did not move the needle even on PC (PCVR userbase on Steam is like 3 million players, tops). What's telling is that now they're going back to flatscreen for their next half-life title.

It sounds depressing but I think nothing outside of EVERY SINGLE FLATSCREEN GAME being VR-enabled could make VR more widespread. It's already been poisoned with the "I don't want to put a brick on my face to flail my arms around and feel sick" drivel from those who haven't even tried it.

What happened Sony brought some hardware out at a expensive price and then didn’t support it with games leaving 3rd party’s to it, loved the original psvr but there was nothing on the psvr2 that made me want to purchase it when I’ve got a quest 2 and then moved onto a quest 3

I think some here would say this is just a matter of time. HL Alyx on PS5 for PSVR2.

Half Life 2 VR is amazing as well and doesn't get enough credit as a VR game.

It basically got the vita treatment.

…if the vita required a ps3 to work

PSVR2 has a very loyal fanbase like Vita too.

I remember the vita community desperately listing down each and every Vita games in an attempt to counter the “Vita has no games” narrative, when people were talking about it in the sense it has no attractive game that make them want to buy a Vita, not in a literal sense.

Ah i remember those days. The prototype name NG (next gen) portable got mocked as the No Games Portable

It was mostly an indie machine (like PSVR2), very few notable AAA games (Killzone, Uncharted).

Has there been any chat as to why Sony/Valve can't strike a deal to bring HL Alyx to PSVR2, the returns offset against the cost to port must simply not be worth it for Valve but you'd think Sony would step in and sweeten the deal and make it worthwhile or maybe the PS5 is simply not powerful enough to do it justice and Valve doesn't want a 2nd rate port of its golden child

Sony just doesn't care, PSVR2 is a niche platform.

Personally, I believe HL Alyx would be better on PS5/PSVR2 due to HDR and haptic feedback... it's not always a matter of resolution.

Well we now have Ps5 pro. Maybe there is a chance for Sony to go for it, especially with a new head of Sony PS, to get a deal with valve to have a ps5 version. There are still more years left for Ps5 before Ps6.

PS should had gotten a remaster deal. HL2 is OG.

I hope so. We now have ps5 pro, and we still have 4 more years for Ps5.

Maybe it will be a different story with console due to a different market and big install base. PSVR1 was successful and Sony could have gotten that market for psvr2, if only Halflife alyx was available.

Lol What makes you think Sony doesn't care for a PSVR 2 port of Halflife Alyx?

Did you miss how much Sony did free advertising of Alyx for the PSVR 2 PC adaptor?

Pretty obvious they know it's a highly regarded VR game. However at the end of the day it's Valves decision and for now it stays a Steam exclusive, Sony can't force them to green light a port.

2 years have passed since PSVR2's release... what makes you think it's coming now?

You remind me of HL fanboys saying "HL3 is coming anytime now".

Valve hasn't released games on PS since the PS3 era (Orange Box, Portal 2). That was a long time ago and back then PC gaming wasn't as strong as it is now.

Not a single Valve game released on PS4/5, despite being more similar to PCs due to x86 ISA. Does that ring any bells?

Regarding the PSVR2 PC adapter, it's Sony's subtle way of saying "hey, I no longer care about PSVR2, you better buy a PC if you want more VR games". Shuhei Yoshida basically has confirmed this.

And that's what I did. I'm not going to wait forever. Life is short.

Not sure how you interpreted my post they way you did.

I'm saying the decision is Valves. If Valve wants to keep Alyx exclusive to Steam then Alyx stays exclusive to Steam.

Nothing Sony can do about it.

The Ad compaign and free advertsing shows Sony knows how highly regarded the game is on PC. They'd obviously love a port but it's up to Valve to want a port in the first place.

I'm trying to tell you that Valve doesn't care either. No games released on PS4/5.

They're not going to release a PS5 port for an accessory that stopped being produced in mid-2022 (I bought PSVR2 in Dec 2024 at a huge discount and it was produced in Aug 2022). Sony is clearing up inventories.

PSVR2 will soon be a relic item, just like PS Vita. Sony doesn't even produce standalone controllers as replacements. What more do you need to know?

Valve will be happy if more people switch to PC/SteamVR thanks to Sony's PC adapter. This is nothing like the PS3 era, when PC gaming was plagued by piracy.

Yeah I thought we agreed it's just you're being an absolute massive fanboy about explaining it.

Do you have a VR headset yourself?

Sony's betrayal of those of us who bought PSVR2 was the main reason I sold the PS5 and switched to PC. I was really pissed off.
Which VR device on the PC has massive first party investment software wise? And doesn't rely on all the same games that are ported to the PSVR2?

Not bashing on the PC, it's the best platform for a myriad of reasons, but PSVR being the reason when you are literally in the same VR boat on the PC.

Welcome to my ignore list. :)

Okay my man, my bad for missing you owned a PSVR2. You just seem really really down about it and you can't deny your posts came across very fanboy like.

More than happy to be on your ignore list, from your general tone nothing of value was lost.
