I'm itching for indie games. Any recommendations?

Games I liked that I have played recently:

Zero Sievert
Graveyard Keeper
Quasimorph
Balatro

I guess there's an emphasis on survival and some form of combat but I would take any stuff you think is worth playing.

Mech Engineer. If you like 90s X-Com and obscure sprite based interfaces with lots of system that you don’t know what they exactly do and a huge ass in-game instructions manual, this is your game. It has some combat too.

Edit: made by one guy.

Selaco (FPS)
Severed Steel (FPS)
Rimworld (Colony Sim)
Factorio (Factory design and management)
UFO 50 (50 NES-like games, pretty good)
Furi (character action, boss rush)

Project Zomboid, maybe Darkwood too.
Will try these out.

I had my fun with Rimworld and Project Zomboid. Let's just say I burnt out. Project Zomboid is definitely fun but my friends that I play with migrated to Phasmaphobia and I don't want to play it alone.

You have surely tried Terraria and Stardew Valley? If not, big fat recommendations.

Played this for 5 hours, the humour is right my alley. Very clever and dumb. The premise would have been perfect for a Cartoon show and the game looks the part.

It gets pretty repetitive later on and contains trace amounts of woke, consult your doctor if that's a problem. But the music and presentation is so good I'm willing to forgive a lot. A masterwork edition releases Oct 22'th as an upgrade on PC along with console versions.

Remake of an old NES game. It looks arcadey and fast, but it's actually slow and almost plodding like Prince of Persia. Everything you do is very deliberate and you progress by experimentation and memorization.

Not sure if all of them are Indies:
Ori 1 + 2
Outer Wilds
My Times at Portia
Hades
Terraria
Stardew Valley
12 minutes
Cuphead
Subnautica
Vampire Survivors
Hand of Fate
Route 96
What remains of Edith Finch

If you’re into Metroidvanias and Soulslikes, then Death’s Gambit: Afterlife is really good.

It came out a few years ago simply titled “Death’s Gambit” but then after a bunch of user feedback it got a major overhaul known as “Afterlife” and now it’s super polished and very high quality.

Played a quarter of these and they’re all good.

I have to say I’m a survival horror fan and love mechs so any game with those will automatically pick up my attention.
I prefer atmospheric survival horrors or action adventures myself. Anything similar to Dragon's Dogma, OG Tomb Raider and atmospheric shooters that Selaco nails really good are what I tend to enjoy the most. But pacing and execution is key for these kinds of games.

One more for you.

Shadowgate, no need to look for anything else because there is no “Bug Trouble in Little China” game. Message me later to thank me. Good day.

It's not an indie game but I will recommend it anyway.

Shiren the Wanderer 5+

Very unique rogue-like, and the best of them in my opinion. Available on many platforms.

Fantastic metroidvania with great combat
Cyberpunk FPS roguelike, plays like Doom eternal
Still in EA, but very similar to Warcraft strategy
Similar to Mimimi stuff
Fast movement based, very fun

Just came out a couple hours ago. I played through the tutorial area and up to the first camp of people and am really liking what I'm seeing. Looting, crafting, simple but satisfying combat. And I love the art style. Others are saying it's like Gothic and gives 20 to 40 hours of gameplay with good replay value. I never played those games but I'm now interested in checking them out.

I mainly play indie games. These are some recommendations, mostly titles I've spend a lot of time on in recent years, some over-shadowed gems and a few classics thrown in:

  • A hardcore, class based, immersive PvPvE dungeon crawler, imagine Escape from Tarkov in a Dungeons and Dragons setting
  • High risk, high reward feel
  • Steep learning curve, but there's plenty of beginner/build/boss guides available on YT
  • Methodical combat
  • Free to play version available: 1 class, no access to auction house

  • Amazing, surprisingly deep rogue-lite, that feels like a compressed epic dungeon crawl
  • Allows for huge build variety
  • Action/combat has an arcadey/retro feel with bullet hell bosses

  • Similar to Tiny Rogues but with a color bullet mechanic similar to Ikaruga
  • Intentional offbeat, scuffed feel (acquired taste)

  • Fast-paced deck-builder rogue-lite with a kick-ass soundtrack
  • Endgame allows for crazy (broken) builds

  • Awesome and unique rogue-lite with super charming retro graphics

  • Quality tower-defense with RTS micro-management
  • 1.0 has just been released

  • Tower defense meets action RPG
  • Big emphasis on actively using booby traps, explosives and clockwork minions (abilities with cooldowns) and mowing down mobs with big hammers, swords and guns

  • An 'action roguelike' or 'survivors' game, basically Diablo Survivors

  • Top-notch, kick-ass 'survivors' game with an excellent 90's feel d'nb/rave soundtrack

  • Another high quality survivors game

Follow-up post due to media limit:

  • Despite the 'casual' looks, it's a very good tower defense game that doesn't re-invent the wheel, but feels very refined
  • Very cool upgrades and synergies

  • Boomer shooter done right

  • What I consider the best indie boomer shooter, excellent level design

  • Amazing retro ninja action platformer

  • King's Field-like rogue-lite
  • Intentional offbeat, distorted vibe (acquired taste)

  • Competitive auto-battler
  • The casual friendly looks are quite deceiving, as the meta is (frustratingly) hardcore

  • Cute, little rhythm game

  • Early days of internet 'moderator' game, very nostalgic vibes

  • One of the best indie metroidvania games with an amazingly unique and dark setting and soundtrack

  • One of a kind 80's communist state border-control game

Deep Rock Galactic.

It's multiplayer, but has the nicest community I've ever seen, almost no toxicity. It's Minecraft meets Starship Troopers (or Helldivers if you want a more recent example).

I’ve seen and heard of it. First time I heard about the community though. A good community definitely helps them make me interested in it.

ROCK AND STONE

What I love about DRG is you can play together or completely Solo and I always prefer Bosco. Very nice FPS experience and gives me that Metroid Prime craving I need.

I am looking forward to Rogue Core.

Great game (overwhelmingly positive on steam with almost 250k reviews), great soundtrack and even greater value (battlepasses, events etc are completely free, there are only some cosmetic packs you can purchase if you want to support the developer). The community is nice and very much alive, even after more than 4 years. But obviously you’re going to have the best time playing it with friends.

Uncommon choices but these are games made recently that will run on old hardware so that's interesting if you're into that kind of thing.

I will always shill for The 8-Bit Guy. I also happen to be working on the official sequel to Attack of the PETSCII Robots. :messenger_smirking:

I have Record of Lodoss purchased but haven't played it yet. Though, from what I understand, it's not a Metroidvania since the game is stage-based? That just makes it a CV clone.

In terms of Metroid clones, I just finished Aeterna Noctis. Fun game and HUGE (maybe bigger than Hollow Knight) and it has some of nastiest platforming in the genre. Enjoyed it overall though it's a bit buggy.

Currently playing another Metroid clone in Souldiers and that one's pretty darn good. As you may have figured out, I love indie Metroid clones. Can recommend more if needed.

Overall I HAVE to recommend Crosscode. It's a few years old and it's a top-down Zelda clone and it's fantastic. Great mix of exploring, fighting and the dungeons are loaded with puzzles. It's loaded with content as well. Can't recommend it enough.

FYI, these are all steam links but all these are also available on Playstation. Always prefer a console version vs struggling with a PC copy.
