It costs $255 to unlock everything in MultiVersus that can’t be earned by playing

Some people replied to my message and I'd like to clarify.

I hate "free to play", it's a mobile game disease. I said I wished they would stop the "slowly bleed them dry model" and just charge for the game. I didn't say or suggest I wanted a "free" game and that's that.

By saying how it effects everyone else, I also didn't mean in terms of that game or in terms of a player using a different skin or character, I mean't it more in the sense that companies see the money being raked in and then the next time it gets worse.

Companies removed rewards for gameplay like "beat the game in under 3 hours to unlock this" or "beat the boss on hardest difficulty to unlock this skin" etc , they even put betas locked behind pre orders (not all but a lot) . You know betas? Were the companies want and sometimes NEED the public to stress test their servers, test performance etc but they even put that behind a pay wall.

Loot boxes, season passes, online passes, random stuff like "time saver packs" to skip playing the game you bought, adding in MTX or even adverts a month after release to avoid the review window they promised not too, glorified cheats etc are just bad imo.

I appreciate some people like the f2p model and maybe it's a generational thing (in a non patronising way) I am just completely against this.

You need to stop clumping in all your gaming pet peeves into unrelated games. No idea why you’re going in on a rant about lootboxes , season passes etc with respect to this game. They don’t exist.
For most people in this thread - and in fact, most gamers - Multiversus isn’t going to bleed them dry. I for one will play likely without spending a dime.

Hopefully, now you’re aware it’s an F2P game and the model is repugnant to you, I trust you’ll stay out of future threads for this game?

Because the open beta is not widely available to the public yet. The only way to get access is if you had access to one of the previous tests, or you got a key from a Twitch drop. You can just leave a stream up with someone streaming Multiversus and you get a key in an hour. It will be open to all at the end of the month.

I'd just suggest you ignore them as best as you can then, for your own sanity. Because the model isn't going anywhere. Games that you're referring to with unlockables DO still exist, but they all depend on the scope of the project, type of game, well, and just the overall goal. I think it's pretty common for a smaller (or newer) studio (like to Player First Games) to want to focus on F2P because it allows them to stretch out development over a specific amount of time. It allows them to gauge budgets, content, and scope better. So, in the long run, just more safety. Honestly, as an 84 kid, I think it's awesome when it's handled well. I think it's great that kids and teens these days can enjoy games for free, whereas when we were kids all we could do was buy, rent, or play demos. The kicker with F2P is that parents need to tell their kids not to buy and make sure their cards aren't attached. If they are, that's on them if purchases are made, lol.

OK, obviously you are were born underwater and forgotten about for about 8 minutes. I never said, if you read what I wrote, that there are loot boxes in this game. I was talking about the "free to play" model as a whole, which should've been obvious. And who are you to tell me to stay out of topics? I was on topic, unlike you. Do not talk to me as if you are above me, especially when your argument is against something I didn't even say or imply. Incredible. Also, if you think only F2P games have this junk in it, then I don't know what to tell ya except I hope your career bought the correct non-toxic crayons for you to suckle on.

Altho they'd probably pull some bullshit where it'd be like 200$ or something.

'' F2P '' often ends up being more expensive than P2P in the end...
And it feels like a disingenuous label most of the time, it's not a charity they're obviously designing them from the ground up to make you pay and pay more than you otherwise would for a standard game.
 
It's all cosmentic shit...idc. I'll put 20$ aside to pay for the skins i like and ignore the rest. IDK why people add up the price of EVERYTHING and complain for f2p games...who buyS EVERYTHING?

I'm not a huge F2P fan but this seemed silly to use against it.

Has anyone ever asked to know the total value of all clothes in a store so they can know what it would cost to just Have Everything (tm)? Nobody expects you to buy out Macy's, you buy two outfits and leave lol.

This is exactly my take, probably the ones that always complain about having to pay to unlock cosmetics are those with strong OCD for collecting everything and I can understand it, but some games are not designed with them in mind, they just expect people to get some items they like from all availables in the store, that's why they do so varied content over the time. It's a f2p game, after all, if that's a big of an issue they should avoid those games or just fix their own issues with their OCD or whatever because we're already like 15 years into it and it came to stay, for better or for worse

all those skins in a paid game would have been unlockable through gameplay.....
 
I mean, licenses cost a lot of money, they had to recoup them somewhere, and since the game is free...
The voice talent might cost money, but the game is published by Warner Brothers, who also owns all the IP.

But yeah, games aren't free if they can't make up their money in other ways. My thought is always people should save their anger for retail titles that include this sort of thing.

Not exactly ‘very popular’, is it?

And no surprise it has no MTX since it’s paid. An F2P game often allows you A much bigger playerbase, and MTX becomes a necessity then since the bulk of players aren’t paying anything.

I tried this game out and I just find it so floaty, hopefully it does well for those that enjoy these smash like fighting games, as it looks fairly high quality.

I think I've just grown out off these games as I couldn't get into smash Wii u and ultimate either, loved melee as a kid though, but I just much prefer traditional fighting games.

And you also aren't supposed to own everything, like if you're willing to get a nice skin for your main character you either cough up the $7 every once in a while or just get the free currency ones.

People seem to want to be outraged by everything these days.

If this game was a paid game, i dont think i would ever buy it. But becuase its free, im eagerly waiting for it. Honestly, I'm happy with this model. I get to try out a game at no cost and see if I will stick with it in the long run and maybe put some money in it to enhance the experience. I'd be angrier playing a paid game just to find out it was shit or was not to my liking.

You can either grind gold in the game to unlock all of the 15 characters at launch or buy the founder's pack for $40. Or you can pay $100 to get all the characters for the next year. Well, Smash Bros isn't F2P, so that's one big thing. But characters are unlocked through gameplay, as well as other content. But that doesn't include the future DLC with new characters, etc. Those are required purchases.

MultiVersus basically does the same thing, however it's F2P. Because it's F2P, there has to be monetization somewhere so that the game can make money. So at the moment, there are cosmetics that are behind a paywall. But that's all they are, cosmetics and icons, etc. Maybe they'll add a way to earn THAT currency without paying anything, even if it's a small drip. But who knows. The game needs to earn money to sustain itself as a F2P title.

No, sweetheart... I'm not being an "useful idiot", I'm looking out for my own interests in this. I don't care about optional cosmetics in games... Like, I can buy a Street Fighter game for $60 and there could be a million different outfits for Ryu and Chun-Li to unlock, but why would I play with anything but their iconic standard outfits? With this model I just skip paying the initial $60 that can go towards something else. If people want to break the bank buying a shiny outfit based on a TikTok trend or whatever all the more power to them for keeping the game profitable for everyone to enjoy, I'm just glad I can play this for free and not worry about anyone having any advantages over me due to spending more money.

This is the right approach to the F2P model, they're offering an equal playing field for everyone while also offering paid additions by people who may find value in them.

Exactly $157,97... And all players pay at least $60 for the main game, so they don't have anything to recoup and make up for F2P players like with this.

Also, they have a massive amount of characters and stages (which both affect gameplay, unlike cosmetics) locked behind a very steep paywall, so yeah... I'd rather get the F2P model than whatever "Premium" fighting games are doing these days.

Not to mention, I can go to any friend no matter their current financial situation, and say "hey, download this free smash clone and play with me." That's a pretty great selling point.

As someone who has played Genshin and Apex for likely close to 1000 hours combined without spending a penny on either, I pretty much only benefit from games like this.

Oh yea, and with a game like this I have no problem tossing them $10 every few months for the battle pass. Hell the pre-season battlepass (which is just $3) has some good stuff including a Shaggy skin, a Wonder Woman emote, and the best ring out animation yet in the game. Honestly doubt I'll ever change my ring out now that I have that.

Street Fighter 3, Tekken 5, Mortal Kombat 2 were arcade ports. In 2022 they'd just be rom dumps. I can't believe you're seriously trying to compare a F2P game in 2022 to games that are nearly 20+ years old.

Look at Street Fighter V, Guity Gear Strive, Tekken 7, Soul Calibur VI, KOF XIV/XV, etc for how modern fighting games compare to what this is doing.

Most of those games are from a time where additional content wasn't even possible.

And Street Fighter 3rd Strike is literally DLC+Patches, but tied to an entire new purchase of the game... Not only that, but it was the second time they pulled this with that one game alone. So yeah, if you were a fan of the game and bought the 3 versions at launch to have all content as it was released that amounts to ~$150. Which is quite a bit more than the $255 this thread is about when you take inflation into account.

Those games are all from a different era. Times have changed, especially with game development costs, methods of player retention, etc. It's reallllllly hard to compare games from 15-20+ years ago to modern titles. I personally would've loved if DLC was ALWAYS as substantial as the Expansion packs and similar stuff that we'd see back in the day. But that's just not how it is now. Maintaining players is so important, so roadmaps have to be done correctly to keep players interested because so many people play regularly and things can get stale very quickly if it's not managed correctly.

If I'm paying for a full priced fighting game, I'd LOVE for it to come with everything. Hell it better! Even more so, I'd love if future characters and stages were added for free. I wouldn't mind paying for DLC if it's substantial, or if the cost is low. But it usually isn't, especially for a game you've already paid $60+ for IMO.

Compared to that, I'd personally rather have F2P game that I can play for free, and unlock characters and important content for free. Majority of the time, if the game is good, feels good, has good direction, and is monetized correctly I have no problem tossing them money. I just keep track of how much I spend, because I personally think it's important to keep that spending within a certain threshold.

Another day, another F2P game, another pearl clutching thread about MTX.
Yuuuuup. What's worse is that this isn't even monetized poorly, but I guess complaining about F2P monetization is a standard thing even more so these days.

The current model for fighting games is an improvement over the old days. I do not miss communities being fragmented by annual releases that add a character or two.
