James T. Kirk is in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

Pike captained the Enterprise for 15 years. The 23rd century seasons of Disco were set about five years before Kirk took command of the Enterprise. If Pike’s show is set after that, it would be inevitable that Kirk would eventually show up.

Wait... Already?
They’re filming Season 2 already. The goal is eventually to have non stop Star Trek all year. Disco and Picard are overlapping right now.

And Disco S4 shocked me. The last half of the season was basically about them trying to figure out how to communicate with an alien race outside the galaxy who communicate using hydrocarbons. It’s way too sci-fi for what that show was the first three seasons.

When I saw the thread title I thought "Shatner??"

Since this is an era specific show I guess it makes sense they would use another actor.

Why? Damn near every other show is deaging ancient actors. Guess it depends if he has a big role or not.

Shatner just went into space, ill allow him another crack at kirk :p

Season 4 is shockingly the most Star Trek of anything since Enterprise ended. The whole season is a first contact story with an alien race more alien than has ever been seen in Star Trek. Due to that it needed the whole season to show how they figured out how to find them and decipher an alien language based in hydrocarbons.

It is, imo. She hasn't cried at all this season, as far as i know. It's been really good. And the first contact has been WOW!

But they all fall under the Paramount label, so surely they could find a way to make it work?

How? They're completely different universes and they're making a 4th Kelvin movie. They've even made it clear in the shows how that's a different alternate universe.

Here he is, apparently. Cautiously optimistic.

Anson Mount as Pike without a beard is creeping me out though. And Akiva Goldsman attached to this project has me VERY worried.

I like that they changed the uniforms.

In DISCO Season 2, they just made TOS colored versions of the S1 DISCO uniforms:

The Strange New Worlds tunics also look better than the JJ Abrams Kelvin timeline ones:

It will be nice to see TOS again. I don't need them to be 100% faithful to low budget 60's design like silver painted cardboard sets but it would be nice to see them avoid excessive digital displays and the like.

And I hope we get little nods to things like how the enterprise bridge is slightly twisted to off set the turbolift door.

So I just watched the first 2 eps of Discovery S1.

HOLY FUUUCK was that bad. Like impossibly bad. The pace is blistering, dialogue rammed on top of each other, the camera swoops everywhere yet the action is never that clear, and the plot..... Hoo boy, WTF? I sorta see where some klingon dude is using some religious/nationalistic symbol to lure the tribes into a fight with the federation to awaken their pride but it just makes no sense and all the actors gargling on klingon with that metronomic cadence make those scenes hard to follow. I won't even get into the depiction of technology compared to TOS.

Anyway, does the show change tone or anything to make watching more worthwhile? This same creative team is doing Strange New Worlds right?

No the people responsible for S1 of DISCO are long gone.

Each season is different:
S1 is the worst Star Trek ever, worse than Nemesis
S2 is Search for Smiley Spock with Pike
S3 is off the rails woke in the 31st century
S4 is the most sci-fi Star Trek has been in decades and no one can figure out how that happened.

Season 4 is the BEST! you almost don't need to watch season 3 to understand it, although there are some good episodes in season 3 ... Like REALLY good. But they're the exceptions, not the rule

It looks like Kurtzman and Akiva Goldman are exec producers of both shows. So hopefully the Lead show runner can shed their influences.

So I can just skip straight to S4 of STD and be ok?

All you need to know about S4 is that they‘re in the 31st century now and the ship’s computer is a sentient AI as a result of them leaving the 23rd century with data from an AI that wanted to wipe out all life. The 31st century just came off of 150 years of isolation after all dilithium went inert and they’re rebuilding the Federation. Spock’s unification efforts eventually were a success and at one point the Vulcans and Romulans reuinted and Vulcan is now called N’Var.

Rember in the good old days of broadcast TV we would get 20-22 eps a season, usually split across xmas. So a single season would last september to may with a few breaks for major holidays/events.

Now we need 4-5 distinct shows to have the same coverage :p

No wonder TV is so expensive these days. No more "80% flashbacks to previous material" episodes, recycled SFX shots, 3 cocaine fueled writers hammering out 22 scripts in 2 months, and the infamous "ship in a bottle" eps with 3 cast and a single set.

Discovery LOOKED great, very theatrical, but the direction was garbage and the script atrocious. All that $$$ down the tube, coulda had 3 ST:TNG quality series for that price I bet. You really just need one good bridge set, a couple other locations, one good ship model, some face prosthetics, and, oh yeah, a good cast and script....

Season 4 of Discovery has been great Trek, believe it or not. You only need cursory knowledge of season 3 to be caught up. It's so much like TNG ... But serialized obviously.

And they totally nailed the landing with the finale too. It's 100% Roddenberry Trek. The cameo of the Earth president at the end will trigger some here, but the whole episode up to that was a great finale to the season.

It's still run by the two worst human beings ever to be involved in science-fiction, Alex Kurtzman-the-absolute-charlatan and Akiva Goldsman, who wrote Batman & Robin if that gives you any idea of his abilities. So it will be just like Picard Season 2: no matter how many boxes they check for the fans (Q is back! etc etc), nothing these two men touch in their entire careers and lives will ever be anything but trash.

Want to save Star Trek? The only way is to fire these two and everyone they brought on board to the writers tables these past few years.

Answer me this: what idiot thought that the writer for the Transformers film and the writer for Batman & Robin should be put in charge of multiple Star Trek series and reshape the entire franchise?

Star Trek theme park will include the Picard roller coaster which goes around and around until euphoria / euthanasia is achieved.

Ice cream shaped like your favourite characters. Borg bumper cars, fun is futile.

Following tradition by the sound of things. All ST shows (minus TOS and TAS) sucked for the first three seasons or so.

4 started off slow and 3 leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but by the end it's the closest to an actual Gene Roddenberry Star Trek episode since he died in 1991.

The entire season is a first contact story of how they have to 1. locate an alien race that exists outside our galaxy and 2. figure out how to communicate with them because their language is based on hydrocarbons.

It started with Measure of a Man... Season 3 had maybe half of it's season as good episodes. Season 4 is where it hit it's stride from jump.

I dunno if I agree as both are really well matched.

Who Watches the Watchers? was the first episode of TNG that I fully watched back in '90 when they used to re-air the new episodes on the weekend and was hooked.
