Variety: How ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘Call of Duty’ Are Pushing Xbox Ahead of PlayStation, Nintendo in a Next Gen Console-Less Holiday Season

They would be relevant in discussion covering the year, but this is specifically talking about releases in this holiday period, or this quarter let's say. Not sure what games released between January and July have to do with that.

Might as well rope in games from last year like MW3, Hogwarts etc that are still being played, and sold more than many games released earlier this year.

It actually sold 23% higher in its biggest market (US).

The UK is a much smaller market than the US, and those 'lower' numbers are an even smaller physical-only subset.

You're finally getting it. Those games are still relevant and will probably sell more copies this holiday season than Indy.

This is asinine thinking.

COD is boosting PS5 sales, effectively digging Xbox' hole deeper.
Pretty sure microsoft gave up on the boost xbox console sales. They are full open mostly.. also handing them the biggest group of people. And making more 💵MONENNEH💵

This isn't necessarily the best thing for the industry. PlayStation will be essentially unopposed in the console space since Nintendo is off in the corner doing its own thing and is never in any danger of long-term failure or insovlency.
I'm hoping the Switch 2 eats into Sony's lunch. If they want to do this extended cross gen + no real exclusives + handheld shit, Nintendo is primed to seriously damage them. Hopefully enough to convince them that all they should be doing is focusing on a semi-premium home console and be done with it.

That's remaining to be seen, but again, the point was that when this specific release window is being talked about, putting older examples is kinda pointless to the discussion.

Otherwise any 'success' story, you can derail just as easily by pointing out GTA V and Minecraft, two games that are persistent mainstays for almost a decade now.

PS5 Pro was released this November.
Just saying...

Even then, Indiana Jones won't be the biggest game this year, as the article incorrectly implied. Nor will it sell the most.

Deflection by trying to be witty, I guess?

The author incorrectly stated that there are no new consoles this Holiday season. And PropellerEar PropellerEar corrected by mentioning that PS5 Pro is indeed a new console that launched this Holiday season.

PS5 Pro is not a new generation of console.

The article is correct.

Only as if there is a new generation of consoles every year, and this year there are no new generation of consoles :D

Did Variety write an article like this last year citing the lack of a new generation of consoles too? Weird thing to focus on when the article is 1/ specifically about new game releases and 2/ mentions there's no new gen console launch. Both of these points seem to be glossed over with whataboutisms by some of yours and other users posts.

It's probably more succinct if you just call the article a 'shill piece' instead of trying to poke holes in its clear wording 🤷‍♂️

Ah, so this is where all the Indy doomsday shit flingers disappeared to.

Hey at least the OT and review threads are clean. I'll take that as an absolute win.

But the only objective way to describe it is purposefully misleading. The author went out of their way to misrepresent the gaming landscape, xbox's place in it and the motivation for that is either clicks, cash or a combo of both. Seeing it any other way is through the lens of green-tinted spectacles.

It's far closer to that than any form of neutral, unbiased, informative journalism designed to help inform holiday spending decisions.

It's pretty funny that a multiplat, and one of those pesky cinematic narrative games with (actually) mediocre gameplay are getting lauded as wins on the Xbox side. Fake credit and hypocrisy in one sandwich.

Having actually read some reviews, mostly on the higher side, I'm quite befuddled at the metacritic score, as I was with Halo Infinite, Starfield, and Spider-Man 2. The reviews themselves read more like a low 80s or a very high 70, especially if we're staying consistent; but nope. Apparently, visual attention to detail and a "glorified movie" is enough to get you in the top 15th percentile of major games today.
How many threads is this now?

You’re spreading it thick huh? Preach, brother, preach!

What horseshit.
Honestly, that particular wording makes me curious. Assuming ms paid for this article( which seems likely, imo) that wording, to me, indicates that ms is planning on announcing next gen soon. Wonder if it means we get a teaser for the next Xbox this tga( same way they did for series consoles in 2019).

I've contended that Xbox corporate made the right moves this gen. The Series X is a great piece of hardware with very generous backwards compatibility features. The developers just didn't deliver. They spent the money exactly where most of us would have thought it was a good idea to spend. Big Halo spending, big Arkane exclusive spending, Starfield etc. The devs who make those game just straight up failed. They're not good at their jobs. Just so happens that this year the developers they were depending on mostly pulled it off.

Now Sony and MS are just trading blunders. If either worked at full power this gen they could pull so far ahead of the other. Sony's stellar PS4 momentum has all but puttered out and now you see XB gaining a little ground.

How exactly is Xbox gaining ground? By what metric?

- Game Pass growth has stalled and it has been missing its growth targets 3 years in a row.
- Xbox software sales became so bad that they had to release its exclusives on PlayStation, with Phil saying "there are no red lines" anymore.
- Xbox Series X|S is selling even less than Xbox One, and the gap between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is now wider than what it was between PS4 and Xbox One.

By which metrics exactly are you thinking that Xbox is gaining ground against PlayStation? Genuinly curious.

Just hype amongst enthusiasts so far. It remains to be seen if it makes a difference in sales. So far in terms of concrete, the most I can say is that they're poised for a spike in sales. Time will tell. I'm not very attached to this prediction, just saying the moves they made this year actually worked out for once.

Worked out in what way? If it didn't lead to more xbox sales, more gamepass subscriptions then it didn't but two things

jack and shit.

Which "enthusiasts?" If you're talking about shills like Jez Corden, Ryan McCaffrey, and Destin...then yeah sure. Xbox is definitely winning the shill war.

Oh and Indiana Jones is a legit good game.

Microsoft gets a big release that scores well and Xbox fans across social media think they can make a comeback.

lol
What makes it funnier is that it happens every single time, and for like two weeks before Microsoft drops the next bad news for them :D

They're celebrating Indiana Jones and "Xbox's comeback" right now, and Microsoft would be preparing the next big PS5 Port announcement trailer to take all this wind from their sales :D

Well, won't really happen. But it also always the same with gamers in this forum. Microsoft releases an actually good single player game and console warriors are ... well "at their best" and are shitting around how Xbox sucks. This hurts sales and people are wondering why Ms next time won't work on single player games anymore...
Than there is a small twist because the game gets released on PlayStation and exactly those that formally cried about releasing something will happily play it on PlayStation while still whining about MS

And of MS leaves the hardware console market because of those console warriors with many false accusations we more or less have an console monopoly with PlayStation. I really don't want to see that. Sony is best when there are a bit under pressure, and currently they aren't.

I'm not hoping for anyone's lunch to get eaten. In the current environment, corporations tend to take all the wrong lessons from their failures. What I'm hoping is that there will be enough people in decision making positions focused on long-term success over short-term profits. Those are the people that drive decisions that are actually good for gamers, and ultimately the brand, in the long run.

There will be a more healthy industry between PC, PS and Nintendo. Each has their own specific demographic and whatever moves in between is negligible part of each demographic.

The only real 'battle' was between PS and Xbox, as Xbox was directly targeting the PS installbase (it's literally the reason they introduced Xbox).

Fanboys shit on Sony games all the time, but the conversation stops when the game performs well.

The problem is that much of the criticism from Xbox is the result of Xbox fans overhyping their product.

This article is funny because they believe Microsoft can undo the damage they have done to their brand with two new releases on their platform.

You actually think a forum like Gaf has any effect on real world sales?

And most people buying Xbox games on PS are double-dipping (former) Xbox-owners.

No problem giving appropriate props to a few good releases. But the whole "pushing ahead of Xbox and Playstation" assertion, especially based on two non-exclusive games that have just barely come out, kinda kills all credibility. Much like the opening of the article that ignores Pro exists while claiming there is no new hardware this year...with extremely careful language.

Sony and Nintendo have been "pushing ahead" of Xbox for years with game releases, only Xbox is so desperate they need to say "pushed ahead of THEM!" just for moving the needle.

Xbox marketing and PR behavior is pure cuck energy, only getting worse. But then, they ARE working for Sony now, so hey...

Exactly this.

What A Allandor is saying isn't exactly true. Show me one post in this thread by PlayStation fans that is along the lines of "Indiana Jones is a 3/10 trash game, on the same levels of Bleeding Edge or Redfall."

There are none.

So nobody is bringing down Indiana Jones the game.

But if somebody comes in saying that this Indiana Jones game, a ~4-month timed exclusive, is the big, fabled comeback of Xbox and is now the cause of pushing Xbox ahead of PlayStation and Nintendo will obviously be mocked.

FTFY. If I play this game, I'll use my PC. It's heavy on realistic graphics and in first person. Even though I have a Xbox console 🤷‍♂️
