Kadokawa Open to Sony Deal Under Certain Conditions

So basically, it's another analyst that thinks Sony is poor... (i mean, he is telling that Kadokawa values US$ 4.6 millions and Sony wouldn't have money for a full buyout!)

PS: I know, it's US$ 4.6 billions, but if the website doesn't know even how to make a conversion just to have more clicks, there's something VERY wrong! :-D
They bought bungie for 2.5 billion or whatever . 4.6 billion for the whole kadokawa is a cheap and not gonna be a problem to Sony

The japanese article itself is more interesting and it brings some valid points. One thing I keep thinking is Kadokawa is way too big and would bring many new/different areas, which would be very difficult to manage.

Sony is a conglomerate which more or less operates as a bunch of independent companies anyways. Adding Kadokawa to the mix wouldn't change a whole lot

3.6B actually, which makes a potential 4.6B bid for Kadokawa an absolute steal of a deal in comparison.
Good… I guess? What’s the benefit to me?
Elden Ring PS5 Pro patch, better performance & technical QA across all future titles, god-tier PC ports developed by Nixxes, perhaps even a new Tenchu.

I've heard this a lot, but it simply isn't accurate.

Difficult to manage how. Assuming Kadokawa keeps largely the same structure, it has now operating under Sony Music, how does managing them become difficult?

If anything it becomes easier because of the lines of distribution and increased budgeting.

The difference between a buy like this and a buy like ABK is that Microsoft has to actively manage ABK. Sony doesn't have to actively manage Kadokawa because the whole company doesn't need to be integrated with Sony. Some levels of integration sure, but in large part? They don't have to integrate at all.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is a separate entity than Sony Pictures, but they cross-collaborate easily through PlayStation Productions.

How dare Sony make the best souls game.
Simply outrageous!

Sony make? That’s a stretch.

With no fucking updates, no ports, abandoned because you chuds didn’t buy it enough clearly.

But Horizon Zero Dawn remaster?

With the way Bloodborne was treated, this is bad news for From fans.
I don't get this argument AT ALL, SIE getting From Software means that they want the studio and the games they make.
Also, with "they way it was treated", dear lord, stop being this weird around fucking game software. The game was made, it was playable on millions of PS4s out there, it's now playable on millions of PS5s, that's it; a remaster is nothing more than a nice bonus, and if we don't get it, it doesn't even matter.

Doubtful you’d get 900K concurrent players in Elden Ring 2 on Steam after delaying the game by over a year. The launch window and huge initial marketing push are very important.
Yeah every single late release on any platform gets a muted reception. That’s just how it is. Even just 6 months, or 3, affects the sales numbers negativity. Comes from less hype from being old news and dealing with increased negativity among those who can’t play it. Happens every time no matter the quality.

But ER2 is what 5-10 years away? I assume it’ll be about PlayStation launcher exclusivity by then and not PlayStation console exclusivity.

I'll try to make it as short as I can.

Even if they did get together, it doesn't mean all their goals are exactly the same and that Sony's leadership wants or needs every single thing Kadokawa's been doing. It's not like companies make acquisitions and simply let them do their thing, just adding the whole thing to your total. You get many assets that sometimes just don't make sense to your business plan. You might get overlapping roles, segments and products and after spending something around US$4.6 billion you're definitely cutting some expenses.

Is Sony interested on getting Yellow Jam, a subsidiary focused on planning live musical festivals and other events, or maybe Cool Japan Travel, which is a travel agency? They might even get some benefits from it, but does it make sense to the company business?

They might even go for a 50% ownership or something, but It's not a surprise that they tried this acquisition before but only going after gaming and anime.

Thank you. As if every game needs to be constantly ported or remade for each new system. BB is backwards compatible on ps5 and the servers are still up. That’s enough but people act like Sony is actively sabotaging the game.

This is an oversimplification. No two M&A are the same. And not all M&A result in layoffs.

Looking at whether an element of a new subsidiary is profitable or not is not the same as difficulty in managing the element/subsidiary.

Also not sure where you're getting 4.6 billion from.

Is Yellow Jam profitable? Is Cool Japan Travel profitable? If so, I doubt they'll do much there, at least initially. Long term, sure, maybe they look at offloading some of this stuff, but saying it would be difficult to manage is pretty baseless. Unless there is a pretty clear conflict of interest, I don't see many layoffs happening here and at worst I see companies being sold individually down the line.

You don't put in a letter of intent to buy 50% of the shares.

What? Fromsoft has been collaborating with Sony since the PSX days, and actually their best days have been after Elden Ring, change my mind.
Have I been in a coma? What year is this?

Has From Software released any game post Elden Ring? Are you talking about Armored Core 6? Is this a troll post?

Imo, DeSo and BB are their best.
Imo, Sony was there to check in on them to not over complicate the games and they are all the better for that more simplistic approach. But the only thing I hope this acquisition accomplishes is From using a modern engine.
Never seem anyone call Demon’s Souls their best work. It’s inferior to Dark Souls in every possible way.

It might not be important to many folks around here, but it also means way better localization efforts. Here's 2 examples:

Bloodborne (SIE published) - Title is dubbed in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish

Elden Ring (Bandai Namco)- Title is only Dubbed in English

Bloodborne (and Demon Souls remake for that matter) are dubbed in brazilian portuguese too.

I feel like this acquisition is more about Kadokawa's anime/manga IP than it is about From. From would just be a side dish Sony doesn't care much about.
I don't like how Gamers make this all about From Software, but this is another extreme that makes no sense to me. I really doubt they're seeing From Software as a "side dish" considering the interest they've been having on them for the past two years.

Side dish in the grand scheme of things. Sony want IP that they can monetise as part of there larger business, Kadokawa sits on a huge library of manga and anime works. From would be a bit part purchase in that regard, also considering how they've not really cared or showed significant interest in From Software IP in the past, I feel like it's a fair descriptor.

If Sony buys the company and they start releasing games on PS5 first then PC a year later or more. I might have to grab a ps5 pro after all.

Hoping for day 1 release on PC with PS but I don’t have high hopes .

On the plus side, this allow Form to dedicate its resources to one system only so hoping for better QA and Frame pacing since more focused on one system. But u know never with this company

Sony not releasing From Soft titles on PC (or delaying them significantly) should be the last of everyone's concerns.
Mostly because it would be a fucking retarded move and it's very unlikely they are going to do it and cripple the studio's profitability.

If anything it's far more worrying to think in what other ways Sony could meddle with the studio in general in terms (i.e. changes in overall management, stifling their creative freedom in one way or the other, asking for more diversity quota hires... That type of shit).

Sony have worked with From Software numerous times and recently (2 years ago) became From’s third largest shareholder.
So has Activision. Sony also invest in a lot of things to make money. Let's not forget how they abandoned Demon's Souls when it came out on PS3 only for Bandai Namco and Atlus to pick up publishing rights.

They’ve done other collabs since Demon’s Souls and are said to have another one already in the works.

IF this deal goes through, I very much doubt that Sony will keep heavy hitters like From's titles off other platforms.
Elden Ring sold shitloads on PC, and publishers (including Sony) are already struggling to sell enough copies of titles when they're stuck on a single platform (Final Fantasy being one obvious one).

If this makes it easier and better for the developers, sure why not. But when seeing how recent big Sony-brought studios are doing.. well, I have a bit of doubt.

Sony didn't abandon it..they just didn't publish it in some places.

I think if Sony has them partner with Bluepoint games they will not release day one on PC.
Be lucky to get those games in two years.

How many years has it been for Demon's Souls PS5 to release on PC?
Bloodborne also says 👋
