Kojima: Do you think of him differently after Metal Gear Solid 5 ? (NO SPOILERS)

I'm at 30% completion and I enjoy trying for ballsy ways to accomplish objectives, failing 15 times then finally making it.

The game is already GOTY for me
(Dem 60 fps!)
and now a lot of things Kojima said make sense (ex: About how GTAV made him sad because it's so good at open world) . It's also, by far, the best value any Metal Gear Solid I've ever played. The $20 for the demo are totally forgiven! The game would be a bargain at $200.

As Nicolas Cage would say, "That's high praise"

So, fellow Gaffers, Put aside all the Konami fuckery that has ruined the competitive aspect with pay2win microtransactions (instead of sticking to cosmetic items.

Put aside the poisonous semen they have covered FOBs with, and god knows what excrement they will shit all over MGO
, but I'm assuming it will be enough to cause vomiting and fainting
.

I'm assuming Konami forced Kojipro to put that stuff in.
(right?)
.

Putting those things aside, and imagining a universe where Konami loves us,
and releases SH and 2D Castlevania games every 3 years,
what do you think of Kojima now, and is it different than what you thought before?

Personally, I was disappointed with the story starting in MGS3, and MGS4 was a weak installment, but GZ gave me wild hopes and Phantom Pain exceeded the wildest of them (except story-wise, but I still like the themes tackled! B- ). I still think his writing is average, and he could make something akin to the best videogame of all time, something that would crush TloU if he would just use an outside writer with veto power :p.

I thought he was a Game director A+ before mgs5, I think he's a Game director A++ now ;)

So, do you think differently of him?

PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD SPOILER FREE. MANY THANKS FOR YOUR COOPERATION! :)

I've been thinking of him differently since mgs4

Like sure he would be Like a B in game development wing but he would be unsanitary

Still a genius.

But I do think he took a lot of the critism from 4 too harshly.

Still ended up with the best game of the franchise.

I think he bit off more than he could chew and blew past release dates and budget constraints while still not really finishing the game.

What's here is SO good, though, that it's disappointing how it ended up. It's a really well made game but I feel like Kojima and crew really just tried to do too much and Konami ultimately prevented it from happening (due to the exploding budget, no doubt). I mean, they tried to pull off a game as polished and impressive as the most linear of games with the same kind of detail we're used to in a Kojima game set within a massive open environment. It's insanely ambitious.

My opinion hasn't changed much. He was great before and still is. But I still have the feeling the game coulda been so much more.

I pretty much continue to view him the same way. Super ambitious and a perfectionist at the expense of game development time.

He had questionable choices throughout development.
The open world led to a game with a lot of waiting, going from one place to another.
The "silent protagonist but not really" thing with Snake didn't work too well.
His over ambition led to the game suffering greatly for it.
The gameplay and the few cutscenes that are in there are well directed, though. Even if the story was mostly dumb.

I just go back to the fact that I can't get what MGS offers me anywhere else in the gaming space. The man is simply one of a kind, and I'm someone who greatly appreciates the little touches he applies all over his games.

So yeah, same old admiration I had when MGS came out on PSone.

I always knew MGS was a bit childish. But, i was never prepared for how thoroughly he was willing to compromise the quality of storytelling with juvenile women.

Still have undying respect for him as a creator despite not liking many decisions made in MGSV. The only thing I think different is that he is a terrible business man.

One of the best games ever made and my 2015 GOTY. Can't stop playing it.

Edit: MGS 3 is my favorite story in the series and it was my favourite game in the series, but after playing MGS V, it is now my favorite game in the series.

In fact, I adore him more after MGS V, I never expected him to make the game so much fun to play. The freedom and creativity is on another level.

He's a genius nutcase. Nothing has changed. MGSV is my goty despite the numerous flaws. The stealth game play is on another level.

No not really. The gameplay was awesome and the story was silly. Same MGS story.

The only thing that would change my view of him is the fact that the game lacked conclusion and felt incomplete story wise. We may never know why this was but I really hope one day there will be a tell all on the production of this game.

nah. In retrospec, he hadn't done a good game to me since Portable Ops and he went back on and erased it from Canon.

MGS4 was a clusterfuck,
Portable Ops was weird as fuck
MGSV is terribly flawed.

I mean, its gameplay it god tier, but everythibg else that made MGS special, isn't so good ever since MGS3

After witnessing MGS4 I saw Kojima in a different light but not for the better. He still has some wonderful ideas and quirks. But it was obviously his time to go from MGS.

Great game designer. Good game director. Awful writer.

Pretty much, never realized how much Fukushima did for the series.

I still think he's great.

Additionally, I think the Phantom Pain wasn't the game he really wanted - I get the feeling that suits from Konami either forced him to rush it or add all that extra FOB bullshit

After Peace Walker and MGSV, i think he'd be better served if someone else handled the writing and game-flow whilst he concentrated on the "game" part. He's clearly a talented man.

He's a genius that is among the ranks of Miyamoto and John Carmack for gaming.

He just had the misfortune of being affiliated with Konami. With a good publisher backing him, MGS5 had the potential to be the greatest game of all time.

Nah, still love the guy. Admittedly, MGSV has missing content but the core of the game is still superb.

I still love the dumb bullshit he comes up with in his stories but he really does need a partner to reel him in every now and then so the story can at least be comprehensible.

Worse than I did before MGS V.

After Ground Zeroes he was a little bit higher than before, but now after V he stands pretty low.

I feel about the same as I did after Peace Walker.

Which is perpetually disappointed.

Metal Gear 1 + 2, plus MGS 1-3, are are an incredible achievement in this medium. They are emergent, they are experimental, and they are artistic. They mark Kojima as one of gaming's greatest auteurs.

I do not feel this way about his later games. MGSV having great gameplay isn't enough for me, that's not why I ever played this series.

Oh well. It makes it easier to not be disappointed that he won't be making any more Metal Gears.

I do think of him differently, yes.

I'd say he's improved as a game designer in some ways while he's regressed in others. The mechanics of MGSV are unparalleled and deserving of praise but much of it is simultaneously superfluous and badly implemented which is a bit boggling considering how incredibly tightly knit the previous games were and how everything was incredibly deliberate with no real uninspired padding.

It's also nice of him to have the story take a bit of a backseat but it's a shame that what story is there is wholly forgettable and pretty terrible. It's hard of me to imagine that the same guy who wrote MGS2 and 3 also wrote this incredibly poor story. Context is incredibly unsatisfying in this game.

More than anything I think Kojima has gotten too attached to his characters. Especially Big Boss. He's been in this gig for too long that I feel like franchise's tone has been overall lost in a haze of experimentation. It's no wonder since very few franchises have one guy attached for so long but I'm starting to feel he's dying to do something new for a change.

What is that random link in the OP?

a really awesome article I just read. Can you imagine a Saudi Arabia losing 90% of their oil revenues? Why did I include it? It was an accidental copy paste from when I shared it on facebook, and I figured I'd leave it and see how long it would take for someone to actually read the op and comment on it. So far, it looks that only about 20% of the people do, lol. Congrats on being the first!

Kojima is a great game director but he needs to be controlled. Some of his decisions in MGS5 were bad and someone needed to call him out on it.

And it isn't like the old games hadn't great gameplay too.

Great designer, bad writer, bit of a perv, overrated in the context that he gets all the credit whilst the KojiPro team is barely mentioned.

Pretty much what I thought before. MGS3 remains the best of the series by a big margin.

I enjoy his humor and that is about it. But MGSV on the whole for me is a bloated, boring slog with some truly odious design choices that does not respect my time or my intelligence. Sorry, I just don't think he is the messiah of gaming that many make him out to be.

I realized he likes to fuck with fan's expectations and I respect him more now for having the balls to do it again, especially in this era.

MGSV will probably be my GOTG so my opinion of him hasn't changed, still think he's amazing.

Yup. Man, where have you seen someone handle a series and making it relevant even after 20+ years? Not only that but each game added tons of new shit on the gameplay side of things with MGS5(as well as GZ) being the biggest most improved change within the series from a gameplay stand point. As for the story well, I love them all with the exception of PW, I just liked it but that's just me. There's nothing like MGS, period.

Yes, i think Konami did the right thing by giving him the boot (im only talking about their decision to fire him).
its fucking embarrassing to think that he spent 5 years and shitton and money and this is what he have to show for it.

- Bad open world.
- Repetitive missions (reminded me of early AC games).
- Laughable story.

At this point im not even acknowledging it as a metal gear game, Rising is my MGS 5.

I still consider Hideo Kojima one of the better idea men out there. His skill with a narrative and cinematography is often unequaled.

Who knows where the malicious, stupid vileness of the FOB monetization came from. Maybe it was half Hideo, half some sycophant Konami producer.

gameplaywise the game is nuts. it has great value, iam 50hours in and still going strong.

but the story in mgs5 is really bad.

its konami and kojipros problem that they were making continuesly only mgs games. why not a new IP? why not another zone of the enderS? why nothing like policenauts or snatcher???

sad that konami kills itself, and i hope its good that kojima is now free and will make new revolutionary games....

Not really.

I think the guy's got a great sense for the little details when it comes to gameplay mechanics but I've never found him to be a good storyteller and TPP really accentuates that. Dude needs an editor or a second set of eyes in general.

no. the concept of 'godjima' ended for me with 3, and then i plunged into straight kojima-atheism with 4.

but i strangely enjoyed peace walker when i didn't expect to, and i think mgsv took the gameplay to unseen heights of enjoyability.

kojima is self conscious as fuck and takes criticism of his games pretty seriously. probably to the point where we've swung back and forth against several extremes in an attempt to please people. it's just mgsv for me is a very palatable extreme that i can enjoy.

Moving on from Metal Gear is for the best.

Hopefully he can create what he wants to instead of chasing some big trend or doing what other people tell him to.

Yeah I do think differently of him. Much less in fact.

MGSV lacks the creativity and imaginative gameplay twists of previous games.

The best thing about V is that I got to replay the previous games and have a better appreciation of them.
