Laura Fryer - The Games Industry Elephant

At the Game Awards, Swen from Larian shared the secret for winning Game of the Year. It sounded simple enough, so why are games like Avowed and Assassins Creed Shadows already mired in controversy? What happened to common sense around content choices and why would a leader get into a public fight with Elon Musk? Let's discuss the Elephant in the Room using real examples from Gears, Fighter Ace and a little-known project that Xbox decided to pass on.

The incentives that are lobbed by acquiescing to the consulting firms is the biggest problem. The firms themselves care only for the maligned message they want to spread and care nothing about the game itself that is being worked on while the companies only care for the profits... This leaves the dedicated devs that do care with the frustrating task of making their games worse as a result. From what i've noticed the GAAS games seem to have better protections against the consulting firms because the whole point of those products is to design it to milk the userbase as much as possible.

I like this woman's videos. I've always found them insightful, especially with her background in the industry.
Yeah, makes such a difference when people are able to call on real world expertise and experience to contextualise a lot of this.

She's also not brash, obnoxious or loud or farming engagement. And to be honest it helps us all when we have voices like this who speak over those labelling everyone as bigots and racists.

I’ve not seen a video from her before, but I’ll subscribe. I enjoyed the stories and how they fed into the larger point.

"If you're wondering why I'm optimistic, it's because I believe in people. I think there are only a few people causing this divisiveness. It is not the majority. Most people want things to be better, and so they will be. And I believe we will eat that elephant together one bite at a time."

That was a good video, and perhaps it's her age and experience but her views chime with mine. I'm pleased to have lived through enough decades of games simply being fun - rather than being polarizing.

Both sides on this argument go too far. For people like me who just want to innocently enjoy the hobby like they did as a kid, coming on to forums like Resetera and Neogaf can feel like entering a warzone.

Just shows how immature that lead dev on avowed is. The fact he doesn't give a shit about the whole team and believes it's more important to express his views on the world regardless of how much negative impact it places on the game and workers. But, that's the mind of these people today. It's all me me me.

She sounds like a woman who worked in the industry based on her own merits and ability, and was not a diversity hire. That's why she makes so much sense. She's from a time before a lot of the bull shit infested the industry, and sadly it seems like people like her are working in the industry less and less.

I'm playing BG3 right now, and while it's not woke, I do sometime question why all the women are warriors and the men can't wield a great swords.

The fact this woman is now making YouTube videos, instead of still making games, is probably all you need to know about the games industry.

Looking at her career, my guess is that she is already in her 50's and retired from the videogames industry.
There aren't many people still working in the videogames industry past 50. In part because of burnout and the long hours. In part because it usually pays well, and people can retire early.

I didn't know anything about this lady prior to watching this video but I really enjoyed the content.

Good points and they were excellently put.

I like her level headed viewpoint but honestly it feels a bit too optimistic and naive. Many of the modern cultural issues go way beyond just games, too many people in the industry believe and follow the notion of entertainment being tools for shipping culture and shaping views, its an active part of the set of ideologies that is contributing to said conflict.

They're not just going to drop dead. Best case scenario for gaming would be if the companies making games finally realize this doesn't work, that pursuing it only does harm and they began reigning in those people.

Great video, again. Laura Fryer does an excellent job of pointing out and breaking down problems with the game industry. She also does it without sounding patronizing or insane like some other ragebait content creators that cover this stuff. An actual reasonable voice is needed for subjects like this right now.

As for her comments on the Avowed Art Director, Laura is totally right in criticizing him. His choosing to engage at all with Twitter Bullshit is going to be a talking point with the game, when it should not be at all, and that does hurt the developers working on the game who very likely want no part of it. I can just imagine a frustrated dev at Obsidian looking at what was going on and saying, "Goddammit, look at this jackass." And if he was willing to say that on a public platform, you can only picture the internal comments from him being worse.

The culture war shit is exhausting to see from every angle, no matter the field, interest, industry, or forum, for that matter. I'm so fucking over and done with all of it.

I found it interesting how back in the day so much analysis and forethought went into will this game appeal to the broadest market. Whereas now, game development seem to get no scrutiny over what shite they put into games. Maybe it's time for publishers to get their hands dirty again and start having oversight on these assholes

Microsoft. Hire ger back, please.
Screw that Sony hire her where she can still do some good or Nintendo hire her and Reggie to go around and be a gaming consultant that actually knows what games need to improve and eat up that SBI marketshare.

With the backlash these games are getting, why are the devs not mad at the consultants? I thought the purpose of the consultants was to prevent this exact controversy. It's like they are not connecting the two things.

Yeah, Sony might need her with their DEI push. They could just do with cloning her and get her to go everywhere lol
