LG C2 : Wi-fi (and Ethernet) constant internet disconnects

Hey boys

This has been a well documented problem for years now judging by the number of posts on the internet.
I'm going to be honest, i mainly use my C2 as a gaming TV so i don't frequently use its internet capabilities/features but, i don't remember it being THIS bad.
After turning ON the TV, internet/apps work fine but as soon as i start switching/fiddling between them a couple of times (say, watching Youtube for a a couple of minutes, go back to the home screen, open Spotify, listen to some music, go back to home screen, open LG channels) the internet connection drops (black screen on apps/nothing loads) even though the Wi-fi is still connected (by checking in the TV's network settings)
This can be replicated EVERY TIME by doing the above.

I've tried pretty much everything :
- Latest firmware (obviously) 13.30.85
- Static IP on my C2
- IPV6 to OFF
- Google DNS (8.8.8.8)
- Having 2 different SSIDs (2.4GHz & 5GHz) set, connection drops with both of them
- Gave my C2 priority in my TP-Link's settings
- Factory reset the TV

Router sits in the same room as my C2 by the way.

NOTHING seems to help - but here's the kicker - the behavior is the exact same even when i hardwire the TV via Ethernet (and yes, i manually turn the Wi-fi option to OFF when doing so as per some tips on the Internet).
Again, i don't remember this being such a problem and IMO, it's something that got worse with a FW update (?).

Kicker No.2 : After pulling my hair in frustration for 2 hours straight, i tried something else : connecting the C2 via my phone's Wi-fi hotspot and, to my surprise, everything works as it should, as in, i have no internet drops whatsoever !
So, theoretically, that should take the C2's Wi-fi/Ethernet module being faulty out of the equation since it works properly via Hotspot and it's probably my Tp-link archer AX53 wi-fi 6 router that's to blame ? But why ? everything else works perfectly fine (PS5, iPhone, Ipad, Tab S9, S24U, laptop, Tower PC etc etc), it's just the G'damned C2 that constantly drops its connection.

I don't know what to do at this point, bought the C2 on December 2022 so i still have a couple of months of Warranty left - is this a hardware thing ? Did this got worse via a shitty FW update ? Is there something that can be done/options to enable via my router ? Is there a permanent fix after 2 years ?
And oh, getting an Android box would be like trying to "fix" the problem by throwing more money at it, it's inexcusable that this is still a thing...

Thanks in advance for any replies, cheers

PS : I've been reading that this is a thing even on Sony TVs etc and it's due to the bad/cheap network cards these TVs have, can anyone confirm ?

Is it just C2 or C3 as well? Got couple of C3s (monitor and TV use) that I can check. I don’t use smart TV features on these so never noticed.

Hey Stereo, judging by the number of posts on Reddit, this is a thing even on the G2/G3/C3 ffs...
Some say that a hardwired connection helps, others that it's some sort of incompatibility between specific routers and the TV's network card etc etc.

I'm at my wit's end here

Thanks for chiming in brother ;)

I will be able to check in couple hours so will let you know.

I haven’t even noticed anything since one TV I use as a monitor and the other one has AppleTV hooked up. Never even opened the apps interface except by mistake, lol.

have no problems like this on B2 (Ethernet) but LG "OS" is so shit I can believe it can behave like that.

Might be obvious question but have you tried restoring factory settings?

Or/and pull it from electricity, wait few minutes and plug again. Sometimes only this helped me with issues on B2.

I'd stick with wired over WiFi personally. I've had my LG OLED77G26LA connected via a cat 6 ethernet cable since day one without any issues. I appreciate you might not be able to do this though.

That's a bit concerning, I've been thinking of upgrading my Bravia to one of the latest LGs. I don't have those issues on that old TV from 7 years ago...

Here is what i would do:

Try another router and if it's not the router sell the tv or use the console/pc for internet apps.

But i wouldn't spent much more time on this. Contacting LG will be time consuming.

hey Boj, yes, i hard-reset AND factory reset my TV yesterday to no avail.

Put, as i said in my 1st post, problem persists even when hardwired for some G'damned reason

I'd suggest that it is the router. Buy a different router from a store with a good return policy and test it out.

Shake, i got rid of the shitty ISP provided router since it would give me problems with pretty much everything (it had ports blocked which you couldn't even manually open amongst other things), couldn't even remote play with the darned thing...
Got the TP-Link AX53 which is jolly good, very customizable, has every option you could think of and i NEVER had a problem for the (almost) years that i've had it, it's just the G'damned C2 that is doing my head in...

you know what Cake ? Since i got it from Amazon i could always take it back/ask a refund (i think) but - and here's the kicker - what should i replace it with ? C3/C4 still have the same problem and from what i'm reading, even Sonys do, besides, for some strange reason, most mid-upper range TVs from what i've seen start from 65 inches and up (Bravia 7/9, Hisense U8N for example) and i don't have the space to accomodate such sizes...

Man, fuck this shit, i've forgotten how much of a ball-ache is to find the "proper" TV

Geez. This is a common problem on these sets? I've been looking at hopping into the OLED game. Right now my house if full of TCL Roku TVs. The HDR sucks but we've never had connectivity problems with any of them. Got 5 online every day.

My suggestion is disconnect your TV from your network, use it as a dumb screen and use Apple TV or Roku, or even your gaming console for media apps.

I mean, i could always get a Google TV streamer 4K (Chromecast got discontinued) or an Apple TV but, as i said in my opening post, that would be throwing more money at a problem that shouldn't be there in the 1st place, i should expect at the very minimum from a (then) 1300 Eurodollars TV to be able to hold its internet connection for crying out loud...

Apparently it is Simpatico, there are posts from 2+ years ago describing the same exact problem which still persists in newer models

I don't recommend using LG OS or any smart TV built-in software. They are all junk and will get slower over time, most of them push ads, and some spy on your viewing activity.

Have you considered buying an Apple TV or some other streaming box to use? You can then move it from TV to TV when you replace them, and disable networking entirely on the TV.

It's the same as the built-in speakers. They aren't very good, and you probably shouldn't be using them if you care even a little bit.

I empathize about how spending that much money should get you basic functionality that works reliably. But that just isn’t the world we live in with these shitty smart TVs and their poorly supported apps and bare minimum hardware specs. Spend a little more and get a good product that will work with any of your other devices. Upgrade the box every several years for a hundred and keep the dumb old screen - you’ll save so much money like this.

Returning to Amazon isn't that easy anymore. At least in Germany they got repair centers for that and i had an issue with a cheap LG a couple of years ago. My tv was gone for 3 weeks.....

Maybe try a Samsung S95, heard they are great and they are available in 55".

Got a 2022 Sony (FALD not OLED) with 0 software issues, super happy with it. Even got an update 2 weeks ago.

And yes i feel you, i had to go through 4 tvs to get the right one for me. and it sucked because returning or selling a tv is stressful and time consuming.

Do you have the first run of c2's or the updated panel c2.

What size is it?

Guys, since many of you recommend getting an external android streaming box/Apple TV/Rokku/whatever - the thing is that i don't know whether this is a hardware thing or a software one, meaning, if this IS a TV/Hardware thing and i decide to "just get a streaming box" , i'd be keeping a - basically - faulty product which would be a shame since i still have 2 months of warranty left.

...then again, judging by the myriad of posts regarding this problem, it's probably a hardware/software thing that affects pretty much a good percentage of (LG) TVs out there - not that it's an excuse but...

I think it's the one with the EVO Panel, got the 55 inch brother

Disable WiFi and try a USB to Gb Ethernet adaptor (cable matters is decent)

I've already said that it's somehow tied to my Router since both Wi-fi AND Ethernet keep dropping my connection - something which doesn't happen when i use my phone's hotspot to connect to my TV.
Getting a GB ethernet adapter would still require to hardwire the TV to my router so i don't know how that'd actually help...

Thanks for the input friend ;)

The 42 and 48 inch didn't in beginning. My 48 C2 doesn't ever have connection issues.. I should have asked the size first

Since the problem maybe seems to be tied to your router you could try changing the wifi channel or changing the channel width. (For example my router has 289 Mbps for 20 MHz, 600 Mbps for 40 MHz, 1300 Mbps for 80 MHz. I have a netgear router but Tplink might have different options.) Just for troubleshooting sake. Not sure why the ethernet connection would drop too though.

Like others have said though, built in TV software is pretty trash and typically gets worse over time with updates/ads. Usually best to just pick up your choice of a streaming box.

This right here. I use a USB to Ethernet adapter on my C1. I tested the connection through the Netflix app. It's faster than if I just plugged the Ethernet cord directly into the TV. The network menu on the TV says it's not connected. But everything online works just fine.
Good idea.

Apple TV is extremely solid. No issues whatsoever. And of course if you are already in Apple’s ecosystem you got a lot of options

Google has its equivalent now as well.

Called Amazon, described my problem and they're gonna send an LG technician over my place.

I'm fucked, at best he's gonna swap the network card/board, at worst he ain't gonna do nothing, which brings me to :
I've been reading posts of people swapping them for new ones from the shop they bought them from to no avail since the problem persists even on the new TVs - this is purely an OEM el-cheapo network card thing which LG doesn't acknowledge (obviously), I mean, shit, 90% of the posts on avsforums and reddit predate the C8 and are in the vein of "got an Android box/apple TV in the end" something which doesn't sit well with me since that's literally throwing more money at a problem that shouldn't be there in the 1st place.

I don't see how throwing 200+ Eurodollars for an Nvidia shield (300 for the pro) which are 5years old at this point, 190 for the Apple TV 4K or 110 for a (new) Google TV streamer is considered to be a "fix" ffs.

Mine is in the shop being repaired but my WiFi and Ethernet never had issues but I only used it for a screen for my STB and consoles. But it is being repaired for turning off on its own all the time and not turning back on until a day later. Idk if a main board could be causing both issues.

It’s certainly not ideal and LG shouldn’t have cheated out to save extra $5/€5 on $1,500+ TV sets.

Personally I like Apple TV as it’s quick, easy to use, has all apps one would need and more, and my whole family can easily control it or throw AirPlay on it.

I haven’t even thought of using native TV apps as they have always kind of sucked.

Never had that issue on my C1 but like 1-2 times a year the Wifi will just stop working. In the menu it will show up as disabled and won't let me enable it. The only fix I've found is to disconnect the TV from the outlet so it does a proper reset

Honestly I don't think your TV's internet connection is Gaming related but the solution is to never plug any brand of Smart TV into the Internet in the first place so you don't get assaulted by ads from the second you turn it on

Apple products are certainly pricey. However they are far from having a “shitty” ecosystem. They work very seamlessly with each other, not having a lot of friction in use between Phone, Tablet, PC and TV. And performance is top notch overall for what they provide (price aside).

Samsung has something similar but not as good and they are also fairly pricey now days.

It’s the best tv streaming box out there by far. Most standalone units are better than the built in Tv OS.

If you HAVE to connect your TV to the internet then this is the best way, the ethernet adapters in these TVs are pretty damn cheap and crazily a lot top out at 100Mbit/s, a nice branded adapter like this performs much better and will get you better speeds if you have a fast connection that's over 100Mbit/s.

Any ecosystem that forces you to register a credit card, even to download free apps, and prevents you from installing whatever you want is shit to me. Android does all that Apple does, and much much more, for far less money. That's what matters to me.

I dont use Apple products aside from a company cellphone and it's fine. I have an older one, but its decent.

But I'd never support the company outside of that freebie. I find it a rip off, dont support walled off ecosystems, and I find a lot of the customers annoying (like my sis in laws and nieces who are Apple nuts but have zero technical skills, but want it just because everyone does).

USB 2.0 Max speed is still 480mbs

Higher than a 100mbs that is probably in your TV.

True but you aren’t getting those things for free. Google sells data more liberally. Personally I would rather Apple have all my data then google selling it off to anyone that wants it.

I felt the same way for the past five years. I decided to actually try my Sony A95K connected online and using the native apps instead of my Apple TV. It uses "google tv" as the OS, which has an "apps only" mode. You still see a single static banner at the top of the apps screen with whatever bullshit TV show recommendation they are pushing, but that's the only ad I have seen anywhere within the OS.

After using the native Plex, etc app for about six months, I knew I wasn't going back to the Apple TV. I had two of them in my house. Sold them both. Served me well since 2017.

I'll also mention that I am using the TV Ethernet port. Never had any issues. It plays remuxed (direct Blu-ray rip, no further compression) 4K HDR movies without a hitch. I have a Mac mini as the source.

Oh shit. Thanks! In that case maybe I will try it out. The dongle is only $21 CDN. Maybe when I do some Xmas shopping off Amazon soon I'll add that.

Even though you responded to jonnyp with the second point, I agree with that point. I'm pretty sure Apple isnt as liberal with user data like Google whose business model is all about search and ads.

For me, I find the prices and people a turn off. I can live with family being Apple promoters, but what really put me over the edge even though I always knew Apple fans skew to evangelists was literally that. About 15 years ago when iPads were new (whenever they came out), here I am sitting in my office at work plugging away. Next thing you know "Apple Amanda" comes by. I barely even work with her, but hey you never know what's to come. It's either going to be a quick hey how ya doing? Or she needs some help with some data. Turns out she was going around the office from cubicle to cubicle and room to room showing everyone her new iPad and she'd use her finger on it demoing it in your face and if you wanted to try it out yourself.

Crazy.

Yeah, thanks Amanda. Cool. See ya.
