Living with adult autism/neurodivergence .

Yeah, I don’t know man. I think it’s all bullshit and these doctors are only in it for the money.
Big pharma came up with this shit about autism and the spectrum shit just to sell meds for something they came up with and the doctors are laughing all the way to the bank.

Your only funding their lifestyle.
Cause everyone is on some sorta spectrum. Instead of calling yourself half retarded for some kind of sympathy fetish just say you can’t mentally handle some things or just say I’m mentally weak.

All my opinion..

Congrats on your self diagnosed autism.
Dude for the life of me I cannot find out if you're one of the greatest trolls of all time or one of the worst attention whore to ever post in a internet forum.
Everytime the scale tips toward one, you post something that tilts it the other way.

Past life. Still wondering why this thread got bumped, though. It's not about me, son.

No, not everything is bullshit, but surely in our age a lot of people are trying to put a label on their behavior for some reason.

I suggest you though to keep an open mind and not downplay something you might not understand at the moment.

Yep. It's the same with gender and sexuality. People are so obsesses with this subject they've invented dozens upon dozens of gender identities (plus a wild assortment of different flags). The only reason why so many kids today are LGBTQ+ is because the range of what's normal masculine and normal feminine behavior has become so narrow and struct that kids think they must be transgender or queer if they're tomboys or slightly effeminate.

Overdiagnosing normal human behavior leads to no good IMO.

I'm a car crash, apparently 'low on the spectrum' (not that I really think or do much about it beyond some people occasionally pointing out that I think weird, so to speak..), ADD (the 'H' was only there briefly in childhood). I developed Depersonalisation & Derealisation at 12yrs old and still suffer with it at 32yrs old. I was irresponsibly prescribed SSRIS off-label for the DP/DR at ~20 (brain still developing) and now I have permanent Akathisia and intermittent Anhedonia as a result.

Good times.

I remain convinced that ADD is less of a pathology and more of a phenotype that's exaggerated by various factors, then compounded by the modern world which on one hand is less conducive to it and on another hand hooks into it and takes advantage of it. If shit hits the fan I'm the coolest person in the room, if everything is normal I can barely function; I think some of us are just wired for that.

The flimsy executive function of ADD paired with the torture of akathisia can be a rough ride at times.

There's no autism drug. People with autism don't always think of themselves as disabled, that's your own bias. Would love for you to approach some autistic person minding their own business at the grocery store and set them straight telling them you don't feel any sympathy for them because they're not half retarded just mentally weak, but that's just like your opinion.

Family members have ADHD diagnosis. I have lots of the traits. Had to fill in a questionnaire at the Doctors a lot of the questions were very relevant to me the doc mentioned how ADHD is hereditary.

Always been labelled a day dreamer in school etc.
I was just officially clinically diagnosed with ADHD. I do not believe in self-diagnosis but I always figured I had it. I am supposed to schedule for an autism diagnosis soon but I'm not too confident.

Plus, it's very difficult to get diagnosed with autism as an adult. So if there was this big industry you'd think they make it easier. But it's not.

A few months ago, I thought I might be on the spectrum. I had seen some Youtube videos that described the syndrome, and I identified with parts of it -- for instance, the sense of feeling different ("wrong planet syndrome"), some difficulties with forming relationships and communicating. I spent about 2-3 weeks studying it intensively.

Eventually, I figured out that I was not on the spectrum. The YT videos I'd seen initially were too broad in their descriptions. I needed to read the experts and dig into it deeper, before I grasped the subtleties.

But during those few weeks, I learned a lot about autism. I developed more understanding and empathy for people who have this condition (if that's the right word). It is tough to live with, for sure. Some of the comments I read broke my heart. Most "NTs" have no understanding.

("wrong planet syndrome")

Man that hits home!

I've always used "Earth Tourist" Lmao. Looking at the world as if you see all of it (and it's function) for the very first time can be quite entertaining!

I'm with you on the ' how does this work/specific way of explaining to understand stuff.

"Some of the comments I read broke my heart. Most "NTs" have no understanding."

Most see the worst toxic examples and take those as their point of reference going further.

Thoughtful kind post <3

looks like I’ve some research to conduct

More awnsers more question, right Skip...

Congrats on your self diagnosed autism.

Everytime the scale tips toward one, you post something that tilts it the other way.

Thought it was a new thread. Well bait or not, at least some could tell their experiences I guess.

Remember the aftermath of the purple poison situation. Grown adult persons (on here as well) using autisme as an denigrating umbrella term? Good times =/

There's an initiative to categorize everyone in some kind of disorder now. Everyone apparently needs pills and a therapist. A lot of money changing hands.

It's okay to be different. Sometimes it benefits from formal treatment, but sometimes you just need to accept yourself and work on living a well-balanced life.

Sometimes it's not okay though, or at least it feels that way.

Can be very isolating and difficult to navigate certain scenarios and social situations.

I most definitely see where you're coming from;

"sometimes you just need to accept yourself and work on living a well-balanced life."

Wise words for all.
"A lot of money changing hands."

A LOT.

Psychology & Psychiatry are relative speaking in it's infancy as well, when combined with the general state of mental healt, feelings/thoughts of embarrassment (cultural dependent in some cases), male or female, waiting lines, rookie "specialists" eager to seek a diagnosis, the pharmaceutical industry and lack of inter-personal help doesn't help either.

Keep in mind this is a very complex and nuanced topic so don't take my thoughts on this for my own pov set in stone for this was far from my intention.

Edit: post was made while not fully awake lol

I don't even think it's bait, but i also don't think German is autistic.
All in all im not a mental health physician so my opinion is based on nothing, and is not to be taken as anything more than edgy posting.

I know you have a very real struggle with mental health as well as a lot of those who posted on the thread, and you are right, at least this thread enabled people to share their feelings and experiences, and just for that it is more useful than any i ever made.

Anyway, it was never my intention to denigrate mental health issues or the ones struggling with them. I m sorry for appearing that way.

I think the Boss said it best

Let's not forget that mental health medicines are the only medicine that aren't designed to cure you, they are designed to enable you to life a somewhat normal (as in what is the norm in the society you're in) life. Which means lifelong customer when diagnosed, if one couldn't see the incentive for big pharma to have everyone under this or that "mental health problem" umbrella.

No worries Toots, no need to apologize; wasn't my intent to moan. Just conveying some observations. It's all good. <3

I think there's a difference between people who "want" to have an autism diagnosis and people who get it kicking and screaming. One is a person who is enticed by it, the other is forced to accept that it's a real hinderance in his life.

That's autism though. With the gender debate I think it's mostly just special little bees who seek confirmation and think it's fashionable to call themselves xir/xer. Or group pressure. There is an incredible natural variance in both genders and people discover more of themselves as they get older and a guy might realize that they don't have to like cars and technical stuff like his friends and that it's okay to think emotions and deep thinking is more interesting. I often think about Jeff Goldblum who said in an interview that when he was younger he tried to keep up this image of him as very typically manly, but eventually he realized he could be himself. He's straight with a wife and a kid, but has very funny interviews with Conan O'Brien where he goes off talking about the texture of a leather table or a poem about dappled things. He seems to have a great sensitivity and that fits perfectly fine in the male gender. There's no need to invent new words for it.

Some time ago I got asked what ASS (lol) symptoms I have/dealing/etc with.

I was initially stumped because it's so ingrained and hence normalized that on first thought my mind went blank. Sure I could give some examples but when one goes out of their comfort zone it's far more apparent/confrontational; Like ✅️ 'n boxes: Oh yeah this and this and this ad nauseum.

Sure, I could have autsime, got diagnosed in my late 20's which made for a lot of retrospective "ahh so that's why 'X' etc" moments. Nevertheless it has it's upsides. I do struggle with communication, especially via a text based medium as GAF.

Then again I've embraced it and working on other stuff like childhood trauma (CPTSS/Body Dismorphia/Etc)

Life's full of lessons don't be sleeping <3
