It's going to do at least 100-40k, so yeah, I'd expect that.

At best it'll do a nice 250-300k, but I don't have a ton of faith in it.

I've got to hand it to Galaxy 2. It's sticking around longer than I expected it to.

Wii Party to hit 1 Million within a month? There's a good chance.

BASARA 3 will end up at 500K pre-budget release. 400K PS3, 100K Wii.

Yeah, I meant to post this last week but never got around to it:

Considering that 4gamer contributed a rather large article to the 2010 Media Create White pages(The role of new media in the game industry), I would say they have a rather close relationship and obviously it isn't just 4gamer going off on it's own.

Software driven hardware boosts are unusual this late in a generation, and the first Ace Combat X didn't do much. It comes down to the MHD spinoff bundle.

PS2 sales from PS2 monthly Top 10 are way down from 2009 which were already very low.

2010 JAN-JUL: 381.724

PS2 sold a total software of 3.230.000 in 2009 but this year it's very hard to sell even 1 million since there almost zero new titles from now until the end of the year.

But the recent PSP softwares boosted its sales a little bit, past weeks.
I'm not talking about doubling sales, but 40k+ instead of 30k+.

Project Diva 2 pushed the PSP past the DS, I can't see why a MH spin-off can't do the same, especially with a bundle on offer.

Looks pretty good and is doing pretty well for an outsourced Nintendo game.

Goddamn with the DS, when it seemed it was finally going to slow down a bit preparing the ground for its successor, Nintendo goes 'hey everyone couple of thousands yen off every model' and bam >50k consistently again.

It makes PSP look bad, it makes consoles look horrible, it makes 3DS launch look way too early...goddamn with the DS :lol

technically its not outsourced its by ND Cube a first party developer. but its not by EAD so in that sense its outsourced.

It's probably headed and supervised by Nintendo veterans but a first party developer in Nintendo's case is pretty much still considered outsourced.

Nintendo's using the 3DS to test the waters on third parties, and they probably thought third parties would treat the Wii a little more kindly and thus started R&D on the 3DS earlier. The 3D fad probably made the decision even easier. The DS is what got me into sales-age and I'm still amazed to this day how well it sells, it just goes to show how much price drops can help popular consoles. Nintendo let the Wii stagnate on the same price for far too long.

It's by the same people who did all the Mario Party games though. The only thing that changed is that they moved to an employer more close to Nintendo (from 3rd party Hudson to 1st party Nd Cube).

About DS. Someone has said 2-3 years ago in these threads that it would sell 35-40M in Japan and people laughed at him but he was right after all.

3DS will cut its sales a little this December and I don't see it doing more than 3-3,5M this year.
Even with the pessimistic scenario of 3M this will bring it to a total of 32,3M (GB/GBC is at 32,43M). It's guaranteed that its LTD will be bigger than 35M and it has a shot to come close to 40M if Nintendo doesn't abandon it completely like GBA.

I don't think any other console ever again will come close to this number.

Uh, it may have gone up a spot but it dropped in sales - this wasn't some kind of bump for the title, it's still falling off.

That said, Capcom must be chuffed to bits with the performance of the game. Great improvement on earlier entries.

Eh, I was joking bout the 3DS but if you want to discuss that then its entirely possible, simply because the 3DS will get major support from all the third parties, no longer is the consoles power an issue anymore. The PSP is still competition to the DS back then, and DS is going to sell on the backs of old software. Japan is getting more handheld heavy with each passing day. The PS2 was still selling good when the DS exploded, its pretty much equivalent to the DS and PSP in terms of competition to the 3DS. The 3DS also has better hardware, which means it'll be supported by games for even longer. The first few months of the DS was also pretty slow, 3DS looks like its going to launch with guns ablazing.

By all that I've read so far, Wii Party seems to be a good alternative to MP, though obviously without the Mario trappings. I wouldn't rule out a new Mario Party, though, but perhaps not until next-gen.

I guess it's time we start talking seriously about 3DS since it's less than 4 months away.

3rd parties had nothing to do with the success of DS, the system took off literally only with the power of Nintendo. That 3DS has huge (Japanese) third party support from day 1 it's a very big plus but Nintendo's output is again the one that will determine how big success it will be.

DS brought touch screen, 3DS brings 3D. I don't see the introduction of 3D in handhelds such a big innovation as the introduction of stylus.

The genre that made DS a phenomenon: Brain Training
It's dead. It was the one that pushed people who never had dealed with video games before to buy a DS. That market has shrinked so much that is almost non existant.
(Where's Brain Age 3DS?). How will Nintendo convince these people now to enter 3DS gaming?

3DS will start stronger than DS but as Wii has shown that alone is not enough. Months 2-4 were slow for DS (those were the months PSP had some good sales) but after then it never looked back. Gamecube was dead, PSP was a non factor and the only real competitor was PS2 which was slowing down year by year. Competition became strong for DS only after the introduction of PSP slim.
3DS has DS, PSP, Wii and PS3 to face.

Conclusion: 3DS will be huge but matching the success of DS will be very, very hard.

I was going to mention the explosion of the casual games, but don't you think the effects of Brain Training (as well as a bevy of other casual games) has already done its job to convince people to buy the 3DS? The market who bought Brain Training hasn't disappeared, they moved on to different games. How else do you explain the massive increase in sales for games like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart? Not to mention, we haven't seen BT3 to really test this theory. They could have also moved on to the Wii also, we've seen how fast the Japanese market can react to new hardware. Who else bought all the Wii sports and Wii plays?

The Wii's slowdown is the exact reason why third parties do matter, is it just coincidental that the Wii started to slow down when new software slowed down? Its the exact opposite of the DS, where third parties started to carry it. The PS3 started over taking the Wii when the Slim launched and leading up to Final Fantasy 13 and continued to have major third party releases from then on, and as a result the PS3 numbers has never turned back. PS3 is the perfect machine to show third support do matter and to a lesser extent the PSP, without third parties, what else do these machines have? Sony's first party? Scratch that, the PS2 is an even better example.

Of course I agree whether the 3DS takes off relies on Nintendo's output, no one would be stupid enough to deny that, I even questioned Nintendo's ability to pump out more hit casual software in the 3DS announcement thread, but I think you're under estimating what great hardware sales, first party support and third party support will achieve. The SNES achieved 17M in a time where the market was smaller, the 3DS will essentially be the SNES reincarnated.

tldr: So basically I believe Nintendo has most the work cut out for them already and it won't take as much to convince the casual gamers to buy the 3DS.

While it's presented in a more game-y way, I'd say the Layton series caries a pretty big chuck of that genre's market in all regions nowadays.
