a bunch of copyright, non-publicised data and passing it off as your own work.
Just an observation: raw data cannot be copyrighted, they are
just facts. I've read people arguing about it being "market
research" but no, market research is how the data is obtained
(you can, for example, patent the methodology by which you
do the market research). You can protect data by not disclosing
it and having people sign NDAs. You can copyright how you
present the data (say, a pie chart), but the phrase "console X
sold Y units in December" is not something that can be
copyrighted.

I understand GAF's position, I'm not criticizing it, but please,
people, understand that corporations should not control every
single piece of information ever released.

ioi was told about ten times from multiple mods that he is no longer allowed to bring up, promote or discuss his shitty website.

....And I had just convinced him to finally listen to us gaffers (w/ch took multiple e-mails, arguments, and fights)! He wants to put me in charge of parts of VGCharts so that way I can make changes to VGCharts - he's not the only one running it now...
So we gaffers need to be able to discuss these issues openly or he'll never change...

A ban won't make him listen it will only make him even more stubborn...!!!

I thought he can make other threads about it. But he shits up this thread. He got called out for a crappy lie within 5 minutes. Let him stay out.

how could he be even more stubborn? he's not coming back.

also if you start becoming ioi's proxy to discuss/promote/bring up vgcharts.org, the same will happen AND we'll censor the sites name in time, in all likelihood.

Ah well, I for one won't miss the vgcharts numbers discussion that killed so many M-C threads.

I think that's precisely what's done here actually. Not that I think ioi ever had the stuff in the first place.

Well, whats done is done. I'm not going to argue with you, as your a mod, and you'll do what you think is right to maintain balance here.

ALL I am saying is that he didnt bring it up, someone else did. Nothing more, nothing less.

Did you not at all pay attention to the whole reason the argument began in the first place? He posted data strongly similar to his site's work, citing CESA. He has never, ever, ever ever, ever posted "CESA data" in the past, but magically did just yesterday because it's banned to do you know what. It's pretty damn obvious what happened.

So I went back and read it all up. He should've been more self disciplined if he knew what was going to happen. I bet someone connivingly schemed for the repurcussions. Still harsh.:D

They are considered " facts" if they're obtained from common sources or public records. Because the reality that none of the numbers are 100% accurate.

Yeah I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet, it seems like other sites have been censored in the past for much less than what VGCharts has put these MC threads through.

I'm looking forward to cvxfreak and others bringing up his site again in the future even though he's banned now. <_<

Btw. is it really necessary to have fake hardware sales in the first post while we wait for the real deal? =P

I prefer the non-graphical way of showing the hardware sales over the graphic in the first posting.

Isn't this his second permaban?
Anyone remember why he was banned before when he was known as broshnat?

And what sort of bearing do you think that lack of accuracy has on whether the idea that the DS lite sold some crazy number of units in Japan during a given week can be copyrighted?

so... what will next week be like...

traditionally the january to march season is a weak Nintendo period while Sony sales are pretty good in Japan.. this trend however.. did not show this year... will it change (VF5 is around the corner) ?

personally im predicting

150 to 200k for DS
80k for Wii
50k for PSP
40k for PS3
30 to 40k for PS2
10k for Xbox360

I don't see VF5 selling more than 60k first week, and then dropping off the top ten after that. So there's my VF5 prediction.

Also I think your PS2 numbers are way too high. The PS2 marketshare is (finally) getting eaten by the Wii, DS and perhaps PSP.

I think it'll do just over 100k, then dissapear. Might push PS3 hardware a bit, but it'll still track behond Wii for the week.

I don't.

I think arguments and heated debates is all part of intellectual discussion. I mean its only an argument, no need for such drastic measures. Forums aren't exactly here for us to be all jolly, smugly, goody-two-shoes. A little drama adds to the enjoyment of opinion, something all individuals are allowed to have, still. And it adds to the hobby of gaming. Thats why we have Ntards, sonyboyz, and Xbots all communally sharing this forum along with the neutral users too, conversing, expressing opinions, conveying information, and generally socialising with people who appear to have a common interest.

It gets less fun for the regulars when the same arguments appear weekly.

Yes, keeping ioi and still having all those debates about ******** would certainly be more ridiculous/hilarious than it already was. =P

If I remember correctly he abandoned it and then asked to have it banned when I reminded him that he would be banned for having two accounts.

Is there any word in Japan as to how well Hotel Dusk is holding up? Considering it's been getting so much hype lately in the US, I wondered if it was perchance receiving equally strong word-of-mouth in Japan...

Everything I heard was "average at best"

Then they don't have to participate or look at them.

I don't see people (especially, oddly enough, regulars) getting banned for constantly arguing about how X360 was "doing bad" in terms of US NPD sales.

(As usual when doing comparisons with old data, I'm using Famitsu here.)

At this point I think we all know Wii is doing a hell of a lot better than GameCube in Japan. However, I'm making it my business to show the extent. I previously made a comparison with Wii to "Top-Heavy GCN", where I arranged GCN's weeks from greatest to least, thus giving the Wii the toughest possible early comparison with GameCube numbers... however, it remains ~3 weeks ahead of GCN's best, and unless Wii suddenly drops to PS3 numbers, it seems it will easily be pulling away. The below image shows from Wii launch to the end of 2007.
20070205wiithgcn.png

That being the case, I've devised an even tougher GCN-based comparison for Wii. Rather than rearrange the weeks from best to worst, I leave them where they are... but sum up the years. Wii's launch week of 2006-11-27 is pitted against the combined GCN weeks of 2001-11-26, 2002-11-25, 2003-11-24, 2004-11-29, 2005-11-28, and 2006-11-27; and so on. Wii is currently behind on the total for this chart, but should be making up ground weekly for most of the year. Can Wii outsell GCN totally by the time 52 weeks have passed? We'll see. The below image shows 52 weeks from Wii launch.

Hey square your charts are a little less eye-jarring this week.

In case I was unclear, your charts would be completely acceptable without the windows paint "effects." They make your chart hard to read. Distracting at best, horrendously bad taste in color choices at worst.

Read: neon blue, neon green, and neon red -- these should not be at the top of your list for a palette, and then putting them all with a black bg is disgusting. What little ol' excel puts out is fine. Leave the "visual improvements" for another day.

So which chart are you saying is less eye-jarring?
The top or bottum?

I realize I'm late to the party in the last few pages, but I'd like to submit this post for the "most ironic ever" award.

Square - just some constructive input, the dashed lines on the top graph helps make it hard to read. The data lines could be a little thicker to help them stand out as well.

I think a white back drop and the use of the colors Red, Blue, Black and Dark Green to represent datapoints/lines is ideal. The current choice in square's chart just makes my eyes hurt.

Noooo some of us are red/green colorblind! Don't make the green too dark.
