just facts. I've read people arguing about it being "market
research" but no, market research is how the data is obtained
(you can, for example, patent the methodology by which you
do the market research). You can protect data by not disclosing
it and having people sign NDAs. You can copyright how you
present the data (say, a pie chart), but the phrase "console X
sold Y units in December" is not something that can be
copyrighted.
I understand GAF's position, I'm not criticizing it, but please,
people, understand that corporations should not control every
single piece of information ever released.
