Maybe you could try getting some details about the western launch of Youkai Watch? I know he won't give full details to a random guy at an event, but anything would be appreciated. Even a "we'll make an announcement in a couple of weeks" would be cool.

Also: "what do you think Level-5 would be like today if Youkai Watch hadn't been successful"?

Seriously, hope you can at least get to see him from within 50 meters, let alone talk to him :p

Well, it'd be nice to know whether the company has serious plans in expanding in Western markets. So far there's only an office in NA doing localization for digital games.

Destiny and Bloodbrone ARE new IPs. The thing is, they are targeted towards an audience that knows and appreciate those software houses. Destiny was marketed as "the next game from Halo guys"; it also had a HUGE marketing push (they started advertising it as soon as they had announced it with mega-banners on YT). Bloodborne follows the DS series as the spiritual sequel, and those who liked the previous games from From Software knew this would have been the next thing. Therefore, technically they are new IPs, but they are also "safe" new IPs in my opinion. The publisher knew they would have been received the next games from well beloved developers.

A new IP does not have to be an "untested idea". What are you talking about. A new IP is an IP that didn't exist before. Period. Genre, etc. are irrelevant. Stop spouting nonsense.

Sales-wise, it is important to distinguish between a new IP that comes out of nowhere (e.g. Splatoon, Professor Layton) and a new IP that does have some pandering towards a specific audience because of, say, the name of the developer. In the Ninenties, Squaresoft could succeed with plenty of new IPs because there was the name attached to them, and the genre was popular. Mighty no.9 was one of the most successful KS campaigns because of Inafune and the clear connection with Mega Man. New IPs? Of cours, but let's not forget the background otherwise we should be surprised that The Last Of Us sold so well.

That's true, however it doesn't guarantee good sales or success. Look at Bayonetta (Kamiya), The Evil Within (Mikami), The Last Story (Sakaguchi) etc.

Ask him about if he's ever considered Ushiro for 3DS. Always seemed appropriate to me, but instead they brought it back as a novel or something?

Also ask if they have any plans for Wii U development outside of Wonderflick R whether that even still exists or not (I doubt it, but hey Layton 7 still exists shockingly). We know they're on a PS4 game so only fair to see if they're on a Wii U game also (again, specifically unrelated to Wonderflick R).

Those are my questions. :p Thanks. :)

Umm, that doesn't work.

Mario's generally by EAD, DK right now is by Retro, Kirby is by HAL, and Yoshi's mostly been by Artoon/Arzest recently (Good-Feel is doing Wooly World).

They're all Nintendo IPs, but Nintendo has a lot of variety in devs, even if most of their most well known IPs are platformers.

Souls, yeah, is by the same team. Japan Studio helped with Bloodbourne, but they're definitely all by the same team at From Software, hell isn't Hidetaka Miyazaki the director of all four games?

DK is made by Retro Studios, Mario 2D by EAD Kyoto, Mario 3D by EAD Tokyo, Kirby by HAL Laboratory and Yoshi by second party.

Yes, could you tell him that you have a friend who greatly admires him as a businessman and someone who built an independent developer into a major self-publishing powerhouse, but cannot forgive him for what he did to Gundam with AGE? :)

I know it might've been a bit of a tough chart this week with the slew of new releases from last week, but no showing from either version of Rodea? Kinda disappointing. I knew it was never going to sell gangbusters, but at least a few interested parties on the first week would've been nice. Wonder if it'll outsell Natural Doctrine.

Didn't a Terraformers 3DS game release this week too? Seems FuRyu can't catch a break lately with their anime-licenced games on either handheld.

Yeah, the IP was really missmanaged; LBX W on PSV did terribly though, and this was one of the factors that might have damaged the franchise. A PSP / 3DS release could have helped the IP to last a bit longer, since the fanbase was already willing to migrate over there (the second version of LBX sold aroun 180k on 3DS).

As for Ushiro, yeah, I would totally see the IP going on 3DS and selling well.

LBX W did sell terribly on Vita. There's no denying that. While I do agree that game should've been PSP/3DS, I don't agree that Vita put the franchise in anymore hurt than it was already in. Level-5's constant re-releases and confused platform messaging began well before that game came out. In fact, LBX W (which was then a PSP exclusive) and the first LBX 3DS port (the third release of the first game) were announced in the same issue of CoroCoro Comic.

I don't think LBX's performance is entirely relevant to what a revived Ushiro game could do. That's because I don't think a revived Ushiro would be targeting the same elementary school audience. Based on Yokai Watch already providing a ghoul RPG series for kids, as well as the novel's new art style, I expect Ushiro will aim older. In that case, PlayStation formats aren't a poor choice. Nor is it unreasonable to suggest a game announced for PSP gets revived on hardware of the same lineage.

Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne started development about the same time by different core teams, Miyazaki didn't direct DS2.

Wow, I'm surprised that Dengeki PlayStation is still selling well today. Also, Famitsu PSP+PS3 once existed but died some years ago.

Yeah, wasnt the Vita version released at the same time as the PSP version? While the 3DS versions were released after this? Doesnt seem that the Vita version had much effect one way or the other in that case.

LOL, after a year of "B team" crying I thought it was impossible to find someone that didn't knew that Miyazaki wasn't the director of DaS2.

There have been many issues with how L5 managed LBX. The problem was not the PSV version per se, but the fact that L5 didn't try to fully migrate the fanbase from PSP to 3DS; gamers had the first one on PSP, then an expansion on 3DS, then a sequel on PSP/PSV, then the expansion on 3DS... If it were first on PSP, expansion on 3DS and then the sequel on PSP/3DS, it would have been a lot better, and probably the IP would have not collapsed so much. The fact is, when LBX W was released, PSP wasn't hot anymore, and PSV was basically dead; when LBX W expansion came out on 3DS, the IP was already on decline. It was clear L5 wanted to migrate the series on PSV, but this strategy didn't work at all.

Also, 3DS has an older target; 3DS have best-selling games such as Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Bravely Default and Fire Emblem that are not entirely skewed towards a young crows as Yo-kai Watch. A cartoon-style horror adventure game might fit 3DS userbase well.

Uh, tell him thanks for all the Layton games I guess. I enjoyed pretty much every one I played, even down to certain hamfisted cutscenes.

I highly doubt that's true. As I said earlier, LBX Explosive Boost was announced for 3DS the same day that LBX W was announced. At that time LBX W was PSP exclusive. That's a firm indicator that the plan was to move to 3DS eventually. The Vita version of LBX W wasn't announced until a few weeks before Explosive Boost launched. It was given low priority, as evidenced by almost all of the media focusing on the PSP version. Heck, Sony's own PV for the game did that too. As someone who has played the Vita version, it's an incredibly bare bones port. The only difference between playing it and just loading up the PSP release is the resolution. No touch screen navigation was added, even for the menus. No support for the second analog stick either. It was like they took LBX Wpsp.iso and converted it to LBX Wpsv.img.

The truth is likely that Sony paid for LBX W on Vita. The platform's software lineup in fall 2012 was really, really terrible. It likely cost Level-5 little to port it over and I'm sure they were willing to take whatever incentives (probably marketing given the Sony PV above) they tossed their way.

LBX W release : October 2012
Vita release : December 2011

dead after 10 months...

and of course 3DS is the only safe place for the whole videogame industry, the only platform which can guarantee strong sales for every titles.
all publishers should move on it
