Well look at the number of titles each platform had.
PSP dominates the lower half of the top 1000 so it's not surprising it would average out fairly low. Not really a fair comparison.

Donny can you explain how the numbers for each title work?

044. [PS3] Minna no Golf 6 (SCEI) {11/22/2012} - 220,179 / NEW (100,862, 48.71% => 207,000)

The first part is the normal formatting with system, title, publisher, release date, annual sales, and LTD sales (or NEW for titles released in 2012). For the last part in the ()'s, the MC Top 1000 gives a first week number and a first week sell-through percentage. Therefore for this example, the first week sales were 100,862 copies with a 48.71% sell-through. Using those numbers, we can extrapolate the first week shipment total. So the first MC week for PS3 Minna no Golf 6 was 100,862 with a 48.71% sell-through meaning the first week's shipment was ~207,000 according to Media Create. It's handy when figuring out if a title is still working on its first week shipment or got subsequent shipments, by Media Create's extrapolations.

Third parties comparison.
And there's still someone questioning third parties' success on 3DS...

And why the hell a number of publishers still focus Vita games like Sega, Nippon Ichi, Gust, Falcom, Compile Heart, etc, yeah you can argue that fans from PSp might've jumped over.

But aside from Sega who finally announced Mirai 2 as their only 3DS game since the original last year (wut), the other publishers made either a forgettable 3DS game (NIS only one with that sticker game...) or none at all (Falcom, Gust, and CH).

I dare them to make a real effort on 3DS and see how that sells, I think they'd be surprised how much better it'd do on 3DS than Vita.

I just feel you have a vastly greater chance of success (or at least higher sales) on 3DS than Vita, and that list just cements those odds.

I know they all made some DS games and those didn't do as well as their PSP offerings, however, the PSP was a much more successful machine on all fronts alongside DS than Vita is with the 3DS. That's when their fans were certainly on one side.

But here it's no contest. And hell I'm not saying they should stop developing for Vita, but to actually make some solid 3DS games period to test the waters seriously.

Falcom sounded like they were having the right idea by seemingly announcing 3DS support a year back, but that never materialized...

BTW, there are a few Vita 3rd-party games missing from that list, as it seems to cover 100k+ games, Senran Kagura did over that IIRC... right? I'd be surprised if there really weren't any between those 2 at over 200k and those that just miss 100k.

Otaku crowds is still on Sony platforms it seems. Gust, Nippon Ichi, Compile Heart, Falcom's fanbase is mainly composed of otakus.

The list is as of the end of 2012 so it's not up to date. Anyway I don't know why you're taking particular issue about 3DS lacking support from developers/publishers that never really supported the DS all that much in the first place. There are many developers that are comfortable in their niche. The 3DS' big userbase is of no immediate benefit to them when they can instead focus their limited resources on their specific target audience on other platforms. I guess you have a point with Falcom since they made allusions to 3DS support, but it's hardly surprising to see that not materialise yet.

Atlus only release one game on Vita and it does better than anything they've released on 3DS, and their response is to abandon Vita and just release 3DS games? Makes sense.

At the very least I'd have thought it'd be sensible to at least go multiplat with their handheld releases until they had good reason not to.

I see your point, I just wouldn't mind seeing what they can do with proper effort on 3DS, is all. :p

And hey, if it works for them, then why not I guess?

Atlus only release one game on Vita and it does better than anything they've released on 3DS, and their response is to abandon Vita and just release 3DS games? Makes sense.

At the very least I'd have thought it'd be sensible to at least go multiplat with their handheld releases until they had good reason not to.

Persona 4 is like Atlus' most popular game, I mean it spawned a fighting game for crying out load! That likely had a lot to do with the game selling that much on Vita, and porting a PS2 game to Vita is easier than to 3DS.

Vita may never beat the 3DS in life time sales but if it gets quirky Japanese games like the PSP got I'll be extremely happy. Sony needs to release a bigger memory card.

Also because Gust did only portings on Vita outside the Ciel no Surge crap; Nippon Ichi did Disgaea (how weird) and a game no one bought. Falcom did portings as well.

Until now, it doesn't seem to have much in common with PSP honestly, neither big releases nor more specific experiments.

Going multiplatform will probably serve very little benefit for such niche titles. It's better to establish an audience on each console and stick with it. The 3DS support is not strange at all using the DS as precedence and same goes for Vita using PSP. I'm sure it'll get more Persona.

Perhaps, but it would still seem like a sensible idea to at least try releasing something else on there when there's clearly an interested customer base in your titles on that platform.

It's Persona, its most popular IP, against Shin Megami Tensei (not very popular nowadays), Etrian Odyssey (best selling game is on 3DS and the new one will likely outsell every other entry) and Devil Summoner, a porting of a 16 year old.

Atlus will also find a market in the US on 3DS. On Vita that would be quite more difficult.

Fixed.

Loli games are not going to sell 200k on the 3DS so they might as well stay on Vita.

Idol Neptune STAYS unbothered.

If these sales stay constant , I think we'll see some new games soon. Vita didn't really jump out the gate with big sales like the PSP did in the beginning.

PSP had way bigger software and hardware sales than Vita since the beginning. Just look at the launch line-ups, and compare DW, RR, MnG and Tales of.

Falcom has released one game on Vita, and it wasn't a port. If you don't know what you're talking about, maybe you shouldn't talk?

I'm not very informed about those games, I must admit, but I thought Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta was some kind of porting. Isn't it? Now I read something about it and it appears to be some kind of reboot. This doesn't change my point, so if you want to add something to the discussion, you're welcome :)

PS: I thought Falcom released those bomb HD collections on Vita as well but apparently I put too much trust in this software house, since they just released them on PS3, skipping Vita :)

Falcom had never really made Ys IV. The Vita game is the first time they made one. Their other Vita game is the new Kiseki entry, and that's multi-platform with PS3. One of Falcom's PSP games, Zero no Kiseki was licensed to a third party to release on Vita but didn't have direct involvement from the company as development was outsourced to Pyramid, and publishing done by Kadokawa. The latter is likely what Falcom planned for 3DS support.

Those games are all playable on PSVita due to PSP BC. As for them bombing, while they didn't sell a whole lot the company seemed pleased with the result of the first one.

Thanks for the clarification. Let's see what's the next project they will announce for Vita.

It sounded like Kadokawa and Pyramid were going to do more Evolution ports to Vita. I think it's kind of pointless but if they're making money who am I to say they should stop.

As for Falcom, easy guess would be an Ys title. I'd say either Ys VIII, or a remake of V.

I've been wondering if Falcom meant that "next term" they'd be STARTING 3DS support, not that they'd be releasing them?

Would certainly explain the lack of news on that end; they're not ready to be shown yet.

Namco Bandai really releases a tonne of stuff:

2012 - 150
2011 - 130
2010 - 114
2009 - 109
2008 - 78

That all retail? Wouldn't surprise me considering their mass load of licensed games line-up on 3DS as I mentioned earlier.

Seriously, they're popping up every week it seems.

Yeah, that's just their retail SKUs. They're not big in the console/handheld DD market (really, who is in Japan?) but they do a lot of mobile games too.

So GEIMIN's LTDs should be the latest we have for anything released in 2012 that hasn't legged its way onto the weekly MC in 2013. It should also be the latest for anything from 2011 that legged its way into 2012's charts.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Also, has anyone found Google Translate to screw up the numbers themselves? I'm not familiar with this number system.

I do not have much trouble reading the numbers, just ignore the "book" and "this", GT have problems traducing the Japanese counter.

Hmm, had a random thought on Wii U's Japanese third party support.

Could it be that disparity from the PS3's design is hurting the possibility of Japanese audience targeted third party titles.

I just noticed that old Kamen Rider game announcement thread - there seem to have been Kamen Rider games on the Wii, and they don't seem to have done appallingly? So is there a reason something like that isn't also on the Wii U?

Same with the new Sengoku Basara game?

IIRC, part of what Nintendo tried to do with the Wii U's design was allow ease of porting from the 360 - there was a leaked slide mentioning as such? But that doesn't really help with porting of titles that are leading on the PS3.

I think it's mainly that many Japanese publishers are set up to work on one SKU and a Wii U port, while not extremely expensive would require more hands that Japanese publishers do not want to pay for in the current climate. Japan seems very content to stay using smaller teams whenever possible and there actually are multiple middle tier publishers there because of handheld dominance. Everyone seems to be trying to cut costs wherever possible these days.

Impressions from some retailers for last week's software sales are the expected.

3DS>> everything else, PS3 second, Wii U dead.

Those Climax Heroes games were low budget cash-ins. The Wii games were just up-rezzed ports of the PSP games. Wii only had one exclusive game and that one was technically just an expansion. I'm confident in saying that the only reason Bamco ported the games to Wii was because they were low budget and Wii has the highest install base. Battride War not being for Wii U is probably because 1. it's most likely not a low budget game and 2. unlike the Wii, Wii U doesn't have the highest install base.

Capcom was probably also banking on Wii's install base for Sengoku Basara 3 as well. Of course, they smartened up and made an up-rezzed version for PS3.

As expected, 3DS really benefitted from Golden Week thanks to all the software launched previously. If Luigi can increase up to 60-70k it would be way closer to be a million seller.
