Well unless it's a super, super extremely successful long legged launch title, we're looking at what, maybe 1 million LTD in Japan? 1.5?

Hum... Good point. I guess I was thinking on the idea of it pulling in the fan base for more (in the long run) while also bringing fresh blood to the franchise with it being a big launch title with a lot of attention.

So Monster Hunter Stories is a 2016 game, but will launch during 2015 fiscal year.
That means probably March 2016.

This is pretty impressive actually, since SF5 also won't be launching until February/March.

We'll be going ~11-12 months between Capcom releasing a retail game they consider notable.

This usually works well for franchises that are new IPs or franchises that are smaller and looking to break out, but not so well for franchises that are already big.

Cross-gen does make that viable for existing larger franchises, but of course you can't take full advantage of the new hardware on even a launch game level, removing some of the luster.

The top 10 could have feasibly shipped 2.5 million. I included #11 to show the drop-off afterwards.

3dsmajorsellersyqutg.png

The entire Top 10 for 3DS is above 2 million. That's about it. The closest titles to compare for 2.5 million would be the Yokai Watch 2 expansion release and Monster Hunter 4G. Smash Bros, Mario Kart 7 and NSMB2 are all at ~2.3 million.

Thanks.
Hm, I don't see 2.5 million happening. I'll eat crow though if wrong.

Par on course for Mortal Kombat to overtake SF with its biggest launch in franhise history.

Based on Warner's statements, I think that already happened with Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat 9.

SF4 capped out at 3.3 million: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

Mortal Kombat 9 sold "closer to 4 million units than 3 million units": http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/...likely-outperformed-vanilla-street-fighter-4/

That statement was before the game sold an addition 850K+ on Steam: http://steamspy.com/app/237110

At this point we're looking at Mortal Kombat X potentially doubling Street Fighter V.

I was actually expecting something closer to 70k on Xenoblade X, so that's nice, and with the right legs could end up right where the first one was. Still not the best numbers, but again -- it was never destined to sell the best in Japan. I still have no idea what its western numbers will be, but it can't do any worse than being a Gamestop exclusive in America.

We get online sales at end of the month, right?

So what's Monster Hunter Stories anyway? They say it's a RPG, but what type? We've seen no gameplay, we don't know who's developing it, there's no strong indication of the demographic they're going after (the art style suggests a younger one though), etc.

Is it an action RPG which existing fans of MH gameplay would be interested in? Is it something more casual driven around a Pokemon type monster collection thing? Is it more a simulation thing for kids who enjoy stuff like Animal Crossing and Fantasy Life? For a 2.5 million seller which they expect to release in 8-10 months, we sure don't know much!

Maybe it's Treasure's next hit Capcom game, sharing the design of the previous one. >_>

Edit:

Looking at the website, there seem to have been no updates.

Damnit, why the hell I always have a "leftover" typo in my post >__>
They're already rapidly diversifying the brand though. There's the Monster Hunter RPG on 3DS, the Monster Hunter browser game, the Monster Hunter smartphone game, the Monster Hunter PC MMO for China, and the rumored Monster Hunter PS4/PC MMO for Japan.
When you put it that way, it looks assuring that MH5 wouldn't be on mobile platform. But still, anything could happened.
I think it sold as expected (or even more) in the Western market but not in Japan.
And if that's the case then I'm seeing the beginning of franchise fatigue.. (in Japan of course).
Of course people get fatigued when all they do for end game is pounding Rajang over and over again.
Capcom introduced many new monsters in MH4/G, but the endgame monsters doesn't changed much from your usual elder dragons, Rajang, and Jho. Fortunately the west have caught MH bug a bit, so that might even thing into balance.
As a cross-gen one?

I can't imagine they want to take a 2-3 million unit hit of an actual launch title.

If NX can crossplay with 3DS? Sure. If not, I don't think Capcom want to split their player base into two.

Do the re-releases and ports not count? SF4 collectively sold roughly 7.5 million. Could be 8 million because Ultra didn't make the list.

Do the re-releases and ports not count? SF4 collectively sold roughly 7.5 million.

I would consider those separate games with separate development costs.

Similarly I wouldn't group GTA IV and GTA IV: Stories From Liberty City (the bundle that groups the two standalone DLC expansions) together, as they're distinct games.

Or, to use another expansion example, I wouldn't group World of Warcraft and all its expansion packs together as one game and say it sold 50 million units or whatever.

It is probably going to cash on the Yo-kai Watch and Pokemon craze so likely the latter.

MK also had the Komplete Edition + the Vita release. Not sure if this is also counted since the Vita one did really well AFAIK.

Mrgrgr
MK also had the Komplete Edition + the Vita release. Not sure if this is also counted since the Vita one did really well AFAIK.

GOTY editions and straight ports I'd consider a little differently.

Like the late port of the original Street Fighter IV on PC should definitely count in its total.

A GOTY edition is also something that's a finished product and likely to sell to new customers only since the season pass is available for people who own the game.

Street Fighter V itself, if it follows the rumored business model, I'd be more likely to group into one product if there were multiple retail releases since everything would be character by character DLC on the same base game and additional retail packages would likely just be DLC bundle additions (and maybe not even reported as sales the same way on their platinum titles page).

Basically where I'd draw the line is something you're selling as a distinct retail product to the same customer base that's had a notable additional budget, much like a PC expansion pack.

Maybe we'll get details about MH Stories on May 31st, at the big MH event. If not, then it'll be TGS in September, I guess.

Honestly this is a lot better than I was expecting for DQX/Xeno X. Why are people disappointed with Xeno X's performance? Sure it was on a different console that's one thing, but this is the Wii U in Japan. Isn't it actually relatively decent that we could have a non-December week where two titles on Wii U sold over 80K? If Famitsu has similar #s, these two titles have both debuted higher than Hyrule Warriors in the same week.

It also looks like the Wii U audience for DQX is growing (probably transitioning from the Wii version)? I guess if DQX all-in-one Wii U sold 30K, that could be where these folks are coming from.

Also, are folks thinking the people buying Minecraft on Vita are new consumers or just people who already own Vitas? Basically I'm wondering whether the game is slowly getting a younger demographic to buy a Vita. Perhaps eventually we could have a game targeting that segment on Vita (although obviously the 3DS has that in spades).

These are Media Create numbers then. My solution was way too complicated to be true.

Puzzle & Dragons Mario - 180k
Dragon Quest X (Wii U) - 100k
Dragon Quest X (Wii) - 80k
Xenoblade X - 86k

Wii U - 23k

are 23k for WiiU a little disappointing considering there was the XCX bundle?

or in other way, around 15k is not so properly much for a bundle?

I was not in Jap during launch week so I don't know how it performed...

I was not in Jap during launch week so I don't know how it performed...

I don't see why people would be expecting much more. JRPG fans aren't going to rush to buy a WiiU.

23k would be about the same as the MK 8 launch

I thought there would have been a situaton similar to Vesperia on 360, the situation is pretty similar

also I didn't expect a bundle with less than 20k shipped (I presume it's sold out, didn't have time to check some shops)

Wii U sucks, it's dead, and a 86k game was able to replicate the similar bump that a 400k game had. Wii U's weekly sales were 7k average? It triplicated the performance this week, it did its best, imho.

Honestly this is a lot better than I was expecting for DQX/Xeno X. Why are people disappointed with Xeno X's performance?

Because a very ambitious JRPG doing 86k is inherently sad, some PS3 Atelier games had better first weeks. I mean, for whom is the statement "considering it's on Wii U" supposed to be a consolation. That one only works if you combine it with a specific developer: "Considering it's from Compile Heart, 40.000 units sold is pretty good!"

If you expect anything major from the Wii U then you're going to look like a fool.

I have to believe that Nintendo realizes Xenoblade X did pretty great by the standard their failed system has set. It sold better than the original did, with a much smaller install base, and had the same hardware boost as Mario Kart 8 did.

If Xenoblade Chronicles X does twice what the original did in the West, remember how bad the Western release was botched and the size of the Wii user base, they should be doing freakin cartwheels.

If Xenoblade did 86k on the PS3/4, then I'd think it was just sad.

In the second half of Golden week, games aimed for children get a boost (children's day is the 5th)

Style Savvy, Minecraft and other Nintendo games will probably increase in sales.
