Again, we've long since passed the point where that E3 2010 list can be considered relevant. If there is a Persona game for 3DS, and there may well be eventually, it won't have anything to do with whatever Atlus may have been considering for the platform two years ago.

I can guarantee you that people will be asking similar questions about a few of the titles on this E3's third-party Wii U list come 2014. Happens with just about every platform.

Mistakes are being made all the time, nothing surprising about that. Is it wrong that I said Atlus never formally announced the game? Is that not true? There's really nothing to argue about that. And Capcom would deny MH on the Vita immediately! oh wait...

I would tend to agree with you (also to defend what I spouted) but I don't remember having heared of a case in which a third-party company denies a game announcement made by a manufacturer. This leaves the question open. But it would only make sense that, at least, is true.

Just wandering out from lurking because I'm just curious -- has Atlus ever explained why Persona games have been on Sony platforms (and Windows I guess woooo?) and more traditional SMT games have more consistently found a home on Nintendo platforms? Is it just predilection or have there been arrangements (and I seem to have a very vague memory of some sort of arrangement but SLEEP DEPRIVATION)?

Traditional SMTs are a rare commodity nowadays, most were made for SNES (3 original ones, two ports). After that only two other were made, one for PS2. Persona was a new franchise on PS and the most successful RPG one so far for Atlus. After three on PS and PS2 maintaining market leadership it's no surprise the two further sequels went to the next PS as well.

All the SNES SMTs were remade for PS1 though (as well as for MD, PC-Engine, and others), I expect the same to happen to some Personas on 3DS at some point.

I thought Devil Summoner on Saturn was equally successful sales wise way back? I was always a little surprised Atlus never really attempted to transition to Dreamcast given their heavy Saturn support (Maken X was pretty half baked and Sega funded it iirc).

Bandai Namco "Dragon Ball" Titel still hasnt been announced either and surely wasnt in development at that time but since its expected and very likely to show up at some point on 3DS, Bamco had no problem letting Nintendo put it on there list.

I think there is a difference between a official release list published directly from nintendo and some pamphlet that got distributed at a small event.

This is true.
But it's also true that 3 out of 4 titles they had on that list are on 3DS: Etrian Odyssey IV (Etrian Odyssey); Devil Survivor: Overclocked (Devil Survivor); Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Shin Megami Tensei). The only one that still lacks is Persona, and I can totally see something from such brand on 3DS.

I don't know, maybe. At the very least, it's the reason why I don't care a lot about all the SMT-related releases and announcements lately.

I doesnt look like that at all - P4 The Golden is probably the most wanted Vita title right now and will sell better because its a Remake of a modern Persona title on a plattform where customers are hungry.

I would be shocked if P4 underperforms.

After playing Dragon's Dogma for quite a bit I don't see it becoming any kind of sleeper hit; and it certainly wont hit a million units sold or whatever that Capcom guy was dreaming of.
I like the game despite it's issues, but I don't think it'll get any kind of "flawed gem" cult following. It's just a good game that could have been better and it doesn't have any apparent elements that could really catch on with the mass market and give it considerable legs.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it makes me wonder why Capcom decided that this kind of game should become their most expensive project ever.

Maken X on DC is I think comparable to YukeYuke Trouble Makers and Wonder Project J2 on N64. Enix also tried to support their previous friendly hardware maker with minor titles but never published anything big as the N64 didn't deliver on the promise of becoming the next big thing.

Dreamcast never even had that outlook. All the other RPGs were on PS by that point.

Actually with IS and EP Persona's sales declined even though they changed the gameplay further to appeal to an even broader JRPG audience.

The sequel to Devil Summoner came to PS2, very late though. Persona also took a break, after they returned to SMT with Nocturne on PS2. I guess nothing ever lived up to the early CD age games for Atlus.

The anime version of P4 finished recently and was quite popular, I imagine there were quite a few people who watched that and never played the original game. Sony should really be targeting those sort of people with ads on anime blogs etc. I too will be a bit surprised if P4 Vita underperforms.

The anime might have finished airing on TV, but the Blu-rays and DVDs are still being released. They're selling really well, and the final volumes are coming with special director's cut versions of episodes as well as a new "true ending" final episode exclusive to the home video release.

While P4G is coming out in June, the BD/DVD release of P4A will continue its monthly release all the way to the end of August, which is the same month the P4 fighting game is out. Atlus and Sony definitely planned this entire campaign very carefully with regards to P4, which is another reason why I made the point that I feel that old school Persona has basically fallen out of favor completely since it's so different from the big mainstream push which is modern Persona today.

yeh i was including the BD sales in the "quite popular" bit
and i'd definitely count myself as part of the crowd that loved P3 and P4 but have no interest in revisiting the earlier games, partly because PS1 games are kind of hard to go back to and partly cos my PSP1000 nub is screwed, ugh what a terrible piece of design that was.

What exactly did they do? I'm planning on picking up IS since we never got it before but I don't want more dumbed down nonsense.

The anime might have finished airing on TV, but the Blu-rays and DVDs are still being released. They're selling really well, and the final volumes are coming with special director's cut versions of episodes as well as a new "true ending" final episode exclusive to the home video release.

While P4G is coming out in June, the BD/DVD release of P4A will continue its monthly release all the way to the end of August, which is the same month the P4 fighting game is out. Atlus and Sony definitely planned this entire campaign very carefully with regards to P4, which is another reason why I made the point that I feel that old school Persona has basically fallen out of favor completely since it's so different from the big mainstream push which is modern Persona today.

I don't completely agree with this. "True ending on DVD," or the "anone" sales method (&#12354;&#12398;&#12397;&#21830;&#27861; coined after Kashimashi pulled it off years ago) isn't exactly welcomed with open arms. Diehard fans that buy discs won't mind, but in general the labels are pressured to air the episodes prior to release of the DVD/BD for those that do not. This is a way of boosting DVD/BD sales, not mindshare in the series that will lead to increased game sales.

For maximum effect from the anime series P4G should have been out 2 months ago, while the series was airing. Would not be surprised if this 3month gap between the TV series and the game is pushing people to go buy the original PS2 game instead.

The exact opposite of Dynasty Warriors Vs. , Samurai Warriors 3Z Special and many other PSP releases. In fact, the multiplayer based Musou released in April at first reached as highest peak in preorders positions between 200 and 250. Maybe, giving people content do the trick?

I really wonder just how "done" Vita is in Japan, and what that means for the rest of the world

I mean, if Sony somehow salvages the Vita software situation to a degree where games get announced a year or two from now, does the Vita have a chance of carving out a solid market even if its small, and getting some decently charting software like the Gamecube was able to?

I think the 3DS has a chance of becoming one of the greatest software environments ever, and I hope this happens. Indicators like this may not mean much now, but I hope this game does well unlike Vs. which seems like it underperformed

I would be shocked if P4 underperforms.

What is underperforming for that title though? When it releases Vita will be lucky to have sold 630,000 units total. I would consider anything under 150,000 to be underperforming so they need to sell to ~25% of the install base just to break that which seems like a very difficult task.

Mario Tennis Open will probably have a soft first week with a low sell-through since Nintendo usually ships a lot of units for these kind of releases. Anyway it shouldn't have any trouble outselling Mario Tennis GB, the Nintendo 64 title is out of its reach.
