Also I think if we ever needed confirmation that the old Wii/DS casual audience has entirely left to mobile, that Wii Sports Club performance has got to be up there with the Brain Age 3DS debut in the US.

What I found astonishing is that the casual crowd moved to mobiles like a single block in very short time. One would have expected instead a more gradual transition - it didn't happen and this was almost impossible to predict.

It is worth to note anyway that the same audience is not bound to any particular device and will hardly ever be. Considering how fast moving is this market and relative customers, I don't think that they will necessarily hang on smartphones forever. Of course I'm not implying that they will return to handheld gaming machines. I'm implying that the strong point being casual (lot of front profits) is also possibly its weakness (not loyal). As this was the problem for Nintendo during the transition DS to 3DS, Wii to Wii U, it could be the problem of Apple and Samsung one day.

Do we have a first week comparison to the other in the series for:

03./00. [PS3] Atelier Shallie: Alchemist of the Dusk Sea # <RPG> (Gust) {2014.07.17} (¥7.344) - 43.744 / NEW

Perhaps those games shouldn't have been made for retail at all...

Well I think that's related to the problem. You can get lots of /free/ fitness, brain training, and simple control sports minigames on your phone, so it's a hard sell.

Similarly, Mario Golf has had a harder time worldwide, and I feel the amount of golf games you can get on your phone ranging from free to $5 has a notable impact on that when trying to sell a retail game instead.

Tiger Woods has similarly seen its sales go way down since the more casual audience for that title doesn't exist anymore and it's mostly the really core sim fans.

Also I think if we ever needed confirmation that the old Wii/DS casual audience has entirely left to mobile, that Wii Sports Club performance has got to be up there with the Brain Age 3DS debut in the US.

The only thing that "confirms" is that no one wants a completely unhyped remake of Wii Sports that uses basically the same assets, just in HD and with MotionPlus. Kind of like how NSMBU's performance doesn't necessarily mean that 2D Mario fans have "moved on," just that NSMBU isn't an attractive 2D Mario.

Hopefully the SCEJ guys are happy with these numbers for Oreshika as I want to believe in more JRPG projects from them in the future. You know, that Wild ARMs 6... :V

And YW2 is just amazing. Can't not laugh at how this 2nd game pulls 1.6m in two weeks after the first one opened 50k or whatever it was.

In Japan I could say that's a fair assumption. Kids still do play games (I mean, look at YW2 sales!), but Brain Age/Wii Fit audience is.. at least not buying WiiU, in Japan.

I definitely think the kids market is still healthy with dedicated devices even if mobile is quite popular with kids.

They have tons of time and are growing up with games instead of just seeing them as a pass time after discovering them at the age of 30, so pitching a deeper experience is something I feel has appeal.

Like even on mobile you see tons of kids playing Minecraft, which can get quite deep for a mobile game.

Wow, Wii Sports Club is supper disappointing.

I wonder what would have happened if they had created a sequel to Resort instead.

Wow. That YTD compared to last year for 3DS looks horrible. (All numbers actually do other than PSV).

But NSMBU has an amazingly good performance. The attach rate is gigantic.

Similarly Mario Kart is doing great despite having a chance of being one of the worst performing games LTD wise simply because the system is heavily handicapped by installed base.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I'm not going to try and find my post since its embarrassing enough, but I'm pretty sure after the first weeks sales of YW I labelled it a disappointment and another Level 5 failure.

Whoops.

And the fact that each copy of YW is about $50 means that Level 5 is making some serious bank.

The most interesting thing to notice here is that there still exist a large amount of people willingly to pay a premium price (for a game) on a dedicated handheld system. Yokai Watch 2 is, among many other games of course, a good news for the traditional industry.

Oreshika 2's about in-line with the PSP game. It's higher, but within that range.
Dunno if that's a favorable point for SCEJ's expansion of RPGs or not though.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

Not sure if this counts digital (don't think it does) but I imagine a heavy dose of Wii Sports Club sales are digital seeing as how they preload it on your system.

I don't know if these are any numbers for how Wii Sports Club's been doing digitally, but I don't imagine it's very high. Partly because digital sales haven't been so huge in Japan (although larger for Sony systems), partly because there's no new sports in this game.

I'm not going to try and find my post since its embarrassing enough, but I'm pretty sure after the first weeks sales of YW I labelled it a disappointment and another Level 5 failure.

Whoops.

Are there a lot of games that revive from the dead like that? I vaguely recall one example, but the name doesn't come to mind.

SCEJ's output for Vita between Gravity Daze, Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars and Oreshka has been rather solid. Here's hoping they continue or at least do something for the PS4.

An improvement can only be encouraging? I mean they have a smaller userbase to work with at this juncture.

That audience is never going to be back in significant numbers.

They have found out that devices they carry everyday in their pockets have games for them so they are not going to drop 10-20k yens on dedicated hardware.

Samsung/Apple won't ever have that problem as they don't do generation transitions so older machines still play new games.

I see that the #beastmode is still activated. Good start for Oreshika as well. 180k LTD is possible and is a very good result for Sony. Freedom Wars is still going as well.

PS4...such a mess.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
This week is again time for digital sales. Can't wait for hiska-kun post with them :p

Youkai Watch 2 is actually cheaper than most 3rd party 3DS games in Japan.

Well, it's a late bundle retail release of a digital game, so does it really count? Not to say that I don't agree, but using Clubs to say that doesn't make that much sense. It would make more sense if it was a new retail Wii Sports sequel.

I don't think Wii Sports Club is comparable to Brain Age 3DS in terms of bombing. Brain Age was a brand new game with original content, Wii Sports Club is a pretty lazy HD port that offers nothing new and was available digitally beforehand. I mean, Wii U owners are better off buying a used copy of Wii Sports Resorts at this point.

Sure it bombed hard, but using it as a irrefutable proof of the casual market being gone (which is true mind you) isn't really apt here.

So, it's back to where it started this gen?

I used to love the original Wii Sports but i see no reason to play it again....

...and everytime i get free Wii Sports Club trials it seems the motion controls are worst than the original

In Wii Sports Club's defense, the inclusion of online multiplayer adds an exciting element to the game. 85% of my matches are lag-free and responsive. I've played 800+ online matches so far, looking to reach 1000 before the end of the year.

I really underestimated my prediction for YW2. Just 1.3M in the end of the month...Bah, just get to 2 million while ghost hunting is hot!

Fair enough.

Confirmation was probably too strong of a word. I'll go switch it to "more evidence".

Good lord that second week sales for YW2 O-O

I honestly thought it would sell 75-100k but 300k the second week is utterly impressive! I guess it will be around 2.5 million at the end of the year. I think It can sell roughly 150-200k in December alone! :O

Which was their highest selling DS game last gen?

I hope famitsu tracks the psp, 360, wii long enough till we single digits. When i first joined the forum and first gained knowledge of the thread, the xbox doing single digits was greatly amusing to me.

Damn, now that's consistency outside of the bump for Meruru.

Thank you!

Pretty good hold for Youkai Watch 2, it's so gonna reach 2m within the first months. Really insane. It's gonna double the sales of the 1st games within the first 2 months.

At this rate, 3m this year is definitely possible, with the holidays and all.

Yo-Kai Watch 2....damnnnnn! and there were software shortages too, no?

2 million imminent, 3 by the end of the year.

pretty high goal to get to 3 mil by end of this year. It would be under 20 weeks left for the year after YW2 reaches 2 mil. MH4 was released last September and it sold about 150K each in Nov and Dec last year. Even if YW2 would sell better in the same time frame, it's unlikely it would sell 500K in Sept and Oct.

Maybe first IE11?

I believe it was IE3. It was also L5's best selling game ever before YW2.
