Media Create Sales: Week 37, 2012 (Sep 10 - Sep 16)

I definitely feel this applies to at least Namco Bandai.

They're making 20 PSP games for example, but most of them are anime for somewhat younger audiences to my understanding.

For them, it makes more sense to target those games at people who could have already picked up the PSP for cheap than a more expensive new 3DS until the 3DS really takes over.

Yes, and one can also bet many games are in development for 3DS currently, say some of the studios decided recently to start titles or within the last 6 months, these games might not be ready to be shown or announced for a year or so from now

I am not a huge follower of Tekken titles; is Tekken TT2 considered a full on sequel to Tekken 6?

Not really, but it is the next main game in the series after 6 and its successor in that regard.

Kind of like a Dream Match, in King of Fighters terms.

Sorry I don't know that comparison either :p

Is it more like, a Monster Hunter title and a G version?

I suppose "next main game" is the important thing though. So how does the TT series differ from the regular numbered series?

I agree that Square Enix is the most interesting one since the answer to what is going on with their output could have multiple feasible answers, though I get the feeling we won't get a clear answer about that outside of just waiting and seeing what they announce over the next six or so months.

I'm fully expecting more Dragon Quest to come, but I'm most curious what happens to everyone who was making things like Kingdom Hearts 3D/BbS, Dissidia, The 3rd Birthday, Crisis Core, and Type-0, along with the people who made games that appeared on the DS like Crystal Chronicles and Tactics Advance last generation.
I think it is also easier to compare a generation that is over and done with than one that is still early on. For example, during the GCN era Nintendo fans were rightfully depressed about the flow and quality of games but then during the Wii era all of a sudden lots of people had fond memories of the GCN and were dissapointed with the Wii. However, by the end Wii and GCNs amount of games and quality were fairly similar.

While we look at S-E's support for DS we remember FF3, FF4, Revenant Wings, Crystal Chronicles, TWEWY, 4 Lights, Tactics Advance, 365/2 days, DQ ports, DQ spin offs, etc. However, their first major title didn't even hit until August 2006. At this point in 3DS life compared to DS it hadn't received any major SE support. I'm not saying it neccesarily will blossom like the DS but we also need a bit of perspective and need to remember we're barely a year and a half into the systems life. I also doubt 3DS will receive a lot of those smaller quirky titles.

Dream Matches are basically a main entry in a fighting game series that don't push the story forward, they are sort of a celebration and feature tons of characters from all over the timeline (regardless of if they were dead etc.). There's no story and no new characters are usually introduced.

TTT2 is exactly that, a humongous cast of almost every character that has appeared in the series thus far, complete with new animation and moves. The main differentiator between this line and the numbered games, as in the title (Tekken Tag Tournament), is controlling two characters as tag partners instead of just one during a match. Each character has a separate life bar and you can tag them in an out freely for combos etc.

I've just realized that week 38 tends to boost sales a little. I think the 23rd September is a special Holiday in Japan. Maybe somebody can confirm that.

No, just no. On 3DS, Atlus has been done more than nicely, and given sales results, I do think there's more in the pipeline.

Did you feel their PS2, DS, and PSP support was bad? o_O

Any given system (that they're actually supporting) if it wasn't clear.

I'm not comparing it to their support for the Wonderswan.

Also bear in mind that TTT1 was the best selling console entry in the franchise, and that was back in 2000. I wonder if TTT2 is more a victim of the declining console market in Japan rather than a decline in the franchise?

Note that 3DS is still in its first year and a half in the market. You cannot compare the entire Atlus line-up on PS2 and DS with the one of 3DS. For being in its infancy, 3DS already had a great Atlus support, which is likely to continue given the results.

I think the thing is publishers have a lot of things still to be released for the PSP. I don't see that system being relevant in 2013 so publishers will be forced to jump ship and the next logical progression is the 3DS.

The question really isn't how does this compare to other older platforms as much as it is, what other platforms besides 3DS is Atlus still supporting?

They have to be impressed with Golden sales but that doesn't show in any further game announcements. They seemed to be happy with Catherine sales but the same thing applies their to PS360.

Soul Hackers and EO IV did very well. SMT IV will do great and I'm sure support will continue, but its more a sign of the times than any knock on the 3DS that there haven't been more announcements.

I agree my wording wasn't ideal, but what I was trying to say is that, as one of their primary platforms, their output is up to par with what they usually do so they shouldn't be counted as a publisher who is declining generation over generation in support.

Did DS get anything as significant as SMT IV?

I guess it depends what bar we use to determine significant.

They did put on Strange Journey, Trauma Center, and the Etrian Odyssey series.

The graphics weren't PS2 level, but I mean, I feel that was more of a DS limitation than a limitation on Atlus' ambitions.

Ah, I wondered if that is what you were getting at.

Capcom has definitely changed then; their DS approach especially early on was quantity over quality when this gen it has gone quality first. This is likely due to them treating the 3DS as the PSP's successor.

The thing I was trying to say is that actually 3DS has a far better support from Atlus than DS and PSP in the same frametime. Not sure about PS2, though.
During the first two years, DS just got Trauma Center and Jinsei Game from Atlus (Etrian Odyssey came at the beginning of the third year, but it wasn't a big project by any means in the first place). From the launch to 2009, PSP got just Princess Crown from Atlus; then, it had that Persona porting, but that's after 3 years and the half in the market.

I think what we may be experiencing is a refocusing of the big third parties onto their biggest titles, while neglecting the middle ground titles that DS had so many of.

Basically what's happening in the West, then.

All right, I'll agree that their early 3DS efforts are notably better than their earlier handheld efforts.

I will leave the caveat that I don't feel the market had switched to handhelds as the primary platform at the time, and it made a bit more sense to me to compare it to a 1-2 year slice of the latter part of that generation, but sure, I'm willing to say if we do like to like timeframe this is an improvement.

This I agree on without any caveats. They're putting forth their absolute best efforts from both their DS and PSP franchises and doing it all early.

Atlus DS support wasn't that prevalent either though.
Just looking at it, they only had 4 games through 2008.
It picked up afterwards, but they've already got 3 games out on 3DS, and Shin Megami Tensei IV still coming.

Right, this isn't an uncommon trend.

EA went from 72 retail games and Boom Boom Rocket in ~2008 to 14 retail games and 50+ digital games in this fiscal year.

We do see Square Enix for example flooding iOS with titles, though not many of them are high profile.

All right, maybe the PSP is clouding my judgment here since I was thinking back on that and how it got like four games in 2011 alone from them and four in 2009 as well.

I'm surprised at just how far Sega retreated. They haven't even bothered trying a new Sonic game on 3DS or Wii U.

Early on, neither PSP or DS got much.
2009 and onwards was huge, but prior to that, there was almost nothing from them.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Another factor which should increase even more 3DS games in the future is the release of basically some of the last PS3 big guns. 2012 is the last year for PS3 filled with many great releases, just like 2011 has been the last very big PSP year, and this year we've seen a much smaller support for it( basically, anime tie-ins and novels, aside from just a very little number of good titles saleswise).

And this year we've already started seeing a shift from PSP to 3DS ( titles such as Soul Hackers, Toriko, Magi,...would have been PSP bound in the past). Next year basically there's just God Eater 2, literally. And 2013's PS3 will be basically pretty similar to 2012's PSP, and there will be the beginning of a kind of a shift towards 3DS ( not as big as the one between PSP and 3DS, due to some brands which won't come surely and Wii U being released), with probably brands like SRT and Tales of ( especially the first)...and Gundam too, I'd dare to say.

PSP's still got that new Omega Force game and Fate/Extra CCC next year as well.

Does anyone think that Dragon Quest 11 may go to GREE/iPhone? I'm already anticipating it tbh.

Social/platform games are one thing, but Dragon Quest 11? Do you really see iPhone owners spending 60 hours into lengthy rpgs and action/adventure games? They would cost more than $1.99 as well

Another factor for the lack of many games from third parties on 3DS may also be the abysmal sales it saw last year after the launch. Is it possible that some companies decided to not produce on 3DS in that period? Games greenlighted in 2011 Summer would have been announced in 2012...

Is the Vita selling at the same level as WonderSwan in the same time frame?

Here's the graph

WonderSwan did worse than Vita. But the handheld market was much smaller back then, and it was only competing against GBC.

In case you're wondering, WonderSwan Color did slightly worse than WonderSwan, and SwanCrystal did much worse. The GBA was released a few months after WSC and basically took back the market.

Which is shameful given how Sonic sold on Wii and DS.

I don't see how so. Sega said in interviews around the time S&ASRT was announced that it was their big Sonic game for 2012, and I take them at their word. When their next retail Sonic platformer is ready for release, there's no reason to think it won't be on 3DS and Wii U.

They don't have anything announced for 2013 at all. Their Wii support wasn't great but they at least had a Sonic Wildfire demo out there for it. Nothing on the 3DS front either, no port or anything.

To be fair the entire Wii U 2013 from anyone is completely unknown at this point. Well besides Bayonetta 2 and DQX U

Dunno how reliable are Famitsu estimates for WS.
In August 2000 Bandai reported 1.55M sold (and 1.7 shipped).
By March 2001 the total shipment reached 2.8 thanks to WSC introduction.
Overall WS(C/SC) total shipment was 3.32M.

Wasn't there a rumored Wii U exclusive Sonic game? Riffed on Generations or something.

They don't have anything announced for 2013 at all.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, in terms of Wii U, are we talking about Sega, or the industry as a whole?

That being said, I don't expect a Sonic game on Wii U apart from some half-arsed downport of a next gen title that'll still sell better on Wii U anyway.

Well, the launch window games are all through March, and then there's Injustice which I think is a bit later.

I had an honest question here.

Are we actually expecting Japanese PS3 support to fall off a cliff in 2013 and become basically non-existent in 2014?

Hmm intersting question. I honestly think so. I expect all of the big publishers to move quickly onto PS4/720. I expect people going for the middle of the road/less expensive route will either be on 3DS or Wii U. I honestly don't expect Versus on the PS3 at this point. Resident Evil 5, Tales of Xillia 2, and a few others will be the last big games on the PS3.

Not me. I expect to see a lot of Wii U/PS3 releases for 2013 and well into 2014.

Ah Wii U ports keeping the PS3 alive is certainly a possibility. On the other hand this depends on the level of Wii U support to begin with. And by support I probably interpreted the question wrong to mean 200k+ sellers.
