Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2014 (Jan 20 - Jan 26)

Prelude.

At this point, I'm wondering if the news about MGS: Ground Zeroes being less long than a Lord of the Rings movie (much less) will impact sales in Japan. In the sense, we're knowing this well before the release date, while (IIRC), the whole Jojo debacle got discovered just when the game launched, thus the sudden collapse in sales.

They know that. Konami/Kojima always said it was going to be a small introduction to the real deal.

Ground Zeroes has always been a paid demo (as Sandfox noted, you confused the names, MGSV: The Phantom Pain is the full game). It was never going to sell anywhere near as well as a mainline Metal Gear Solid game.

The last MGS demo sold 120k.

Of course. Never thought it would have sold on par with other main MGS titles, no way. But what I'm saying is that there could be a risk this title sells even lower than its (limited) possibilities due to the upcoming news.

Do you remember when FF XIII demo was released together with some movie ?
PS3 sales jumped by like 40-50k on that week.

God news for PS4 in Japan. MGS5 is next-gen exclusive (so basically PS4 exclusive)

Maybe 2015 will be the year of PS4 if FFXV and MGS5 get released.

EDIT

Or maybe not. Last gen versions have been re-confirmed.now

It depends on what people in general are expecting from the game. If they expected the demo to be like 8-10 hours, maybe it will have some effect on the sales, but if they expected it to be around 4-5 hours, i dont think it will affect it anything noticeably.

Speaking of this, i wonder what people expect (or was expected) from this demo/game. The price of the game is like 2500 yen on Amazon (in comparison to Metal Gear Solid 4 that was like 8000 yen). So to expect a game to last for 8-10 hours, thats the same length as some full priced games. But it is Metal Gear Solid, so maybe 4-5 hours is short in that regards (like if the main game is 30+ hours long or something?)? I dont know.

We're talking about Japan, right? I mean, I was talking about Japan. I'm expecting Smash to do (on WiiU) 3DWorld numbers, maybe a little more, if it releases in the second half of November.

I've never said it's going to sell 500k in the US in 2014.

Whoops, I didn't edit that properly. I think it could hit 500K in Japan this year and if it doesn't then the Wii U will have even more problems. 3D World hit 500K with basically no release near it. I'm sure folks that will pick up a Wii U in the holidays would likely pick up Mario Kart along with Smash if those games are out by then.

GZ is supposedly less than two hours long including however many cutscenes there are and made up of the stuff already shown in the trailers. I'm really curious to see how it does.

Yeah, but that should be for the main storyline only though, from what i read. There should be some side quests as well, so the total gameplay time should be more than 2 hours :) Luckily the game is pretty cheap compared to other console games.

PS2 is tracked, PS1 probably isn't, but maybe there are a few units from the past decade that should be added.

Anyway, would be great to see updated numbers, especially for the PS1 (and PS2)

Edit: I don't think there's a stop of tracking anyway, I believe Famitsu (and other market trackers) collect and save all the data, they probably just don't publish or extrapolate it anymore.

recently they published a chart with sales from year 2000 to nowadays and all PS2 and GC data were the same I had during japan-game charts times, so they didn't update anything, even if some titles still sell

Two hours including cutscene? A Metal Gear Solid game? That probably the new low for video game, separately sold the tutorial as a full game.

Its not being sold as a full game though. It seems to be short indeed, but we know that its just a prologue, and the price is significantly cheaper compared to other full priced console games in Japan. There is also some extra playability from the side missions.

Ground Zeroes is a paid demo. Why are people still confused? I thought folks in the Media Create thread are generally well informed!

It's pretty hard to tell how it will sell in Japan I think, because we know that the core fanbase for MGS is pretty consistent in Japan - about 700k strong at least. Will they spring for a paid demo? Maybe, maybe not. I think what's more interesting will be what the breakdown is between digital and retail sales, and PS3 and PS4 sales.

Gundam - 266,297
Diablo 3 - 38,431

3DS - 39,285
Wii U - 8,679
Vita - 21,061

Vita holding above the 20K watermark.
How long until Wii U dips below 5K again - when's the next release?

Yeah, at ¥2,500 it's easier to see it like that.

Toshin Toshi 3DS did 22,423.

Not sure if good or bad. Don't know it's sellthrough percentage (it did 40-50% first day).

It's on the site, the container with the single red bar indicates 80-100% sell-through.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
First Week:
Sengoku Basara 2 - 135,850 (PS2) [2006]
Sengoku Basara 3 - 242,698 (PS3) + 49,821 (Wii) [2010]

Sengoku Basara 4 - 176,313 (PS3) [2013]

Decliiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.

I just want to point out that SB4 is the first game in the (main) series to be available digitally. Might explain some of the decline. Of course SB4 didn't sell 70,000 copies digitally (maybe?), but still.
