I was afraid there was too many stuff already.

I was not even going to put AKB149 (mind plan was only things that probably sell over 200k), but I ended up including it so PSP and Vita could make their final holiday appearance.

Fair enough ;)

it will take time for sony to show a stronger, if there will be!!!, third party support for vita.
you can't have games developed in few months.
problem is that strong japanese developers seems to have settled their mind on 3ds: enix-eidos for dq put 3ds, capcom chose 3ds for mh4, atlus smt iv on 3ds....

sony cannot continue like that...bad word of mouth will spread and this is a bad presentation card for ps4...

Hmm, nearly all 3DS entries charted lower than they did in the previous week. I wonder if they will swing upward next week.

RISEN FROM MY GRAVE!!!

Anyways, yeah - basically it's the same in TK. There's still no playable demo units but a couple of info screens going up that are showing rolling footage and stacks of the Hajimemashite Super Wii booklets - this thing :

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/A7jXbw-CcAAPs3_.jpg

Has this "DVD > VHS" style page where the Wii shot is taken from the worst tv ever running composite

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/A7jb8CrCAAAeYF0.jpg

I'm not quite sure about the whole document + "Super Wii" thing - whilst it has resonance with the NES -> Super NES and does a good job of outlining what the machine is the screen shot above still feels a little bit of an own goal and there was maybe better ways to show the difference in IQ -and- show what the machine could do over the Wii.

I think that just shows how misguided New SMB WiiU's art design was. They should have gone for something very different from the previous games, to make the graphical differences obvious even if an a kind of misleading way. Maybe they could have tried something closer to Mario's design in Smash Bros Melee, attempted some kind of 3d unified foreground/background or soemthing else I haven't thought about...

Either way, they should have tried to make it stand out from its predecessors, making a new game and basically marketing it as "it's just like the old ones!" and expecting people to buy it for that is, well, stupid. Even if people couldn't get or care about the hardware upgrade, they'd obviously notice the new visual presentation of the game itself. However, rather than that, they went with the exact same thing as the last few games, but with busier backgrounds... Mario is big enough that this probably shouldn't be a "bomb", but I can't imagine this will push the Wii U as much as Nintendo wants...

But actively going after Vita's last piece of marketshare just isn't worth it.
I'm not so sure that is correct. Nintendo has experienced something with PSP last generation that can't be to their liking. They always had a quasi-monopoly over the handheld market from Game Boy up to GBA - and then all signs pointed towards this repeating with DS, because PSP sold a bit, but it was no match for the DS at all. At the end of the generation though, the tides turned and PSP became a major player in the sector and even presumingly was the market leader (by active user base) for some time. Nintendo could very well fear a repeat of this and have the intent to end this "looming thread" as soon as possible.

Considering their weakend position this gen on both console and handheld compared to last gen (Wii U has next to no chance to match Wii, Wii's mindshare has dramatically and way to early diminished, they face the real risk of falling back onto really small percentages of the market, like N64-low, while 3DS has no chance to match DS at all), they might very well try to secure this market that traditionally has kept them afloat and protect it from even small competitors, especially the only competitor that has ever dethroned them.

A year ago, or even a few months ago yes, but now the Vita is as dead as Nintendo could possibly have hoped it would be, with no signs of recovery in the near future. I'm not even sure what they could do kill it further; money-hat a 3DS exclusive Persona 5 and another Miku-game? There's already SMTIV on the way and it's not unlikely they'll get more more miku eventually. Or go after every small title possibly heading to vita to kill it completely?

Focusing on big mainstream games like AC, Tomodachi, DQ will do a lot more for the 3DS install base, even if it will do little to bring over the last few dedicated sony fans

It doesn't take much to turn the tide in favour of Vita.

I disagree. I think it would take an unprecedented surprise massive gaming shift/miracle to turn the tide in favor of the Vita.

but Sony has the power to revive the Vita, and put a major dent in 3DS's eventual LTD.

Nahh... I really dont think they do. Perhaps the combination of Capcom/Square Enix/Namco-Bandai/Konami/Atlus/Tecmo all launching a synchronized assault of exclusive top tier games from the best franchises of the region with no regard for ROI in exchange for the warm fuzzy feeling of reviving a near dead handheld could do it. But not Sony alone, not at this point.

What? It doesn't work that way. When there's no demand for the device, shops and resellers won't order more units or games. Their shelf space gets replaced by products that actually sell. Sony doesn't have to discontinue it, resellers will do it before.
If Xbox 360 hasnt been discontinued by all the stores yet, after nearly 7 years of quite low sales, i dont think it will happen to Vita. There will always be some stores that carries it.

Yes, but the post launch week sales will be extremely interesting assuming no stock issues. Vita collapsed in its 2nd week in the busiest shopping week of the year and continued into New Year.
There was a big drop in the 2nd week for the Vita indeed, but it wasnt until week 5 before we truly saw the lower Vita sales, that is why i think it will be the same with WiiU. It doesnt matter much if it goes much down from week 1 to week 2, but if the sales are even lower in around week 5-6 or so, then it might give a better indication of nearer future sales.

I disagree. I think it would take an unprecedented surprise massive gaming shift/miracle to turn the tide in favor of the Vita.

Actually, after a massive price-cut, in a year time or more Vita could grow to have a bigger userbase than now albeit niche compared to 3DS, say over 2 millions, that could make it a viable platform for a few strong IPs - Tales of, Metal gear, MH but only after MH4 releases on 3DS - so I think it's too early to put the last nail into Vita's coffin.

Besides, I gather Sony is making a profit out of Vita from the start thanks to proprietary memory cards, so I can see how from their perspective they may not want to ditch it.

Not saying Vita is a success of course, we all are aware sales are abysmal - in the first place I've been always convinced that Sony's biggest fault was to take the cutting-edge road at the wrong time whereas they should have launched something cheaper as the same price-tag as NDS/3DS - but in the next years to come it could find eventually its place as a niche handheld targetted at kotaku market, but only in Japan and not without a big support from third-parties(Konami, Atlus, Capcom).

It's the first to launch with a platform, but it's also the 4th variation of MH3 to release in the last 3+ years; this time without significant added content.

Should take out IE and replace it with Mystery dungeon. Its the first semi big Pokemon release for the 3DS, whereas we've already seen IE for the 3DS. Pokemon Rumble Blast shows the franchise can do good numbers on the system, so it'd be interesting to see the potential of other Pokemon games on the 3DS.

I kinda doubt it'd do 1.5M like previous entries but I wanna see whether it'll make it to 1M.

Oh and I need to comment on 3DS sales, AC is a friggin beast! I knew AC would do huge numbers but its also heloing 3DS sales in a major way. I previously thought AC alone wouldn't be enough to boost 3DS sales to a great degree during the holidays but I now think its enough to push 3DS sales to the levels of last year's end.

It is, as far as I'm aware. It features some content from Tri, but it isn't Tri, whereas Tri (Wii) and Tri G/Ultimate (3DS/Wii U) are all versions of the one game.
Yeah I thought MHP3rd differed greatly in terms of content? and not just in the number of monsters and areas etc etc.

I also think there's a chance Capcom will release MHP4th for Vita/MHP4th HD for PS4, and MH4 3DS/MH4 G Wii U. Gotta milk that cow.

I am not in Monster Hunter, but is MHP3rd (and MHP3rd HD) really the same as MH3? I always thought it's a different entry in the series.

And even i am moderately surprised
I am not in Monster Hunter, but is MHP3rd (and MHP3rd HD) really the same as MH3? I always thought it's a different entry in the series.

yes and no - there's a whole ton of repeat content to the extent i've frankly given up on MH3G and will resume at MH4 (also, both "team" members - wife, jonnyram - aren't going to play MH3G)

On a cold stone -from scratch- perspective i see it like : MH3G 3DS is the better game in terms of graphics, the 3D adds a perceivable Z buffer that aids gamers no end, however - it's a fucking bloat fest: waaaaaaaay too much text and it's still mired in it's console roots. Ultimately, 3rd is a lesser game but it's way more tailored to handhelds. As i moaned before - the "OOO - most talky NPCS EVER!" as a -feature- of MH4 makes me want to punch someone in the knickers.

I don't even think that matters. Psp managed what it did with developer support which the Vita has pretty none of, combined with, Vita's current weekly sales, I don't even think there's even a conscievable way for Nintendo to kill the Vita anymore in Japan. It's about as dead as a dodo. The only people that can really save the Vita would be Sony's first party support which Nintendo have no control over. They're in a Ps2 situation but Sony has a substiantially weeker first party support o Nintendo even back then.

Vita 2nd week thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457007

I didn't really remember how it was. It's worth a skim. (As any GAF thread older than 6 months, it's a graveyard.)

The only surprise here is that PSP still selling great despite not having a price drop in more than 2 years, having the successor on the market and being more expensive than the 3DS.

Sony should have dropped the price to 12999Y and shouldn't have bothered to release the Vita until they could price the Vita lower.

Meanwhile Vita is tanking hard and will be doing sub 10k soon.

Iirc you called this well before launch. It didn't hit me how badly fucked Sony was until after watching the second week drop.

I think I predicted 600k FW / >1M LTD at the end of the 2011 for the Vita. So crazy

Considering how strong yen is it puzzles me why Sony doesn't do price drop for Vita. Sure it still wouldn't sell anywhere near it should but maybe it would at least stabilize sales to over 10k and keep better retail presence for the device. Even Nintendo has set different price for 3DS in Japan because of strong yen (and for upcoming WiiU).

Maybe a bit bad wording from me when i said that the 2nd week doesnt mean much, but i was thinking mostly about the sub 20k numbers. We couldnt know for sure already in the 2nd week exactly where it would go. The 2nd week might give a smaller indication about if the sales will be high, decent or low, that is true, but it wont tell anything about exactly how high, decent or low the sales will be. Personally i will not say anything for certain before it has gone 5-6 weeks at least regarding the WiiU. I can speculate before this, but i will wait to see some more sales numbers before i say too much about it :)

Because Vita would sell maybe 50k the next week, with a big pricedrop, and then it would get below 10k in no time.

They are dropping the price outside of Japan this Christmas because CoD and AC can drive part of the sales, at least on paper. Meanwhile Vita has pretty much the worst first-holiday-after-launch line up in Japan ever.

Hate to be that guy, but "fixed". They're making a big play of the two titles, but it's still nowhere near certain they will drive the system at all.

EDIT:

Ah, I see your edit :)

Since I suspect more people will be interested in this for sales discussion than general discussion, I'll also post it here.

Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram

New game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Spring 2013.

According to siliconera

Rather than being told from the perspective of protagonist, Rintarou Okabe, Linear Bounded Phenogram will be told from the perspective of each of the Labomen. Naotaka Hayashi will be penning the game’s script once again, and will be joined by a slate of other writers, including Zero Escape series director, Kotaro Uchikoshi.

Should be interesting.

Just realized this year already has 3 games over 1 million, which is the same amount as 2011. Not sure if any other game will get there.

At least the 3 million sellers of 2012 are stronger than those of 2011:

2011

MK7 - 1.08m
SM3DL - 1.04m
MHP3rd - 1.02m

2012

B2W2 - 2.81m
NSMB2 - 1.38m
ACNL - 1.04m

...and counting.

It seems the trend of concentrating sales on the top titles continues, though.

And it could be the same way next year with the only million sellers being
MH4
DQ7remake
Pokemon Gen 6

Of course that would be a much bigger than year the previous two, but the lack of series that can actually reach a million anymore is kind of sad. And next year there is a huge possibility they are all on 3DS. The only wildcard I could see is continued sales of NSMBU making it one.

And even i am moderately surprised

Dude..come on. You honestly think Wii U is going to sell half of what Vita sold when it launched?

Edit- 58%, so a little more than half.

Man, Nintendo's going to have a pretty damned shoddy Christmas if DCharlie's predictions come to pass.

Nintendo confirmed for rising to heaven, then. :p

I think it's not fair to make such a comparison, as:

* 3DS userbase in 2012 is way bigger than 2011 one, let alone that B2W2 is a NDS game.
More so, the Trinity had an attach rate much bigger than say NSMB2, also thanks to December boost.
* IIRC MK7, Mario3DLand and MH3G released at the end of November, whereas both NSMB2 and B2W2 have been already around for a while.
