PSP sales are so low right now that we can have a rough estimate on how much is really Vita vs. PSP.

:lol, ahh man the sad realisation, that the psp is still outselling Vita's YTD in Japan it's strongest country. I wouldn't be so sure of your assumption.

I actually can't believe that, the psp' sales are mostly dead, the Vita had a price cut, a new model, and it still couldn't manage to beat it? How....

I am honestly kind of baffled Sony did not include the ability to use a Vita as a controller to make the Vita TV compatible with all games.

Maybe it would be a feature only a few people use but it would at least provide an avenue for full compatibility.

Well they also came up with the concept of turning a handheld into a console for the Japanese region and were confused when people were more excited about the concept in the West.

REALLY shocked (in a bad way) Toriko only managed 11k.

How did the PSP Toriko games which this is the sequel to do?

This is a really impressive looking MH-clone IMO, how did it not do close to One Piece's opening? Shipment is obviously lower but I would've thought at least the % would be higher, maybe the game was hard to find? But then why the small shipment?

The numbers of Toriko related products (anime tie in merchandising and such) have been basically in free fall for a while, so it's not surprising that its games are suffering from the same effect...

2013_2ndquarter_SalesTitles_zpse721dccf.png

Note how it got surpassed by Saint Seiya in domestic licensing, even though Saint Seiya's numbers are still lower than Toriko's previous numbers.

I get that. But according to Famitsu, WO3 Ultimate had around ~8,000 digital units sold across PS3 and PS Vita in the first week of sales. DW8XL had half the PSV sales and just over half the PS3 sales. So i know we don't have actual download figures for DW8XL but i'd doubt that they were more than 8,000.

So even 63k+8k= ~70k+ which is still quite disappointing compared to 7XL and other games when you consider it launched on two platforms as well.

So maybe the PS4 version is going to be the one?

I don't know if it translated into sales, but no need for disc swapping would be a big incentive for buying the digital version of 8XL. You're comparing it with a standalone game, which isn't really the same. To play the fully featured versions of the XL games using the traditional disc method, you'd need to insert XL, the original disc, and then XL again. The digital version eliminates all that.

In Japan sure, the west that ship has long sailed and it ain't coming back.

It managed to less (around half to be precise) in the same quarter last year worldwide despite having a price cut. Chances are things are gonna get worse for the Vita in the west not better.

Unless sales in Japan pick up tremendously, next years quarterly sales results ain't gonna be pretty.

May you direct me to these numbers?

Well there's also the fact that DW8 sold less initially than DW7. So there is less of an install base even if they rereleased the original game with XL this time.

But I imagine the PS4 version took some steam away from this version's sales as well.

Probably more the fact console gaming in the west is largely still going strong, whereas in Japan it's largely been taken over by handheld gaming.

Compare how the Vita (as terrible it's doing in Japan) with the PS3 in Japan and then do the same comparison in the west. This comparison itself ignores there's two active consoles in West in comparison to Japan but you see the point. Console gaming in Japan is nowhere near as popular as in the west. Granted due enthusiast Japan it'll definitely do well at the start even the Vita did. but it's ultimate test will come in the weeks afterword's.

If you are saying that handhelds are king in Japan .you are not wrong .but i think it is wrong to base that on the current sales numbers of Vita and PS3.
The PS3 is currently in its 8th year and has been selling between 10 -15k for the better part of a year . It has pretty much hit saturation at least on that price point .

A better comparison would be between PS4 out of its launch momentum versus the vita sales .

feel free to Correct me if i misunderstood you.

Also to be fair .there are technically 3 consoles in Japan active although one is completely irrelevant there and the other one is cratering.

GTA5 budget release would sell 300K? That would be pretty incredible.

I think the most shocking this is that considering how crappy the ps3 single titles sales are (being like 1 or titles actually selling over a million). It's already one of highest selling titles in the generation for Japan.

May you direct me to these numbers?

It's in Sony's Q2 quarterly's and the and the previous years Q2 sorry don't have time to search already using gaf to procrastinate in regards to work I should be doing.

Toriko always felt like one of the most incredibly manufactured/lab-created shows with the aim to be a "big shonen hit".

I didn't realize it at the time, but Sony is skipping the Holiday season in Japan by launching in Feb. I don't know what's up with that, if its just arrogance, or the new reality that the Japanese market is simply no longer a priority but that seems a bit weird.

If anything, it's just them being smart by not launching the PS4 in Japan so soon, because:

1.) Mobile & gaming handhelds are far more popular than home gaming consoles in Japan, &

2.) They don't have to worry about Microsoft making any impact there.

Focusing on other markets first (especially in the region in which you're the weakest in, being the U.S.) is a smart strategy.

Toriko always felt like one of the most incredibly manufactured/lab-created shows with the aim to be a "big shonen hit".

It doesn't help that Toei and Shueisha have been throwing money at it for years into trying to make it the next big shounen hit.

TBF most of manga's that run in Shounn Jump are, difference was Toriko got pushed like hell because the other popular shounen franchise are either ending soon (Naruto) or their popularity has fallen off a cliff (Bleach). Jump really, really wanted someone to replace them, but Toriko, completely lacks popularity with the female readership. Which any mainstream shounen really needs as the split between the 2 genders for most popular Shounens around 50/50.

That and there's not that much unique about it.

Stuff like soma is more popular anyway, but trying to make a videogame out of a cooking manga might be a bit difficult.

Soma's kind of an anomaly there's like been a good thousand similar types of manga (not necessarily about cooking) that have lasted all of 20 chapters in Jump. It's kinda like Nisekoi, I can't see one defining difference between it and the hundred other rom com manga's in Jump that were cancelled pretty sharphish and yet it keeps on trucking. Though Soma at least has a decent artist and the plotline and flow isn't that cliché.

Goddammit!
Already have my Vita TV, just need that North American account system and store up ; ;
Chance it won't happen now?

I'm hoping for an NA release too

All they need in the US is two SKUs

$150 SKU with DS4, 8GB Memory Card and digital copy of Minecraft (Which preferably would crossplay with the PS4 and Split Screen Compatitability would be nice)

$99 SKU with nothing but a TV-type remote advertised as a "Netflix/Hulu" Box.

Maybe a third SKU where it's bundled with the PS4

I think this would definitely see some modest success. The cheapest way to play Minecraft on the TV would be an attractive proposition for a lot of parents and at least shooting for some of the Apple TV/Roku market would also help.

On another note, I'm actually quite surprised Sony hasn't attempted a "Pokemon Clone" of their own yet for the Vita. If well marketed and made, I reckon such a thing could be a reasonable hit.

Well maybe not a million but something like 900k. And obviously across many years. Still impressive. Some re-releases have sold rather well and it looks like that even normal edition of GTA has good legs.

Maybe I'm overstating how important holiday season is to the Japanese market, but Sony is seemly willing to skip one just to launch in everywhere but Japan. That seems a bit arrogant to me. We're talking about the rest of Asia getting the PS4 before Japan does. It's the right business decision, but if I'm a Japanese consumer, I'd be mad at that decision...

If that's the case, then Japanese gamers should blame themselves for giving more love towards mobile/tablet/handheld gaming while mostly ignoring console gaming, not towards either Nintendo or Sony. It's their fault.

Maybe if they were to start putting more effort into caring about console gaming, then they wouldn't be in this situation & PS4 would've been released before Christmas in Japan this year.

Soma works because of the fantastic art, quick pacing(It avoids the battles have to take 20-25 chapters, with 15-20 chapters of nothing happening) and little romance drama. It focuses on what's important, showcasing the food and the techniques people use to make it. Its also legitimately funny.

Actually, no, it's not.

A comparison to other games is not even needed if you follow these threads. On top of that, the day one shipment will last for at least another two weeks.

Only redeeming quality is that it's one of the few PSP/Vita titles that can see holiday bumps, so it will likely see a rise (not a Nintendo level bump by any means, but still something) in the upcoming weeks.

Can't ignore it when this last generation paled in comparison to to previous generations of actually providing good and interesting games.

Sony really shot themselves in the foot with the PS3. Yes, they still have a sizable market share in Japan, but the CELL architecture pretty much drove out all the small players out.

It's already the best selling Vita game isn't it? I think it's the PSP version's sales that's much more disappointing. Though they've shipped 600k already so it has done quite well IMO.

Forgot about Taiko this week, damn that's one harsh drop considering where it was in debut week. Not a good sign for the holidays. Maybe they should have made a 3DS game instead, yeesh.

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Contrary to popular belief, I think that because of the Vita being a hybrid device it still has a shot at some recovery. Bottom-line, gaming will always be limited on cells not because of the lack of buttons, but battery life. It's just too inconvenient to have full fledge games on a phone with it's battery life. Sure you can play games on the phone, but you would need to dedicated to it. So no phone calls, internet, or texting. Which brings me to my next point:

Handhelds still have their markets but IMHO lack compelling software. It's just not worth the admission. What needs to happen is groundbreaking ways to play games on the hardware with compelling software. RP is an awesome start as it really gives value to the hardware. So the future of handhelds are tablet-like devices that does more than play games. No longer can traditional handhelds be dedicated gaming devices. These devices need to connect to social medias, be connected to each other, and do things that can't be done anywhere else. As long they do that, handhelds will remain relevant.

Nice to see the Wii U getting a bump. Too bad there isn't any compelling software coming till like February/March to keep it going.

lol, yes. Blame the customers that they weren't interested in the companies' product, not the companies themselves. That's exactly what Sony and Nintendo need to do.

I agree with you. But even then looking at Japanese digital dowload sales for PS3 and PS Vita and taking the maximum percentage it still doesn't look like DD will do much.

Agreed again, DW7 sold through around 480,000 and DW8 shipped 400,000.

Considering the sales of GE and Burst I'd say its the psp version that's disappointing. Though I don't know what the split was for psp/vita on the first shipment.

Precisely when is xbox launching in Japan and PS4, I'm expecting if it does well that it'd hang around 20-30k if not a fair bit lower.

Nintendo helped provided marketing help, and servers I think.
That might be. I'm still curious what he ment with "wanting more money" though. When Monster Hunter 4 developement started, neither the 3DS or Vita was on the market, so it was just a gamble on which system that would be the most attractive system.

Nope. Please don't kid yourself. It's been on the market for almost two years. Support is still lacklustre at best. Sony seems content with turning it into a PS4 accessory.

It's done. That's it. I'm sorry if that upsets you or anyone else, but it's fact. Don't worry, though, it won't be alone, since I suspect Wii U joins it after Mario Kart and Smash launch. Both will enjoy niche status, with some minor hits, and that's more or less it.
I think its fair to say that the WiiU has already joined the Vita a while ago.

It's in Sony's Q2 quarterly's and the and the previous years Q2 sorry don't have time to search already using gaf to procrastinate in regards to work I should be doing.

On their own merits it would've been clear to anyone ahead of time that 3DS was going to be a much bigger system than Vita. For big games like MH userbase matters.
