Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2013 (Dec 16 - Dec 22)

The thing is, without third party support and the lack of lightning in a bottle, what is the point of another Nintendo home console to pump out more of the same Nintendo first party titles? It seems that with each generation (bar the crazy success of the Wii, but there were clearly many other factors there), the core Nintendo crowd has been falling off. The people that buy the Marios, the Karts, the Smash Bros etc. Nintendo can only milk these cows for so long, clearly shown by what's going on with Wii U. I agree that the portable market is a different kettle of fish, but I don't think another home console with the same tried and tested NSMB, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros etc. will do much better than Wii U to be honest. Even if it comes in at $250. The Nintendo hardcore, what few of them remain, will buy the console and the games for sure...but that market is now so small I wonder if it's even worth going after. Nintendo has done so much, it seems, to push these people away that they've backed themselves into a corner. I'm not saying it's impossible for Nintendo to come out of this with a success, because only a fool would totally count Nintendo out, I just think it's extremely difficult for them to make a comeback in the home console space any time in the next 3-6 years.

You know I actually agree somewhat with this. I've been thinking about it, and launching a new console in 2016 seems like Nintendo would hit the same problems and they would be right in the middle of the PS4/One gen and everyone will have made their choice. In my opinion, they should just take a break from home consoles for a little while. They should just wait until this generation starts to wind down instead of jumping in the middle. In the meantime, they can focus a lot more on the 4DS and have a substantial lineup ready at launch and in the first year. They can also work to improve their relations with western 3rd parties. Launching a new console in 2016 with a new handheld in the same 1 year vicinity seems like it would be a complete cluster and both would suffer tremendously.

Edit: Also I'm somewhat curious, what are people's expectations for DK?

Seeing P&D Z doing so well makes me hope it'll be released outside of Japan quickly.

edit: first 4 weeks of 2013

67.083
20.715
16.654
13.746

2014 will be close
Yeah, that is about what I'm expecting too.

Well let's see they have

DK
Mario Kart
Bayonetta 2
X
Yoshi's Land
Zelda Musou
Smash
Fire Emblem x SMT

I think all of these make it out next year barring Fire Emblem. Now Nintendo better have something else because that's only 5 games that could even sell over 200k. I mean if they're desperate they could always have a NSMBU2 out by next year. Personally, I hope there is some more experimental stuff and lesser known IPs not related to the Mario Universe.

They will Show Zelda U and Mario Galaxy 3 by E3 but these are not 2014 titles I just hope they have something major for fall 2014

but all I really care about right now is that X is a great solid and polished game when it comes out

with no 3rd Party support Wii U is just limping for the next few years

I just don't see how they are going to save it. I am not expecting the Wii U to sell above 30k weekly in Jan2014 in Japan

Holidays are magical for Nintendo so hopefully they are squeezing a few more sales this week

Products like The Last Story, Wonderful 101, and Zangeki no Reginleiv would have been good ways for Nintendo to expand and satisfy their hardcore audience on console. The problem is that they didn't really have that audience when these games came out because of the lack of core-oriented third party titles on the Wii and the lack of audience period on the Wii U. Only Nintendo's new casual IPs succeeded, and the rise of smartphones killed those off.

I don't think the third party is one that Nintendo can continue to ignore. They have almost no way to gain ground without working on that.

Since we're on the topic of Wii U survival/comeback, I guess my opinion would be that chasing the Wii U is the right short term decision, but the wrong long term decision.

In the short term it's definitely the platform they can release software for the fastest, already has at least some install base, and keeps NIntendo in the console conversation on at least some level. Not dumping it immediately also ensures that Wii U owners don't feel abandoned.

In the long term however, it puts Nintendo in a situation where they're unlikely to ever exceed the GameCube's LTD, if they even make it that far, and has them as the third wheel in the dedicated console conversation. Now, is it impossible to come back from brand perception/awareness damage like that? No, as the Wii has shown, but I do think it's notably harder now given that 2 or 3 mega-billion dollar platform vendors (Apple, Google, and if you want to count them separately, Amazon) have entered the market.

There's probably a decent middle ground somewhere between the two. Perhaps releasing their full 2014 line-up, and then starting to wind down in 2015 with releasing things like Yarn Yoshi and Zelda to keep fans happy while allowing them to transition to a system designed entirely around delivering first party Nintendo games as cheaply as possible without compromising quality, presumably out sometime in 2016. Microsoft managed to relaunch the Xbox brand into a huge success after a four year cycle without alienating their base, so it at least has a use case of success.

I think they would be beyond stupid to kill the system really early, if the worst comes to the worst and the really poor sales continue into 2015 they can treat it as a short term console to become familiar with HD development and then release a new system in Nov 2016 which wouldn't burn WiiU owners too bad as it will have still had a four year lifespan and Nintendo don't tend to support their consoles beyond four years anyway.

The real issues start when you try and work out what is best for their future, if they exceed PS4 / Xbone specs by a full generational leap then their next system will be extremely expensive at launch and we have seen how a $350 Nintendo system sells. If they again go for a low tech USP console they risk exactly the same thing happening again that happened with WiiU (the mass market not biting and being left with 5 million hardcore Nintendo fans as their audience).

Personally I think just matching PS4's spec, begging third parties for support (paying for ports if needs be) and trying to get the system out at $249 would be the best bet. They absolutely need to launch with two of their exclusive big hitters with a steady stream of exclusives for the first year to keep sales momentum going. There is absolutely no point releasing another system which suffers a software drought in it's important first year. Name wise it should be called something completely new rather than Wii something.

I don't think the third party is one that Nintendo can continue to ignore. They have almost no way to gain ground without working on that.
Agreed. However, I don't think it's something Nintendo's ignoring. The company clearly knows it's well and truly fucked when it comes to third parties and the home console space. If I was EA or any other major third party right now, I wouldn't touch Wii U with a barge pole or even with a significant investment from Nintendo itself. The only software selling is Nintendo software, and even then, the software isn't doing too hot. I've also got the feeling that a lot of early adopters have abandoned the console and aren't bothering to buy any more software for it due to the drought.

Personally, what I'd like to see from Nintendo as a Nintendo fan that has yet to buy the console is the following:

- Region free gaming. Get off your fucking high horse, Nintendo, and step in the direction the rest of the market is going.

- A digital account system like Microsoft/Sony/Apple/Google Play/Amazon and countless others. I have bought so many of your games, paid for some numerous times. Please have the courtesy to let me play my NES (for example) VC games on other VC capable systems.

The above won't save Nintendo. It'll be a goodwill gesture to the core Nintendo fans that have supported them through thick and thin. I'm in danger of falling off the Nintendo bandwagon, and I suspect many others are too (the ones that haven't clearly fallen off already)...so do something to keep us. Otherwise you will have nothing left bar the crazies. The home console market is a lost cause and the dedicated portable market is getting smaller and smaller.

Zelda U is a particularly tough case, I think. It might well be the most expensive project in EAD's history; at what point do realistic sales projections for it get so low that it makes more sense to rework it for (an)other platform(s)?

If Zelda U uses the same art style as the tech demo and they don't cheap out I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first $100 million Nintendo game.

I think Nintendo shouldn't bother with another home console until they can guarantee decent 3rd party support and ensure they don't bail when the numbers suck. Honestly tho Nintendo's stuck. They got an image already and they can blow a trillion dollars into the "cinematic press A to awesome come walk with me for 5 minutes with shitty exposition" game market, don't think that's gonna make a difference. Nintendo can pull a Sony move and pump out only new, "mature", incredibly high quality IPs for iunno 10 years, I don't see the 18-35 year olds eating that up even then.

If they make a product and win that audience back they will pick up those type of games.

The funny thing about this week's sales is every hardware is down compared to this time last year except Vita. That speaks more to Vita's poor 2012 holiday sales than anything else, though.

Wii U Christmas bump is pretty big this week, but judging from Amazon rankings, next week should see a big drop off (as seen last year as well). Parents already bought the Wii U for their kids for Christmas, apparently. I started seeing the Wii U fall down amazon rankings 2 days before Christmas. FFX/X2 HD release should see Vita and Wii U hardware numbers getting close in next week's ranking. It will be interesting to see the PS3 numbers as well. Looks like it may be a tight race between PS3 and Wii U YTD (with Wii U probably coming out on top by a nose).

If you hear mine we'll start again for arrogant behavior and crystal balls.

like I had said for 3D World > 50%drop from DKCR
I'll say it then. Probably close to the 3DS DK numbers.
Edit: I'm sure the spoiler part wasn't there when I wrote my message?!

The sales trajectory of Pokémon X / Y is very similar to Pokémon Black / White, it has the advantage of being released earlier during the generation but I'm starting to wonder if the 5 million mark is in danger. By the way, I never get tired of watching the first 15 weeks of Pokémon Diamond / Pearl.

What's your take on a dramatic price cut? Would it help and if so, when would be the best time to announce one?
I think it would certainly help motivate sales as I see price as the main barrier to buying a system with only a small amount of games, but having several of them be very high quality.

That said, I feel Nintendo's core issue is that as a company, they're largely defined by their IPs and their cash pile. If they significantly eat into their cash pile, they basically become what Sega was before Sammy bought them, where they are constantly on the line depending on their next software and/or hardware to be a hit or risk serious financial issues.

Without a successful secondary business, running a significant loss-leading business is very risky.

That's why I feel they should actually design a system that can be sold very cheaply without losing money, or at least basically breaking even.

Personally, I think Nintendo should have a short gen and try to focus on long-term investment. In services, in research, and speeding up development. Sort of like how Sony screwed the pooch on the PS3 but built up PlayStation Plus quite a bit.

Yeah, I think they basically need to heavily re-examine their "platform experience". Their games are largely fine, but the systems both from a hardware (especially standardized featureset for developers/game engine technology as well as both initial cost and cost reduction over time design) and system software (OS, eShop, community features beyond the MiiVerse, streaming, instantaneously/snappy feeling, etc) perspective is not great.

In the current market I feel your product needs to be both great in terms of library and hardware/platform design, whereas in many previous generations you could often end up nailing one or the other and still generally do okay or at least acceptable.

Oh I think $250 is way too much. I think they should aim for $150 and also considering charging $30-$40 a game. If that's too low for all software, they should still consider releasing a fair amount of retail software around that price point and of course keep pushing a lot of $10-$20 digital software as well. Just Dance's price point on the Wii ($30-$40) was certainly a part of why it became so successful, and the $20 Touch Generation software on the DS was a very good choice as well.

Basically I feel they need to accept that they're going to be a device for:
A.) People who are buying a system for their kids
B.) People who are huge Nintendo enthusiasts or
C.) People who are buying their system in addition to another system

A and C benefit a ton from price, and B will also benefit from price in that any of them who are financially pressured will be able to jump on much earlier.

Yeah, I figured Monster Hunter 4 wouldn't get as big a boost as Nintendo's games during this time, but I did expect it to do a bit more.
Still, it's primarily family titles (Nintendo's games) that receive the big boosts.

BUT, MHP3 never got a digital release did it? Or at least WAY later, didn't it happen like in 2012? MH4 has been digital since day 1 and we know it's likely 300k+ (don't remember the specifics), so the gap is much closer.

The only disappointing thing about the great overall performance of Monster Hunter 4 is the low increase during these last weeks.

That's true, a few weeks ago I would expect a 100k week for week 51, it managed only half of that. Big competition from other evergreen titles limited its sales.

MH4 has been digital since day 1 and we know it's likely 300k+ (don't remember the specifics), so the gap is much closer.

Read more carefully.

So Falcom is making a PS4 title, but is making Sen no Kiseki 2 for PS3/Vita first.

A major Toukiden sequel is also in the works (shocking news).

At the rate we're going, the PS4 might as well have released in February 2015.

Ps4 is going to have a miserable year 1 but I think it will recover

I also am slightly disappointed by mh4's holiday (no that still doesn't make the game a disappointment)

Does someone have a comprehensive list of all 3ds games announced for retail next year?

The first generation transition is usually hard.

I'd point to GTA:SA -> GTA 4 -> GTA 5 as an example of this.

GTA 4 did have excellent legs in the end though and managed to climb up over GTA:SA, but to my knowledge it took much longer to hit the 20 million mark.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Wow great results for Wii U :) Hopefully Wii U had similar results if not better in NOA for the month of December.

Puzzle & Dragons a million-seller congrats in two-weeks! That's amazing!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Did Toukiden sequel get a mention in last week's Famitsu? Still, that's certainly for Vita.

Surely, PS4 will fare better in 2015 than in 2014. 2015 should be when FFXV, KHIII and MGS come, those three alone will help. But PS4 needs something in between. Right now, for 2014 things are looking grim: 2 announcements post-TGS, one port and one late port. Things have to improve in the upcoming weeks, otherwise PS4 could have a problem.

Yeah, IMO the current 2014 line-up for PS4 looks like garbage and I don't think there's really much time left to announce anything else for release earlier than Fall 2014.

You forgot Yoshi's New Island.

Everyone forgets Yoshi's New Island, unsurprisingly.

EDIT: I seen that edit (New Yoshi Story), people even forget the name of the game. :p

Yeah, IMO the current 2014 line-up for PS4 looks like garbage and I don't think there's really much time left to announce anything else for release earlier than Fall 2014.

Sony really should just get 3rd parties to do some ports PS3 games to tide PS4 over for a while. Also games like KH HD 2.5 should come out on both.

Also thanks for the lists guys. The 3DS has a decent lineup, but it's going to have another decent decline this year. Has there ever been a time when a system peaked in its 2nd year?

Wii Fit U is showing up in the Famitsu Top 30 for the second time since it was released. In case there was any doubt that it will be another franchise that will go from selling a couple of million units to just barely a few hundred thousand copies, we just need to take a look at these figures.

In 2 months less than 50.000 people have bought the bundle that includes Wii Fit U despite only costing 2.000 more yens. Interesting that sell-through rate, Famitsu must be tracking the bundle as an special edition because they are giving sell-through data for a game only available at retail via download card. As we can see, it is very low so it's not that there weren't many units available.

We have the following Wii U hardware sales breakdown:

There is a little margin of error because I'm basing my calculation on New Super Mario Bros. U and evidently some people (not too many) must have bought the standalone version.

Bundle 1 (32,800 yen): 32GB Wii U + New Super Mario Bros. U + Wii Party U + Sensor Bar + Wii Remote + 30 days of Karaoke service - 97.648

Bundle 2 (34,800 yen): 32GB Wii U + New Super Mario Bros. U + Wii Party U + Wii Fit U + Sensor Bar + Fit Meter + Wii Remote + 30 days of Karaoke service - 16.125

Wii U Basic / Deluxe - 5.386

Total - 119.159

Do they get a retail copy of Wii Fit U this way or is it a download card as well? Because if it is a download card, you're getting 20€ worth of additional content (the price for the Fitmeter) for 20€ more on the console; you can download Wii Fit U for free if you buy a Fitmeter at the moment. So if it is just a digital copy, this bundle isn't worth anything and I can very well see people just buying the other bundle and then maybe a Fitmeter a few weeks later. Let's at least wait until Wii Fit U is officially released...

Yoshi's Island is actually one of my favorite games of all time, but I have no faith in this one, haha.

I feel the unusual thing with the 3DS is that it had such an astronomical price cut in the first year that it basically accelerated its cycle forward in the same way the extreme prices of the Xbox 360 and PS3 elongated theirs.

I don't blame you one bit lol, Yoshi's Island is one of my favorite games of all time too. YI DS wasn't good, and I don't expect this to be good either. =/

Dat vaporware. Though personally, I would rather see Inafune continue working on Soul Sacrifice (make it play better) and Mighty No. 9.

I'm aware that it's looking like vapourware but the official page does say 2014 hence why I've included it.

Hmm, that's I never really thought about it that way before. While there probably will be a decline in Japan, I don't really expect it to drop below 4 million on the year. What's worrying is what will happen in the west next year if there isn't a sustained holiday bump. The software release schedule isn't nearly as brisk and Nintendo has pretty much played all their big cards they can play.
