Media Create Sales: Week 6, 2014 (Feb 03 - Feb 09)

He said " These aren't going mobile or 3ds". Well, they already did and will. I didn't make any sales forecasts.
Yeah, spinoffs and ports have the same sales potential. You can't compare Biohazard 7 and Revelations 3DS. Capcom would never make a mainline RE for a handheld.
They also both had more announced support post release from Japan, that'll release in the first year.

As did the wii u.
That is really the only reason anyone might be worried. That there haven't been many announcements yet. But they'll have to come eventually because where are these games going to go??

Strange logic that is.
Would you say that the Vita is in decline in Japan?

If so, when did the decline begin?

What do you feel is the 'actual' baseline for the Vita?

This isn't intended to be a gotcha. I genuinely don't understand your perception of the device.

He said " These aren't going mobile or 3ds". Well, they already did and will. I didn't make any sales forecasts.

There's always been handheld spin-offs of major console franchises since the days of Gameboy. Nothing's changed in that regard.

The fear, is of course, mothership titles move to handheld and say goodbye to consoles for good.

Anyway I feel like people are expecting way too much from Ishin and Ground Zeroes.

I don't see any of them doing more than 200k LTD on the PS4 personally.

The truly big games (XV, KH3, RE7 etc) still don't have a release date.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
As opposed to ¥60,000(ps3)? Yes. The Wii U started at ¥35,000 btw.

It's certainly cheaper than PS3, but...being "just" cheaper than PS3 isn't exactly a definition of cheap, especially in the current Japanese market, where there is a much bigger relevance of handhelds compared to the rest of the world, especially considering the franchises coming. In Japan, gamers have an "alternative": 3DS and Vita, and mobile.
Yeah, Wii U is 35,000 Yen for the Premium pack, and we all saw how well it did. Of course, 2015 will be better, but 2014 will be bad, very bad. Higher than Wii U bad, but not as much as people think.

And the amount of announcements for the console is scarily low so far. Seriously, we had, what? Two-three games announced since TGS in total? And two of them being portings from Tecmo Koei? I think announcements will be made in the future, there must be something coming, but these last months have been completely empty. Vita had something like 10 announcements in the weeks right before the launch, we've yet to see something similar, and we're still hoping that the next Senran Kagura Vs. has a PS4 SKU.

That's what people said about PS4/Xbone before their western release.

Neogaf really overexagerates importance of exclusives and start lineups in initial months.
People buying console in first months are buying them for their future potential or because of proven track record with their predecessor.
Certainly in the west the PS4 doesn't really have any "system seller" software. It's more or less selling itself. We'll just have to see whether that remains true in Japan, though with the success of GTA there does still seem to be an audience that wants big AAA console games and they'll need to move to the PS4 if they want more of them.

I think he's talking more about selling 16k a week despite 3 new releases.

Not a decline, the starting point is too low, but it's pretty bad.

Though the whole Japanese industry can be described like that right now, aside from mobiles which is booming.

In a way western sales will help PS4 like they helped PS3. No matter how badly PS4 will start it will still get the games like MGS, FF, KH and RE (and well GTA nowadays) because those games sell majority of their sales in the west. Then it also starts to sell in Japan and more and more mid sized games appear. It will be a lot like PS3. Slow burner.

As long as those major franchises with their mainline entries aren't hitting the 3DS/vita I don't consider them 'options'. I can definitely see the ps4 having an unimpressive start. My argument is that it will eventually have to start selling because in the end it'll be the sole home console around.

PS4 can't come soon enough as recent japanese numbers are both boring and depressing. PS4 will at least bring some entertainment for a few months.

I was anticipating 3ds and Vita hw numbers creeping closer together. Nintendo needs to get proactive and do something to boost 3ds sales though they are probably gonna let it coast until the holidays

No, but those won't be significant figures. And these aren't low numbers at all. A remake of a spinoff is a different thing to a remake of a mainline installment, or a brand new Monsters game, or...a brand new mainline game. Do people think anything named Dragon Quest is an automatic million seller?
Which begs the question. Why isn't SE producing new installments of the Monster series on 3DS? I don't think there'd be too much of extra work involved from these GB remakes to new games.

Hey, Wii U just outsold 360. How long did it take 3DS and Vita to manage that?

PSV surpassed 360 in something like 80 weeks according to Media Create and 81 weeks according to Famitsu.

WiiU is in its ~62th week right now.

Last YTD: 3DS outsold Vita 9:1
This YTD: 3DS outsold Vita 2:1

Obviously the 3DS is still selling much better than the Vita but it is still a dramatic difference.

Bad sales all around imo. DQM2 is doing decent at least.

I don't expect DKCTF to give the Wii U a huge bump, but I hope I'm wrong. The first game managed to get close to ~1 million sales but when you look at the Wii's install base at the time, the game wasn't selling like hotcakes. I doubt this one will either.

Vita's doing well. WiiU getting close to the baseline of sub 5k as expected.

RIP. Can't say I'm overly surprised, but if anyone knows what actually triggered this I'd be curious. (oh, nvm, GTA5 parent/teacher thread.. a little anticlimactic in view of what he's known for around here, lol)

And yeah, it's disconcerting how quickly the Wii U has fallen back down to that baseline. Nintendo overall can't be too happy. I wouldn't exactly use "well" to describe the Vita's performance; only in comparison to the even more dire straits seen last year.

The whole market looks fairly crappy. We'll see soon how the PS4 affects things. Guaranteed short turn explosion at the minimum.

If anything the relevance of handhelds has severely declined since the DS/PSP days.

As long as PS4 gets the big games as it will, FF, KH, RE, MGS, Tales, GTA etc it will continue to had a considerable user base and attraction.

The Western games should keep enough interest in the system until the Idolmaster type games arrive. The Last of Us did fairly well over there with no expectations and GTA did great. CoD and BF4 do alright.
Maybe Sony will announce a few new titles before the launch also.

I think that's all people are saying. It's doing better than last year, which maybe indicative that it will have another YoY growth. It doesn't have the price drop this year but we'll see. Some good releases in March, should carry it above 20k for a while. What's beyond that to keep the sales up, I'm not too sure.

Surprised no one pointed out that Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed was announced for Wii U and PS3 in Japan for May 15th and Monster Hunter Frontier GG was announced for Wii U, 360, and PS3 for April 23rd. Both via Famitsu.

Or maybe there's an error, I'm just seeing this:

【 5/15】[PS3/Wii U] セガ「ソニック&セガ オールスターズ レーシング」6,980円

【 4/23】[PS3/360/Wii U] カプコン「モンスターハンター フロンティアGG」
■新モンスター、新フィールド
 新武器センリュウコン…打撃系で形を変化させリーチをのばすことも
 形の変化はコンボではなくなった

The first name is for the original SASAR, but everyone else including Famitsu's site says it's Transformed:

I think Vita will be the only platform this year to show growth though. Everything else will be down YoY and the PS4 will suck the air out of the room for Wii U just as it has done in the west.

2DS won't do much to increase the baseline in Japan. The market is not as price sensitive as in the west and the 2DS is not as portable. It is a device designed for western audiences. Take a look at the current sales split, the XL takes the majority of sales every week and it is significantly more expensive than the vanilla one. A lower price won't add much to sales in Japan IMO, it will just work to lower Nintendo's already squeezed margins.
What exactly is going to push Vita up YOY though? All I see for releases are direct sequels or franchise spinoffs to games already on the system and 2013 already boasted a price cut and two hardware revisions for the platform. I think Vita's early YOY gains are getting to people's heads, it looks like a rough year ahead for anything to drive userbase outside the norm and I doubt Jan/Feb will be enough to push it up YOY overall.

Likewise Wii U's post-holiday doldrums are having a lot of influence on opinion it seems. Not that there isn't reason to be pessimistic, there's plenty, but unlike Vita at least Wii U's big titles this year aren't essentially games that people already bought the system for. Vita doesn't have anything near as potentially big as Mario Kart or Smash Bros, and given the system's current trajectory it might never.

Well, to be fair, sequels do a fair amount of hardware pushing. I mean, look at the growth from MHP/MH2P. That and some of the games had Vita/PSP precursors whereas the sequel is all Vita, so it might push holdovers to leap.

Did Capcom quietly cancel MHFG on Vita?

Does anyone know the reason for the fairly good Terraria numbers? Kinda surprising to see that much headway in the Japanese market for a foreign indy game but happy for the devs.

I'm not comfortable with 3DS not being in beast mode in Japan. What happened? Those sales clearly didn't shift to another system (except mobile, I guess?).

Overall hardware is down 33% year over year YTD.

The 3DS, the only healthy platform, is down 44.4% year over year YTD and barely double a joke platform like the Vita YTD.

The Japanese dedicated market is very unhealthy.

They probably saw Terry's Wonderland 3D sell almost a million copies and decided that was the way to go this time around. With DQM it must be even cheaper with the reuse of engine and assets of TW3D. Wouldn't be surprised to see a Caravan Heart remake instead of a Joker 3 next.

Market saturation?
While I don't disagree with your assessment, market saturation and hardware baselines are tanking tremendously generation over generation, and hardware peak years seem to be coming earlier as well.

I'm not expecting the PS4 to buck the trend either.

I still think they should make a new Monsters game... as well as a new mainline DQ game for 3DS. The fanbase is clearly still there on the 3DS if they're buying DQ remakes en masse like this.

I'd say those are fairly good sales for DQM2, considering it's the 2nd DQM remake and third DQ remake. Hardware seems to be bad across the board. It's kind of surprising that DQM2 would cause a HW sales bump at all honestly considering there already was Terry's Wonderland and a DQ7 remake on the system. Seems like Puyo Puyo sold in-line with what previous titles have done, thanks to the 3DS version. All the rest of the versions sold fairly crappily (esp the PS3 version imo), although I think eventually they may get through most of the Vita and Wii U shipments. I think they won't get through the 150K they hoped to sell on PS3 however...

Week 6, 2014 (2/3-2/9) - 5.448 / 520.580

Well at least 3D World held a similar kind of trend to NSMBU and I think generally did better in the new year than NSMBU did. Oh well, I think we'll slowly see it fall off the Famitsu charts as well, partly b/c of DKC.

Heh, that's why I think Nintendo needs to release 2DS in Japan, but not only that, a new 3DS model, a "premium one" you know, something that would make users wanting to upgrade. But I feel like 3DS successor will come sooner than we think.

I'm seeing this sentiment pop up more and more, and it would be an absolutely, astronomically terrible idea for Nintendo to cut the 3DS life short, especially with the Wii U in disaster mode.

There are plenty of things for them to do to reinvigorate 3DS sales, before even remotely considering a successor.

Would the 2DS even do much in Japan? It's not exactly built for portability, at least not in the same way that most handhelds are.

Famitsu:

DQM1 - 488,508 / 910,568
DQM2 - 437,077

I didn't expect it to sell so close to the first one, especially with the popular Mobile game released a few weeks ago. Now let's see how far it can go!

So it sold almost the same and people are still trying it. Mess.

Worrisome numbers for 3DS. And even worst, Vita is not getting any real benefits from that. Console gaming is dying in Japan y'all.

Exactly. I think they'll do something to increase the appeal of the 3DS. They don't have the time to go and create a new handheld and the software needed to support it now when the Wii U (and the QOL platform later) will need that support.

Vita will hold the fort for Sony in 2014, while PS4 awaits greatness and end of past-gen ports.

Vita will hold the fort? The PS3 will continue to hold the fort in all honesty. It at least has decent software sales compared to the Vita. The Vita will be in a support role with its HW sales (knowing Sony I'd assume they probably aren't making much money on Vita HW per unit).

What should they try that they haven't already that you feel will raise the system's sales notably?

Feel free to list Japan and the West separately since they're rather different markets and have different hardware SKUs available already.
