My thing is, i’m much as I respect how good the RE engine looks, I absolutely do NOT want a “realistic” looking Mega Man game. Go with something more cel shaded (Khezan: The First Berserker, I actually really love the art style for that main character), not something not so “dark” and generally depressing.
In fact, I find MOST modern games just look depressing as shit today.
I want games that look FUN and are more upbeat. As far as the X series and its story; I would agree, the execution was never really there. X4 and beyond clearly wanted to do more, but they sort of fumbled the ball whenever they tried to go deeper with the story. I feel like they had interesting IDEAS, though.
Honestly, if I was in charge, here is exactly what I would do:
Mega Man X9, in which somehow X returns to the Classic series. As he tries to understand what it happening in the Classic timeline, Zero continues searching for X in the future. The game culminates with Wily finishing Zero in *the past*, who goes on a rampage seeking to destroy everyone.
Zero manages to find a way to the past as well, and in order to save everyone, he absorbs the original “Zero Virus” into himself (rendering the newly-built Zero completely inert). However, the corruption overwhelms Zero’s (our version) systems, but before completely losing control, he asks X to destroy them.
We then FINALLY get the true “X vs. Zero” confrontation the entire series was always building towards. Neither of them wants to destroy the other, but there is no other option.
You destroy Zero as the game’s final boss, and you get a stinger that the newly constructed Zero (who doesn’t has any of *our* Zero’s memories, or even personality) has been training under X, and will remain behind to protect the world, while X goes back to his timeline to bring peace (maybe Dr. Light and Wily are able to create an “antidote” to the Maverick virus, so X can usher in a world of peace once and for all in his reality). He leaves this new “Zero” to forge his own identity, setting up a whole new series (hell, maybe this version of Zero takes up the name “Omega”, or just “Xero” as the most anime way possible of distinguishing himself from old school Zero, who finally sacrificed himself for X to achieve his dream of peace).
You could even sell a whole “Zero DLC” of what bosses HE was taking out before he could travel to the Classic timeline.
Good lord do I wish I could help make a new MMX game…
