I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
hot take, would be great if all console games only has 60fps option, even without RT or lower settings.

EDIT:

I think by doing this, the devs can "set a console fidelity standard" for console gamers and manage their expectations.
And with only 1 mode available, it should be easier for the devs to optimize their games, 1 mode , 1 console.

The options are good, there is no need to reduce options, just not include those that do not contribute anything or are unnecessary because are objectively worse than other existing ones in the game.

With the arrival of TV VRR, screen monitor and AI technology, more options are convenient.

Console game settings take like, a minute tops in my experience. Graphical vs performance, understandable. Display settings, good for those depending on their eyesight and the lighting situation of the room. Subtitle options, of course. And so forth. Most settings don’t even need to be touched, just scroll past. But they’re good for people who might desire or even require certain adjustments.

Like I said, this should take a minute, maybe two to do per game. Hardly an issue. This is like Seinfeld with Jerry telling Elaine that her drink is one that needs to be shaken first before drinking, Elaine starts ranting how she’s tired of products that require shaking, and Jerry just picks up the container and starts casually shaking it and sarcastically says, “oh yeah, this is a huge hassle.”

I bet if 60 fps was standard, the optimization of games would improve drastically as all they have to do is work on 1 graphical setting.

Ever since we started getting 100 different options for visual and performance, the optimization of games has gone to shits cause more time could be spent bug squashing... but even that is asking for too much these days.

On PS5 Pro you usually has a Pro Performance and Pro Quality, sometimes in addition to regular PS5 modes still available.
Then you have to consider whether you want PSSR and so on.
Yeah that would be annoying honestly. I haven't dealt with that I guess.

PSSR isn't typically a separate settings from the modes. Why would you consider Pro if you only want the default experience?
I don't want the default experience, I want the best experience that I can get without having to tinker with graphic settings.

There should always be a 40fps (or more obviously if possible) balanced mode now. Options are always good, but give me something in the middle that doesnt make me feel like i'm losing out massively either way.

I wish Devs would rather simply ignore this Thread.

I would never want to be forced playing at 30fps. Nor I can understand why would someone want to prevent other people from enjoying the always more common additional 120fps modes. Or why would want to take away from people the choice of disabling RT, for one reason or another, or the choosing the AA method.

I can't especially imagine someone being okay with the immature PSSR version being forced on users with no other choice, which is simply unacceptable.

Options are good, and people have different preferences and priorities.

The ideal console scenario to me is, especially for Next Gen, Fidelity Mode at 4K 60fps or 8K 30fps, Performance Mode at 1440p 120fps.
And an always present option to unlock framerate, and toggles for RT and PT, which should both work flawlessly at least in Fidelity Mode.

If the default mode is Quality and they simply take away Performance mode then you are getting the default experience. That's what you want. No option. That doesn't equate to "best".

I'm fine with the way things are.

Let's be real, people have been whining about devs not giving us options for years and now that they do, people whine because they don't want options.

Maybe people should just stop watching all these DF comparisons.

I’d agree with you if devs/marketers actually seemed to care about giving us 60fps above improved visuals in general.

As it stands shiny graphics are easier to show off and sell to consumers than 60fps, and that’s not going to change.

So I’ll happily take an additional graphics option. Having only two options, like Performance Mode/Fidelity Mode is still very easy and simplified imo.

Too many people here are pulling the straw man argument "Ah, so you want to be stuck with 30 fps?".

No, of course not. No one ever asked for 30 fps. Gamers know this, devs know this, everyone on GAF knows this.

Just not true. There is a vocal contingent of gamers right here on GAF that advocate higher fidelity at 30fps. This is why options are best.

I somewhat agree, it doesn't help that graphical setting descriptions are sometimes strangely vague and confusing i.e. favour fps and favour graphics etc. They are also obnoxiously hidden in the system menu. I wonder how many people have played in 30fps quality mode when a preferable 60fps was only a toggle away?

If we had to have a setting I'd much prefer an option on initial start-up of the game, alongside brightness and HDR brightness settings. With that being said, I would applaud either Microsoft or Sony if they mandated a minimum 1440p (internal) and 60fps for all games. Then FSR or PSSR image reconstruction to 4k. This would annoy developers but would ultimately provide a better overall user experience for us consumers... with the added benefit of no more graphical options necessary.

I voted no, because I just want to turn on a console game and it is already the preferred way to play.

However, I would take a quality and performance mode, that's fine. I don't want granular settings as it's just more shit to mess around with. I have a PC to do that with.

They should just get a PC, turn on old school super-sampling and render at 8k.

Not ruin life for the rest of us.

the advantages of a single mode for console................
-dev will know the limitations and optimize the game engine around those limits
-for those who want higher settings , they can always buy the remaster/remake down the line e.g demons souls
-keep the cluster fuck of graphical options out of my console games , those should stay on PC
-i believe in generations

Yeah, with the PS5 Professional you can have like 6 different modes.

Keep two:
Performance
Quality

You can also have a toggle for RT.

That's it. I use console to make it easier for me. Don't want to go through the manual to read which option does what for each game

Not sure why choosing between 2-3 presets would be a bad thing.

It's not at all like PC gaming where you're choosing between dozens and dozens of obscure settings.

I don't want to tinker around with graphics settings - that's why I bought a console.

Optimize the settings for me, so that when I start the game, it plays smooth and looks beautiful.
Those 2 things are differently important for different people. If you don't want to change the settings just ignore it.

To have best possible performance and visual fidelity.

It should be up to devs to find the optimal settings. It's their game and they should take the responsibility to present it in the best light possible.
Guess what? The Pro offers that. It’s just that it also offers other options. How is that a negative?

And the absolute best experience is on PC anyway, a platform that leads the option chain.

Totally agree OP. Sony said that a vast majority of people use 60fps mode anyway, so just get rid of the 30fps mode. We didn't have such nonsense on PS2, it's not necessary. You buy a console to get the best crafted experience from the devs, not to have to toggle through 8 different modes.

All we should have is a 60fps or 120fps HFR mode.

I’m of two minds:

1) A major selling point of consoles is ease of use. When I turn it on, I want everything to work the way the developer intends.

2) Giving users options to tailor-make their experience should be welcomed. That is, after all, the essence of video games.
