Metroid 4 Prime: Beyond | New Trailer

The 3D Metroid games are a shameful blind-spot in my gaming experiences. I was never convinced that the transformation to the third dimension added anything to the series.

But seeing how excited people are for this one I might give the remake of the first one a spin.

The transition to 3D was like SM64 and OOT

I hope you still enjoy it, even tho you're 20 years lttp.

In motion, and during gameplay, I think games from that era can still look really good. You really can't judge a game based solely on screenshots, because you aren't examining every little detail in the heat of the action.
Fair, though that should apply to MP4's screens as well. For what it's worth, I think PS4-era games look as good as ever, especially something like Infamous: Second Son. Some of the best looking PS3/360 games though, at least those aiming for realism, just haven't aged as well, IMO.

Honestly, that's part of why I'm excited for Nintendo to make the next jump. I'm not a graphics snob by any means, but I'll be happy to have a new baseline.

I am really excited for this, and think the trailer looked great. Metroid in general is very "low energy" in terms of shit happening on screen at a given moment. I do agree the series could advance most in combat, there is no reason they can't go in a direction more like the newer Doom games. But at the heart of the series are puzzles and exploration, even during combat and in boss battles.

The psychic powers can seem generic, but I really liked the guided beam power - there is so much they can do with that alone, and combined with other abilities/upgrades I can see some really fun potential as a Metroid fan. Those who haven't played Metroid or the Prime series probably can't comprehend, they have nothing to go on.

Also, loving the new suit look.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond looks incredible for a Video Game on the Nintendo Switch!!!

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is probably using PBR (Physical Based Rendering) at 60 FPS like Metroid Prime Remastered which is a wonder on the Nintendo Switch.

Retro Studios are truly Wizards :)

It clearly looks worse than MP Remastered, the textures in particular. Which makes sense, because it's clearly a more expansive game, so something has to give.
I don't see it. From models' details, textures, physics, animation works, lighting, etc., MP4 is clearly better than Remastered.

Especially the details between the two monsters, from polycount to texture details, the difference is massive.

It's better in some ways and worse in others to my eyes.

Just different lighting I guess (and the poor quality of his pic).

Overall MPR and MP4 look pretty close to my eyes, which is "normal" I would say because MPR is already one the most beautiful games on Switch and they use the same engine on the same hardware.

(900p / 60 fps game but the pics were made with the capture feature on Switch, which is not that good, compression and 720p, it still looks good)

I'm a huge Metroid fan (pseudo is shamelessly inspired from the Varia suit and Samus is a hunter... duh huh), but I've never been completely on board with the Prime art direction as I think it should go back to its horror/tension/sci-fi roots (Super Metroid). Don't get me wrong, I've loved Prime 1 and 2 and it was my most anticipated game on GC back in the day (even dreaming about it...).

But, something in the Prime series was missing. Prime has almost nothing to do with the original ambiance from Alien, and it's a shame. You won't ever be afraid in the Prime series. It's atmospheric for sure, but it leans towards wonder instead of dread and horror the series was originally known for. The music is totally different in tone, the graphics show absolutely no gore (while they did on a SNES system...) and nothing is oppressing in the atmosphere (aside from some part of Prime 2).

And don't get me started on the gameplay, which was a good thing on its own, but was absolutely not a good 2D to 3D translation.
Samus agility is completely gone, she's a fucking tank. The lock-on is a disgrace but was a necessity with the abysmal second joystick of the GC gamepad. They kept the exploration part, but totally shifted the main gameplay element, leaning towards analysis and puzzles with a bit of assisted shooting. To this day, this is why 2D Metroid and Prime have almost nothing in common except the exploration part.

Other M was a good step in the right direction but was ultimately mediocre for other reasons.

I've been longing for a 3rd person action/platformer/shooter (akin to Returnal for example, without the rogue aspect and some light BTA additions like in Other M) with more emphasis on the platforming part. And I've been deceived by Other M, which is ok but really not what I wanted for that IP, being constrained by the Wii remote and Sakamoto (lastly) idiotic ideas.

Also, I felt like Metroid Prime 4 was more beautiful in its reveal than in the second trailer. Weird. Hopefully the difference is meaningful on Switch 2 (if there's a Switch 2 version, but I don't see why they wouldn't do that...). On another hand, I'm not that excited by ANOTHER Prime and they showed nothing different from the first 3 episodes.

But I'll still buy it anyway...

Probably going to be the only Nintendo game to be 120fps for the entire gen, thanks to Retro Studios.
Really? You think their 2D games won't get the option? I'd be surprised if Metroid 6 didn't have it for ex, and for 3D games I could see it for the next Splatoon since the franchise generally has simple geometry.

Still no release date..?
This is the only reason to get a Switch 2 at launch for me (if it release at the same day)
It’s all very strange.

If it’d be available at launch I feel they would’ve told us though.. They did for Mario Kart World. So seems unlikely.

The game’s not dated, yet. It’s not strange at all. The Switch version is 2025 TBA. So of course the Switch 2 Edition would also not have a date. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah but if it’s launch title it should’ve been mentioned, and dated, today. So I assume it’s not.

Yeah I would say it’s clearly not. It’s Mario Kart and a bunch of third party ports at launch. And GameCube NSO. Then DK in July. Kirby Forgotten Land port in August with the new content. So Prolly August or September if I had to guess.

It will only happen in the few games where the developers bothered having a lightweight, optimized engine. I am really skeptical, but we shall see.

is this the power of ps4 ?
Doesn't look like it is much better yeah...

Metroid Prime 4 should have never been announced for Switch. Now the game will look less on S2 because of them announcing it for S1.

I hate cross gen ports. We had to wait for almost 20 years to then get a end of lifecycle game?

Ugh.
