Moneyhatted temporary exclusives aside, Sony's first-party studio output has never been worse in their 30 year history.

After reading some daft takes here, let’s apply the same logic to platform holder Microsoft.

Stalker is a timed exclusive that was not even published by Xbox.

MSFS 2024 was developed by a 3rd party on a 3rd party engine and tech.

Indiana is a result of a moneyhatting of an entire publisher.

Ara was developed by a 3rd party.

So Xbox has no games this year by that logic, except maybe a remake of Age of Mythology.

I mean this is so silly. You have a 4 year old library to play through while the rest of us who have been there since launch have already been there and done that. And having played them all, i can safely say that they are simply too formulaic and too samey. I dont feel spoiled. I feel bloated being fed the same thing over and over again.
Well, things aren't black and white - and I should add that I came from gaming on PC for over two decades.

Having said that, I have no idea how much you have to play on a daily basis, to really play all multiplatform, first party and top indie games there are to play. It seems nearly impossible to me.

I don't follow many YouTubers but I do follow HappyConsoleGamer. He choses JRPG's over many other, big games, and even with focusing on RPG's alone, on a yearly basis, I cannot find the time and energy to buy and play every "must play RPG" of the year.

Maybe it's more about expanding your interests? Because I don't feel as if I'm being fed the same thing over and over again. In 2024 alone I was able to go from Alan Wake 2 Deluxe to Astro Bot to Unicorn Overlord to Stellar Blade to Romancing Saga 2 to Balatro. Only to finish up with DarkTide and PoE2. I haven't even finished any game I just mentioned apart from Unicorn Overlord.

The diversity, quality and depth that is available in gaming today, is incredible.

Edit: Sony's first party output could be better, but I don't see it as an issue with the wealth of games available.

But I didn't include the PS5 games. If we just go by Sony first party, I feel like GT7 , Ragnarok, Returnal, R&C rift apart, forbidden West and spider man 2 are probably better than the PS4 list. I would agree if we go by just all games, I would probably take PS4. The power of Bloodborne baby!

Also my point is I think people don't really remember some of the down times and just remember playing great games. Again, sonys first party had not much to note between second son and uncharted 4. Pretty long gap saved by second party, exclusivity deals and what not
Horizon and God of War are PS4 games. PS4 had GT6 at this point. It had Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, Infamous Second Son and The Last Guardian and many others. I don't think it's close. Naughty Dog's actual followup to Last of Us pt 2 isn't even announced.

The game doesn't deserve the praise because that's all it is, a cutesy little platformer. There's nothing new or innovative.

It's the perfect short and casual game for a reviewer to turn on and enjoy for a few hours, however. It's the kind of game I'd want Sony to make if I wanted them to be like Nintendo I guess...
Games like Elden Ring got lot of praise but did that game did anything "innovative"? No, but the game got praise it was fun to play same with Astro Bot.

Why is it always whataboutism with Sony guys when there are genuine discussions to be had at how poor their output has been vs previous gens.

Microsoft own Bethesda and have done for years. Indy is their game.

People want to talk about organic growth and purchases and Bethesda was probably the most organic purchase outside of Plauground games they could make.

Todd and ms and the zenimax guys had been friends and nurturing a relationship since Morrowind on the og xbox.

I’m just applying stupid OP logic to the only home console vendor that is not Sony. And it perfectly shows how stupid the whole argument is.

And my point still stands.

Astrobot singelhandedly made me rebuy a ps5. other than that there is not a single exclusive game that i am interested in on either platform (xbox or ps). So yes, its a terrible gen.

That you can demote every platform holded with OPs logic.
Eh, MSFS2024, CoD, Indiana & Age of Mythology is better than Sonys first party output this year.

No need to do random goalposts in and out of the thread I think that’s all it boils down to, Sony wasted to much time chasing GAAS and didn’t deliver and now it’s going to be a few years until output catches up, not even sure what’s coming next year as a heavy hitter for them?

Yeah. That live service shit set them back big time. It be till ps6 till they have things back up to norm maybe

This false narrative is starting to get tiresome. The live service move was additive to the traditional model, not subtractive. In fact, they increased investment in the traditional model as well, like Sony's business segment briefings of 2022 show for FY25.

They also greatly increased investment in new IPs for FY25, and we'll probably see the results in the near future.

I think the biggest factor is Sony going multiplatform with PC. Somethings had to be sacrificed, they did. The thing which makes a platform special/unique at the core is the exclusive games/experiences they provide.

Sony

Nintendo
If Microsoft has the best first party exclusives ever and they make it 100% exclusive to Xbox, it won't be significant for their Xbox sales
If Sony has the worst first party lineup ever, it won't be signiicant for ther Playstation sales.

The sooner you realise that the market is already consolidated and Playstation is a cultural phenomenan where first party does't actually matter, the sooner you'll live a happier life.
