Interested to watch the reviews for this one. Got burned out big time by World....will see if Wilds can pull me back. It looks OK, but I don't really know what the new hooks are to seem like I need to sink tons of hours into it again

My one and only confirmed day one this year.
Capcom`s abysmal optimization might have even subconsciously pressured me into upgrading my rig :messenger_grinning_sweat:

If GTA series is like a big event in the west, in Japan its MH Rise 2 they are crazy about. Ill buy this next for sure.
FTFY.

Believe it or not, World is one of the worst selling MonHun games in Japan. It isn't really a surprise though, Japan doesn't buy Playstayion software like they used to. Rise, on the other hand, completely trumped Worlds in sale in Japan and it wasn't even close.

This is overwhelmingly likely because Rise came out on the switch, a handheld in a country that massively favors portable gaming. Had World been out on the switch as well this would have been a very different outcome, and it wouldn’t even be close.

The numbers for Worlds Japanese sales I was basing this off of is from Gaijinhunter, which is a very trusted analyst in regards to MonHun. He doesn't differentiate between Steam and PS4 sales of MHW, just Japanese sales in general.

Oh I 100% agree with this. I've said this in other places several times but if Capcom and Nintendo weren't in talks early on in Wilds and Switch 2s development to make sure Wilds could run on Switch 2, then what are they even doing? It would be a massive financial mess up from either party to not have had that discussion to get their ducks in a row.

Interesting, so japanese people only like to play on portables? What a bunch of weirdos :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I guess you could maybe argue it makes sense that they're almost kinda conditioned that way, since Monster Hunter was, for a long time, largely a portable game in a way.

"Fun" fact, the first time I actually noticed Monster Hunter as this huge IP was when it was shown in an episode of Haganai (fantastic anime, btw). They played it on PSP, that's how I got curious and got it for my own PSP (which was by that time already hugely outdated).

btt: I won't watch any new content regarding Monster Hunter. This is finally a game again in which I wanna go in as blind as possible.

I get that they were used to play on portables but when you have the option to play with:

Better graphic
Better performances
Better audio
Better controllers
Bigger screen

And basically every plus that home consoles have over portables and you still chose to play on a partable? It deosn't make much sense to me other than having a weird attachment to portable gaming :lollipop_squinting:

Or maybe the japs only play on the bus, train, work or toilette :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

In those countries if you live in the city you`d have to be rather well off to be able to afford a living space where the standard european/american "big living room with the console under the big TV"-picture would be applicable. Always gives me a reality check when I´m on business trips in south korea or japan about personal space and the affordability of it.
Plus their excellent public transportation makes gaming on the go just that much more attractive.

Wow, that sound miserable, ngl.

They should fucking pay me to play anything other than a pixelated indie that i don't care for on a portable :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Its another life style. Really weird to judge other countries based on your own metrics.

I'm sure they judge us for things they found strange like we judge them for the same thing, so whatever.

Also, i find weird in general playing on portable if you are at home and have an home console available and you don't need portability, it's not a japanese thing, my sister could do the same and i would find it weird because home console beat portable in almost every aspect and it's a fact, not an abstract concept or a different metric, unless you wanna argue that portables have better perfs or graphic or audio or screen size etc.

Don't know if they would calling us weird for liking a specific way of consuming media.

Given the long hours many Japanese people spend commuting on trains, purchasing a handheld device such as the Steam Deck /switch is a logical choice. Its portability and versatility, free from the constraints of traditional hardware, make it an ideal companion for their daily routine, providing entertainment or productivity on the go.

I edited my posts but of course portables are better if you need portability, it's the only freakin advantage they have, my opinion was about people who can chose to play on home console and still chose to play on portables for no apparent reason since home console beat portables in almost every aspect (and it is not really arguable)

I didn't knew that the majority of japanese people lived in small houses that can't even have a room with a big screen, with that in mind i guess portables are the only option other than having a smaller tv.

Btw, you can bet your ass that many japanese think we are weirdos for not sharing some of their costumes, it's the human nature, like many people think that chinese people eating dogs and having a social score is weird as fuck.

man, it baffles me that this game cant run at locked 60fps with good IQ on a PS5, and they are asking for frame gen cards to run above 60fps on PC, what a disgrace.

i´ll be >>very<< pissed if that game ends up having performance problems on my new 5080+9800x3d pc.
But knowing Capcom I´d not even be surprised.
A lot of newer previews however stated that the performance has been much improved from the Beta albeit that being an incredibly low bar......

The demo was running more than fine on my 4080 so i don't think people with a powerfull pc should worry about perfs.

in a 7800x3d + 4090 games dips below 60fps at 4k, remember that this combo ll run RDR2 above 100fps natively 4k and ll even run at 8k DLSS at 60fps, but cant run MHWi at locked 60fps at 4K

yeah, the beta was an absolute shitshow performance wise, especially for how it looked.
And they are really using that same build for another beta-round in february right before release....

Yeah it doesn't look nearly good enough to be that heavy.

I only had like 3 hunts on pc and they were the simple ones (so like 20 min of actual hunting), i guess raydao was heavier with all the thunders and shit.

I didn't really like the graphics but I can't quite tell what the problem is. MHR looked cleaner. Maybe too much film grain? Or are the texture resolutions low? Idk. I'll try again with the second beta.

Yeah I'm with you, 100%, but they do love portables over there. I don't really get it either, never did.

Could it be a function of space? Been watching a lot of videos lately of how tiny and efficient the average Japanese home is. Perhaps they like spending all of their leisure time outside the home, as a result. Keen to understand this more.

Yeah we already cleared up, i wasn't aware that all japs live in very small houses.

A huge number of japanese apartments in dense areas are only a couple hundred square feet, if that. Many don't even include a bathroom in the unit. Let that roll around in your brain for a bit. Though, by extension, many of these apartments are very inexpensive and often include utilities and/or furniture. I actually did a write up about this on gaf a while back.

A laptop or a portable console are basically the only realistic options for a large portion of small apartment dwellers.

Sucks to be them. laughs in 85" tv

On topic: Sort of regret watching this preview video. It's great to see the game looking/performing better, of course, but there is so much footage of stuff I haven't seen yet. I'm going to watch the upcoming capcom event ofc but I wouldn't mind going in more blind. Too bad I already know basically everything thanks to the overwhelming amount of leaks.

Yeah it's better to avoid every trailer and preview and review, i even forgot what was the last official monster announced, i think i'm stuck at the fire octopus as the last one they showed.

The most exciting thing about that monster is that it uses a completely new skeleton. It's exciting that we could potentially be seeing more of a completely new class of monster, cephalopod. You know where cephalopods live? Underwater. Just saying. I'll die on this hill.
