Most Overrated game of the year, 2024 edition

Astro Bot without question.

Gameplay from 1997 with a cheap Dreamworks look.

This is a Razzie winner, not a Game of the Year.

Thankfully the market received it much more appropriately. That's what matters at the end of the day.

Most of the games I've played were rated about right, imo.

Astro Bot and Metaphor was amazing. Indiana Jones was great. I'm playing Space Marines 2 now and so far I'd say that game is incredibly underrated.

But if I had to pick one then it would probably be Dragon's Dogma 2. I was excited for it at first, but the conscious decision to fuck up the entire game with that curse was incredibly stupid. Never finished it because of that. Still planning on going back and completing it, but man did that leave a sour taste.

So glad Balatro did not steal GOTY. But watch, it will probably win at the DICE awards because honestly almost all the "triple AAA" games this year that are contenders are underwhelming in one way or another.

I would say after perusing this thread, Balatro, Wukong, and Metaphor are the consensus for most overrated, with maybe Astrobot in 4th and Stellar Blade in 5th. Dragons Dogma 2 definitely getting a lot of votes even though I don't think it was that highly rated in the first place.

Good thread. Constructive!

Black Myth: Wukong is the only answer. Good game, but people make it feel like Game of the Generation or something.
Indeed.

I love this type of game. I play even the low budget janky ones.

Wukong is cool.... But there are so many better games than it.

Compared to new ips from "unproved" studios, Lies of P and Stellar Blade are so much better than Wukong.

To me it's Astrobot

It's a really cute and fun game that really plays safe. And the art design is so ugly, imo.

It's kinda insane how it won the TGA just by being fine.

I would have personally given it to Wukong for it being ambitious af in execution. Enormous game, better than FROM games in some aspects and beautifully designed.

Wukong by a mile. A new_unreal_engine_project.ue5 visual design and system optimisation, with generic souls combat, invisible walls, boring level layout, boss rush difficulty and the artistic taste of a Japanese brothel. 2024 has been a very weak year for this title to be a thing.

My God, talking shit about Wukong's art should be banned

Hilarious to see Astro Bot and Stellar Blade coming up when we endured Hellblade and Veilguard — games that scored 10+ MC points higher than they were worth.
Had to see your post to remind me that Hellblade 2 came out this year

That game came out and was instantly forgotten, goddamn

I'm going to have to go with Indiana Jones. Its not a terrible game by any means. But my time with it showed such horrendously bad AI with truly awful/bland/shallow boring stealth mechanics. It was fun for 5 minutes. It has to take it for me. Story telling alone is not enough to justify high 80's for me.

First post nailed it.
I've been feeling like i'm the only person in the world who didn't enjoy Balatro.
Glad it did very well, as it's always cool to see small titles making it big time. But it did nothing for me.

In fairness to it the general opinion out there that I saw put it firmly in the "pretty but shitty" category. Seems like it was rated pretty accurately
Eh, but “shitty” isn’t accurate either, because what it gets right it gets very right! To me, it’s actually sitting a little lower than I’d rate it. A good game for sure, it just needed a bit more variety! Very much how I felt about The Order: 1886.

A button mashing mix of too many already seen gameplay mechanics... but with chinese monsters so it must be awesome
My vote is Wukong as well. Uplifted by newish aesthetic for the console space and on social media for being 'anti-woke.' The game itself has little going for it and has no business being listed among the others.

I haven't played many new games this year but I feel like Dragon's Dogma didn't hit the mark and went awary super fast. Now in GOTY season is nowere to be seen. For a title that had such a wished for sequel it seems like it never got to the point the fans wished for. Maye some DD fans can tell me more, I'd love to read about it.

What I find amusing is the number of who haven't even played their "most overrated" game. How can you even know if it's overrated? Just because it's popular and you're not interested in it? Goodness.

I've honestly enjoyed pretty much every new game I've played this year - including Rebirth, Balatro, Animal Well, Astro Bot, Stalker 2 even with it's problems, and Indy so far. I guess Balatro might be a tad overrated at least for me. I adore the game but it's very simple and more of a great arcade game to me than a GOTY nominee. I liked Animal Well better.

Warhammer Space Marine is the only one I can think of, Wukong was mid but it got 81 metacritic so it was pretty fair.

Wukong. The hype around that game felt very artificial.
That’s because it was bot boosted lol.

I think most overhyped game is stellar blade.
More like stellar barbie simulator 2024.
Just fucking google search jav you fucking weebs

Dragon's Dogma 2

I like it but hate it at the same time. It's so damn unfinished and so disappointingly repetitive and shallow. And yet it's stil at 86 on Metacritic..

You might be right on that - I love parts of it, but other parts are just fucking stupid - the fast travel mechanic, the really buggy quests, the rigmarole when you die in combat (which depending on the fast save can lose you an hour or two of gameplay. Great ideas, but a bad game.

I have put 40 hours in and not finished it as yet, as I was aiming for the plat, but I think I will just plough on instead. Astrobot was an incredible palette cleanser for it - great ideas and a great game.

Don’t get the mentions of Stellar Blade - the scores were not that high and it was a really good game - not great - but really good and very good mechanics (save for the difficulty spike for the last couple of bosses).

It's a card game that's fun for a few hours. one of the best games of the year? well, people have lost their minds.

Games like that and Vampire Survivors say more about the time some of us have to play video games these days more than anything else. Video games journos fall into that category too.

A longing for when you didn’t have to put in 5 hour play sessions to make solid progress in an 80 hour game.

Another vote for Metaphor, at 60 hours in I threw in the towel.

It has the gameplay pace of a sloth. I would "play" it for about 30 to 45 minutes some nights and experience nothing but dialogue. Hideo Kojimas long winded cutscenes have nothing on this game.

It was my first proper experience with an Atlus game so some mechanics were new and interesting but also kinda tedious.

The time deadline is super cool but in practice 50% of your of choices is still just talking to people to make numbers go up. The dungeon crawling is obviously much better but the turn based combat didn't really click with me.

I hear the Persona games are more bloated in this regard so I think it's safe to say they are not for me!

Dragon Quest 3 2D HD is a much superior JRPG

Mouthwashing in that some say it is revolutionary game writing. The game is barely 3 hours long and the gameplay is dull(Forget it being a walking simulator, some of the actual gameplay segments like the sneaking around from a hidden enemy that can end you and make you restart is painful....same with the maze portion which is basically get to a wall and play a game of turn around/quick draw). There might be some hidden messages that I didn't "get" but nothing made me blow my socks off.

1000xResist is a close 2nd but the moments that were pretty jaw dropping were actually good, it's just the map navigating around the main hub wasn't great and the beginning few hours going around the school really could have been left out IMO. It's the Signalis of 2024, it's a solid 7.5/10 game with some big highs but also some big lows and is a bit too overloved.

I mean. Come on. It’s obviously Astro Bot. Sony made a solid platformer with tight gameplay and their fans who have to pretend that they like ‘deep narratives’, over the shoulder, walking, talking, press square to inspect gameplay have gone absolutely wild for it.

That being said, it’s still a 9/10. Just not ‘9.4/10 best game eva!’ like our Sony bros would have us believe.

The most overrated game deserved a 9.0, but got a 9.4? I guess every other review must have been pretty dawned aligned with your score. (Astro Bot is every bit as good as advertised, fyi).

Mine is Echoes of Wisdom. That's a flat out bad game.
