Balatro is some overrated game that I've never even heard of. Huh.

I'm really surprised more people here aren't saying STALKER 2 because both on and off this forum people won't shut up about it.

Dragon's Dogma 1 & 2 are very average games with an insane amount of hype around them considering what they are

I really want to say Alan Wake 2 but that was 2023 DLC was 2024 tho.....most overrated
game of the decade, everything bad about modern video games in a shiny package
Man, I'd consider myself a Remedy diehard, but when I saw that musical scene... I don't even know if I've got the words.

All new Yakuza after part 6 are very average games. They actually took a serious game that raised very serious and adult topics (yes, there was humor, but it just diluted the plot), and turned the series into a complete circus that is impossible to take seriously, and if we are being completely honest, all they are doing now is just milking the brand like a cow =)
Fight me! :messenger_tears_of_joy:
I hope they milk Yakuza: Dead Souls Remake because I would buy it at launch. If you are looking for the old Yakuza style then Judgment duology is where I would recommend turning. The franchise is too long in the tooth to play it straight given its sequential nature.

always chasing the next thrill
Astro bot: It's a good game, but its still basically that packin game with more levels. If we want to give these games a 94 then we need to reevaluate our life choices.

FF7 Rebirth: Mini game simulator. Literally retarded characters. Everyone shits on Veilguard's characters but at least 99% of them were normal. Here, 99% of the people act like they are 5 year old. the open world levels are literally the worst of ubisoft. In fact, it would be insulting to compare them to ubisoft because ubisoft figured this out back in 2009. Combat is the only good thing about the game.

Dragon's Dogma 2: It's the Starfield of this year. I dont think ive played a game where so many different systems all come together to make one of the most boring and flawed games ever. Hunting monsters and dragons with this combat system should not be this boring.

Havent played Balataro or Metaphor but im sure they are overrated too. Just like every single game this gen. Rewarding card games with Goty is just insulting to real games like Space Marine 2 and Silent hill 2.

It's Yakuza, if they made a new map they are going to milk the shit out of it lol.
Personally I liked Hawaii, I think it offered a nice change of scenery for the franchise, and the Hawaii themed jobs were fun.
But the overall story wasn't that engaging, the 2 main villains were very forgettable, most of the twist you could see coming a mile away and I found the whole Kiryu side of the plot (specially around the middle part) kinda tedious and unnecessary.

All that said I still enjoyed the game, still played for like 60 hours and had fun with it. But after the reviews I was expecting more.

I for one am glad to see some push back to the Atlus formula.
Always felt like I was missing something when everyone kept saying Persona 5 is one of the greatest JRPG's ever and I found it pretty mid.
Didn't play Royal though, but I didn't like the original release nearly enough to not only buy it again but spending another 100 hours on it.
Persona 4 and even 3 are way better than 5

As a hardcore from fan, I'd say Elden Ring's DLC. The boss design (mechanic wise) felt poor. I also felt they didn't try as hard @ world design as the base game did.

Obvious answer is Hellblade 2

Game is absolute garbage and received a bunch of “don’t close the studio” pity reviews

Game isn’t anywhere close to an 80, deserves less than half the scores it received

It’s underrated. GOTY for me. Metacritic 73 for a game that people say is their GOTY and won’t shut up about is a joke.
And if it’s rated low because the review code was bad then rate it again after some patching.

You know how it is around here. MicroGaf. Can't say anything bad about certain games.
I accept the challenge :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Balatro - just a time killer, for portable consoles or phones, but not the game of the year.
Metaphor - Basically, it's the same Persona + SMT - but with reduced functionality
Dragon Age The Veilguard - damn, there's not even much room for jokes here, the game itself is a joke...
Star Wars Outlaw - a mediocre open world game with already hackneyed ubisoft mechanics, which was killed by ubisoft itself
Silent Hill 2 - That's the case when the original developers wrote the plot, world, music, monsters, locations, characters for you. You just came, crookedly pulled Unreal 5 and collected all the awards
Hellblade 2 - I thought this forum was for discussing games, I can watch bad arthouse movies on Netflix
Astro Bot - Sony finally did what Nintendo had been doing all their lives, that's why it's game of the year right away, a good kids game but nothing more.
Stellar Blade - An attempt to cross DMС with Souls games, with a rather weak plot, an ordinary action game for a couple of evenings, and how dare they make a game with beautiful characters in 2024
Dragons Dogma 2 - A crooked clone of Monster Hunter but with knights and magic, with a small number of new mechanics and a ridiculously small variety of enemies for such a game
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 - just a buggy first person shooter, with a weak plot, nothing special, plus significantly worse than the original + mods in the gameplay
Wukong - an ordinary third-person tunnel action game with nice graphics, which will most likely be forgotten in a year since it doesn’t really stand out from the rest of such games.
FF7 Rebirth - Everything Nomura touches turns into some kind of weird nonsense. The game is filled with all sorts of senseless nonsense, it is unclear why parts of the story were added or rewritten.

Sorry if I forgot anyone :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Probably Shadow of Erdtree.

As I mention, I gave 10/10 to Elden Ring, but the DLC for me was a mix bag in many levels. Boring boss fights besides one here and there, clone weapons for no reason, really shit storyline. Miquella lore is one of the worst lores I ever read from a souls. When you go back to the base game is clear that the group behind the Elden Ring is not the same that did the Shadow of Erdtree. Maybe they already moved to another project, but the DLC was a huge let down for me.
I prefer stick with the base game and never touch the DLC. I know some folks here love the DLC, but bigger not always means better.

So, Shadow of Erdtree imo is the Most Overrated game of the 2024.
Just the fact that this dumb Geoff changed the rules just to make Shadow of Erdtree a GOTY canditate speaks volumes.

Definitely Wukong. A decidedly average soulslike, sold by many as the second coming, due to some culture war bullshit.

Also, Erdtree was just more Elden Ring. Which is fine, but hardly deserving of the amount of additional accolades piled onto it.

Wukong by a mile. A new_unreal_engine_project.ue5 visual design and system optimisation, with generic souls combat, invisible walls, boring level layout, boss rush difficulty and the artistic taste of a Japanese brothel. 2024 has been a very weak year for this title to be a thing.

This is mine, too.

Stellarblade and Metaphor tied for me.

SB without the controversy would’ve just been a 6/10 dull game. It’s only saving grace is a cool soundtrack. Rest is middling, boring, and whack.

Metaphor, 6/10 for me as well. Beat the whole game but even with a smaller runtime than a persona game it still managed to overstay its welcome. No difficulty, mid ost, and the worst story of any Atlus game. Just keeps going on and on with no twist or turn to its story, and keeps making you think this is the final boss and final area 4 separate times. Could not wait to put this down. :/

I think it's the Elden Ring DLC, it's nowhere near as good as the base game which is already a little bit overrated (only a little). Also, there's no way it should be in the conversation for GotY so there's that.

What do you mean? There was a ton of twist and turns.
None for me. I guess I just knew where the story was going so nothing came as a surprise to me.

Reading this thread though - I change my vote to dragons dogma 2.

What a sad sack of shit that game is.

Ah damn. I had no clue where it was going so I guess that's why I enjoyed it more than you did.
Combat improvements are good but I still prefer persona 3 remake approach and smtv vengeance over metaphor. I like anyone can be any class but the “ultimate classes” for each character defeated the purpose of the system because ideally you want them to get their unique bad ass one.

Dungeons were absolutely awful. Repeat some. Side quests throwaway junk. Some dumb “hard” bosses at the end that didn’t even give great loot since it’s all replaced in final dungeon which defeats the purpose of all item acquisition. Cheese area to level up to max there with anything too.

Story had a potential to do something interesting with the reveal in the dragon tower of what happened to the old world etc but they never did shit with it.

Compared to P3R or SMTV— it’s infinitely worse.

I do agree that repeating the last boss so many times was a bit much, but overall I thought it was great. To each their own.

I’m the outlier. GAF loved it.

All good. 2/3 Atlus games this year were fantastic to me. SMTV I beat/love, and I’ve finally hit the part where persona 3 is starting to cook. It took 20 hours though which is a serious time investment. It’s at the summer break when things finally pick up.

There are a LOT this year op. Basically all the games nominated for goty for starters. I feel like every mid or niche game this year had weird uberfans desperate to tell you how awesome it was, I think it started with Dragons Dogma 2

And one more thing, I think this year we have moved even more into "This game is either Amazing or Garbage" territory. I guess it reflects the increasingly polarized society we live in, but the amount of gamers who want to bandwagon to either heap praise on a game or tear it down based on some fairly minor criteria has become absurd.

I agree, Wukong isn't fun in any aspect imo, combat is atrocious..And i love hack'em slash...
