Double fine, inXile are AAA? I have my doubts there bud. Bethesda not GaaS/MP? Last two games Fallout 76 is GaaS, and Elder Scrolls Blades packed with mtxs.

Single player games will have their place but spending $100M developing a single player game you complete in 20hrs to attract people paying $10 for a month isn't going to work out great or be done too often.

Returnal is AAA? (their game mc 85) ...so is Psychonauts 2 (mc 87). Fallout 76 was born with different intentions from classic fallout and always not having the richest company in the gaming industry behind it. What you usually say does not make sense the service will take all content types ... just like Netflix, Spotify and all other subscription services ... it is the only way to attract and retain a large audience of users. Do you think Microsoft doesn't know that there are a lot of players who prefer single player games? And here you will have Hellblade, Fable, the elder scrolls, Avowed, etc etc etc ...let me also add that single player doesn't mean "cinematic third person action game" we have flight sim, gears of war, halo, forza horizon, psychonauts2 etc etc all these games have a strong single player component

My guess is they bought them for multiple reasons.
- Nadella said gaming will be a key role at developing metaverse platforms. While he also sees games like minecraft and Flight Simulators as a kind of metaverse. So games with big player bases (COD) are good for them.
- With King they bought massive mobile knowledge. With their help, Microsoft could also release its own brands, which have hardly taken place on mobile platforms so far, for more mobile devices.
- Most obvious reason is to push their Game Pass with the new games

Let's be honest here, DC sucks compared to Marvel. Superman and Batman might be really strong IP but it's a pretty shallow well compared to the huge variety that Marvel has. Personally I don't think that Microsoft need to do everything that Sony do and it's good to have differentiators between the platforms. I think they should go after other strong IP outside of the superhero genre that offers something different, something that is more in line with the style of games already on Xbox. Depending on how the new Perfect Dark goes they could maybe go after the 007 IP and maybe do a tie in with that. There are already rumours about Indiana Jones being Xbox exclusive which would be another good IP to have.

Those who are saying that GamePass is not a good fit for a cinematic story driven game are both right and wrong. Sure if you put out a really high production value single game that can be completed in 20/30 hours (Sony style) then that is not a good fit for GamePass. However what you can do with GamePass is go down an episodic route where you have an initial core game that has new episodes every few months, 4 a season. Once there is a decent selection of different areas they could go back and revisit old areas adding new missions into parts of that area previously barriered off. Done right it could be a really good evergreen title that builds in richness over it's lifespan and importantly keeps customers engaged over an indefinite and extended period of time. If you look at Sea of Thieves purely from a single player point of view Rare have kind of drawn up the blueprint for this type of game. When it first came out there was very little content whereas now there is as much single player story driven content as any exclusive Playstation game and it all has a lovely rich and deep lore that they keep building on. Rare have just been slowly adding to the map with new areas, new mechanics, new stories, new enemies and even seamlessly incorporated an existing and very strong IP POTC. If Microsoft play to the strengths of the GamePass model then they could have some really great single player story driven content that keeps existing subscribers engaged but also builds something that grows and entices new members to subscribe.

Eh, I don't know that there is a superhero out there that has the same combination of brand awareness, all-ages appeal, and innately enjoyable travel mechanics as Spiderman. Web-slinging is just too much fun. Should MS really try to counter by locking down Batman?

Plus, they don't need to match Sony's exclusives genre-for-genre to be successful. Honestly, they're better off focusing on their strengths, and if the right hero game happens to come up organically, then they should go for that, whether it be DC, Marvel, or an original character.

As long as we're dreaming though, I want to see a big-budget Daredevil game as a sort of midpoint between Arkham Asylum, Mirror's Edge, and Phoenix Wright.

LOL. Whole genre of american superhero comic books suck badly. Marvel and DC are so occupied with crossovers (which are marketing tools mostly) that they forget about probably most important thing in all. If everyone is special in universe then no one is.
What's unique in Iron Man if Pym exists? How people could be racist against mutants where there is many more people with powers (some of them are even mutants, but not THAT mutants) and they are generally accepted to society?

MS has quite a few single player experiences in the pipeline and have said they want to increase output in that area. There is no real "type" of game that lends itself to GP for first-party studios, instead variety really becomes the name of the game. I think you are confusing first-party with third-party, third-party day one additions may follow a bit of a trend, that's where the "type" of game might matter. Even there, you get a lot of AAA single player content added, just not always on day one.

Naughty Dog are really the only studio who are head and shoulders above other AAA Devs when it comes to creating an engaging narrative.

Wolverine was probably one of the characters insomniac was allowed to choose from, and after working on miles morales, they probably asked marvel if they could do that one too.
Sony can't decide anything, it's marvel's IP and they aren't going to just give one company sole control over their merchandise ever again, so these wouldn't be blanket licenses, so trying to moneyhat marvel's IP would mean they would have to purchase a license for every new game/sequel/dlc whatever, if marvel even wants to give it to them in the first place.
It's not like the movie rights situation where sony only has to make a movie every x amount of years to keep the license, or just toss a big check at marvel and they just get whatever they want, Marvel Games contracts publishers/studios on a case-by-case basis to make games for them, not the other way around.

People keep forgetting it was Marvel that approached Sony about making a game and Sony chose Insomniac. They were allowed to choose any character they wanted and Spiderman was the character they chose. Wolverine was the second character they talked about doing after Spiderman.
