NBC Cancels Hannibal after 3 Seasons. Show will now be shopped around at other venues

I'm so saddened by this. As much as I'd love to hate NBC, they are not in the wrong here. The show does absolutely terrible in the ratings. Any other network probably would have cancelled it after last season.

I actually think Crackle makes the most sense since Sony does have financial stake in Hannibal, but Crackle is so utterly incompetent about everything that I doubt they would be able to get their shit together to actually do something like this. Or afford it.

Incompetent? But they made Joe Dirt 2!

I would be more shocked if someone like Direct TV doesn't pick this up.

NBC cancelling doesn't surprise me because it's NBC, Hannibal is the first thing that network has offered in a long time that had any intelligence behind it but i am not worried because i don't think there is a chance in hell that some other network or platform doesn't snag this up right away. Direct TV for some reason is staying in my head as the place that would pick it up for the full run they wanted but maybe at like a 10 episode order per season.

Why the "fuck you nbc" posts? Shouldn't you be angry with people for not watching the show?

I'll be angry with both, thank you very much.

Failing to see how NBC is at fault here. In fact, I see them being more than fair. They gave it 3 seasons, letting the 3rd season run its course and leaving the door open for them to shop the show around.

Even if the show isn't selling, it would be nice if they could at least give it a handful of episodes to reach an actual conclusion. It's always shit to give something several seasons and then just drop it without a suitable ending :\

I get it when something isn't renewed after a season, but once you renew for two, let alone three seasons, there's an expectation of some kind of ending. The show was valuable enough to a network to renew it, and you've now created plenty of fans that have invested their time in the story and characters. They deserve some kind of conclusion.

The first couple of episodes on s3 have been overly indulgent IMO. It's not a show for network TV at all. Hopefully someone will pick it up however.

Can you guys imagine if HBO picked this up and let Fuller go buttfuck with the content? Lawwwwwd. It'll never happen, but a man can dream.

Yea nothing to be mad about here.

Also, isn't it incredibly odd to announce the cancellation of a show while it's still airing? That's just, well, rude.

Announcing it publicly? Yeah probably. But making the decision now instead of later is good because it gives the creators a chance to shop the show around while this season runs its course.

It's better this way.

First, the network can't just sit idly by while the ratings continue to plummet - it has shareholders to answer to.

Second, it gives the crew time to make a concerted effort to shop around so that next season doesn't start production six months late due to NBC's procrastination.

Only watched the first ep of s3 so far but yeah I noticed it suddenly became very indulgent compared to before. It's kinda amazing it got this far on a network channel at all really. Once it got renewed for s3 though I was pretty sure it would be cancelled, no way it'd go on for a fourth. Still a massive shame though.

God, anyone other than HBO please. Unless there's literally no-one else I would like them to keep it away from them.

Why cancel it? I thought it was doing well?
I guess nbc gonna nbc.

If it's not Law and Order: SVU, The Voice, or America's got Talent, then fuck it, right?
It wasn't doing well, the viewer count has been rapidly dropping throughout the series.

Also, it's easy to say 'fuck NBC', but you have to consider the fact that Hannibal has become a very hard show to sell. It lasted way longer than I expected considering the show is built around the premise of a serial killer and a cast of morally ambiguous characters who are constantly talking in riddles and metaphors.

Nah, this is way better than them announcing it after the season has ended and everyone is expecting a new season. That happened with Carnivàle and it was the worst thing ever.

well, it does suck since NBC was being pretty cool about the show's contents and all

but yeah, someone will pick it up like, tomorrow

Source tells me #Hannibal cancellation may have been a rights issue involving the Clarice Starling character http://bit.ly/1BHLy66

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that there may have been a rights issue at the center of the decision to end the series as Fuller had wanted to introduce Clarice Starling in season four, with the rights to the character previously portrayed by Jodie Foster said to be unavailable.

Yeah. There's cinematic art, then there's artsy-fartsy fluff and this season. I still like it, but if it continued like that I'd lose interest. Still, I think this series could benefit from less is more.

I love the show and I agree with this. This show (and this season in particular so far) has been more visual with dialogue kept to a bare minimum and that just doesn't work for network TV.

Also, they really need to turn up the mix on Mads' voice as I still have a hard time hearing him.

This was expected for me. I was really surprised NBC got in on S3 and have been promoting it as heavily as they are. I don't blame them for canceling it, though. Given the show's unique funding, I'm confident it'll get at least 1 more season elsewhere.

It won't end up on Netflix. Hannibal has its streaming syndication rights with Amazon. When it goes somewhere, it'll go to Amazon.

This was my thoughts as well. Amazon already made the deal for streaming rights, and they clearly have the money to pitch in to actually make S4. It would make a bit of sense to have a big new prestige show to draw attention to their original content as well.

Yeah, it should be known that Fuller glows over how great NBC has been to them. I'm sure it's mostly their attempt to suck up to a potential "prestige" series, given how complex the funding is, but by all accounts, they have been very accommodating to Fuller and his team. They were likely responsible for the heavy procedural element of the first season, but they left the creative reigns almost entirely with him.

God fucking damn. I mean the ratings were low, but why God.

The show can be pretentious though. And I can see why that would turn off many. Hopefully somebody picks it up.

I'm very confused.
The last I heard, MGM had the rights to SOTL and all characters created in that property, while everything before and after was fair game.

Also, Lifetime was trying to get their Clarice series off the ground or something. It be after SOTL and feature only Clarice and orgindl characters.
