After being told to do a shoot at the last minute and having left my camera at home and having to be forced to main the Canon that my job has I can safely just say I'll never be a Canon person. The UI honestly just feels so completely wrong to me. I was able to shoot just fine, but it turns out I shot everything in a a super low res file setting and I didn't even know till I checked my file sized after the shoot. The pictures are like 256kb and nothing on the display actually tells you what format you're shooting in. At least on my Nikon my top display will actually tell you you're shooting in Raw and other stuff. With the 60D I was using you have to menu dive a bit. PS I hate sharing a camera with videographers. The settings are always out of whack when they're done using it.

I have no idea how you managed to do this. Each photo says RAW when shooting in CR2.

I'd like to get an Octobox instead of using the umbrella, but currently this is what I'm shooting with.
Alien bees 800 and 1600. 3 cactus v6 trancievers. 27" white beauty dish. Silver reflective umbrella (my white shoot through umbrella broke).

I still have no idea how I ended up shooting in S3 Jpegs with no raw files. I was wondering why everything looked just straight blurry whenever I zoomed in and it never occurred to me that the file format was tiny. This is mostly why I just prefer using my stuff for shoots and not the jobs camera. I know what I'm looking at and how to quickly fix something that looks out of whack. On a Canon, no idea at all.

Depending on what you need but Adorama has flash sale on bags regularly. I've picked up a couple different ones for different occasions for around 20 bucks each.

I know they are not very pretty, but the amazonbasics camera bags give some really good bang for your buck. My sister-in-law had one with her recently and I was quite surprised how well they are build considering the ridiculous low price.

Thanks, I'll check these out!

I've never used that camera, but my 5D3 and 1DX2 both say RAW when reviewing the image and pressing the Info button.

But the file size/resolution is on you. Anytime you pick up a camera that hasn't already been in your possession you gotta go through those menus! I use my cameras primarily for video, but my dial never leaves M.

It also clearly says Raw when looking on top of the lcd screen and on the back lcd screen.

I really don't understand the complaint.

That is not what the back of the 60D looks like. Unless I have to press the info button to get it to look like that, which I really don't have to do to get my Nikon to tell me that stuff. I don't use the camera that often beyond whatever basic videography stuff I have to do for work. For anything still related I use my Nikon. The Canon I don't touch for...anything to be honest. So I would think me be borderline dumb to what is what on a camera I've used...three times would be understandable. There's a good chance I probably fucked something up just trying to make exposure adjustments on there.

Just a case of unfamiliar camera, no big deal. I don't know my way around a Nikon or a Canon, and others don't know their way around a Sony, so it's just a matter of familiarity.

Pretty much. My job should've told me well in advance that i had to shoot this thing so I could take my camera to work. Not tell me while I was already at work and my camera is like a 4-5 hour commute away. They got pictures...shit they can't really use I bet, but hey maybe they'll remember to give me advanced notice, which is the one thing I was nervous about cause my job is last minute with everything, yet they knew about this thing about a week and a half in advance. They just never lined up a photographer and the person that usually warns me is on vacation.

Anything tbh.

I'll have my family with me so I'm sure they wouldn't mind seeing some pretty locations.

We usually stay over the Medical District since there's a kick-ass Filipino restaurant there but we'll go anywhere really.

so yea the thing is its balls hot outside.

Buuut, there are lots of places to checkout. For nature type stuff Brazos Bend State park south west of houston has lots of trails and lakes and wildlife, alligators and birds mostly.

Memorial park and more specifically the Houston Nature Aboretum is nice as well.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science has a butterfly exhibit you can check out, they have thousands of butterflies in a very humid dome.

Bear Creek Park in West Houston.

There's actually bald Eagles out in Katy Hockley, but you're not likley to see them this time of year.

Elinor Tinsley park has some nice views of downtown Houston skyline, the sun comes up behind the buildings in the morning and the sun sets on them in the evening from this location.

There's lots more places to check out, these were just off the top of my head.

Lmao don't worry about the heat, I'm from DFW and the heat and humidity are all the same no matter where you are in this great state.

Thanks for the suggestions though! I'll take a look at them and decide what we're doing.

We were also thinking about hitting up Galveston but that flesh eating bacteria creeps me out so maybe not lol.

Why is Lightroom (6) so bad with exporting and sorting pictures and keeping/updating my sorting?

It seems like such an easy thing to program 'Update file names accordingly to how pictures are sorted in the export folder'. But no, Lightroom just won't do it. Once you hit export for the first time it's done, unless you delete all pictures from the export folder and then re-add them... which of course means you have to resort them again manually. *sigh*

On that note... why does the flickr web uploader have so many problems uploading all the pictures and not messing up at least once or twice and me having to re-upload those pictures?

After reading this blog post, I know my next display has to be wide gamut. P3 over Adobe RGB preferably, since I take a lot of golden hour shots with reds and oranges. Suddenly I feel like I can't see shit in my photos. Hope the next generation of phones all include such displays.

You mean a Pro2 in the x100 body?

Sure, I'll take that.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
At the 11th hour, I took advantage of the Fuji sale and ordered a 16mm f1.4. I want something wider than my 23, but not sure which one. With a 2-3 month ship time, I said screw it, and ordered the Zeiss 12mm f2.8. $550 brand new on the Amazon marketplace. Should be here in the next week or so. I'll try them both and let go of my least favorite.

Any comments/thoughts between these two?

I love the Fuji build and weather sealing, but not sure if 16mm is wide enough for my sunrise landscapes I love to capture.

the Nikon 300mm f4e is quite amazing. Sharp wide open, but its amazing how small and light it is. I kind of wish i hadn't sold the old 300mm i had just to show photo comparisons.

Who makes the best EN-EL15 batteries for the money? I would imagine OEM Nikon are the best, but is there a better value? I personally used Wasabi brand in Sony and had success, but what is the general opinion? Kastar? STK? Vivitar?

Also, how is Nikon serious with the MB-D12 price? $360 battery grip? Is there a knock-off that works well and is magnesium like the OEM? I see the http://www.adorama.com/inkmbd12m.html "Flashpoint" which is apparently Adorama's house brand and made of magnesium?

I'm in the market for a digital camera, but no idea where to start. All help is appreciated :)

1. What is your budget budget?
$500(but if there's a cheaper option I'm all for that)
2. Main purpose of the camera?
Mainly taking pictures of toys/products. Family use too.
3. What form factor is most appealing to you?
I dont know enough to have an opinion
4. Will you be investing in the camera? (buying more stuff for it later)
Yes, and I'd like it to last a few years.
5. Any cameras you've used before or liked?
My dad has a Sony ILCE-6000LB Alpha A6000 that I've used for products and the images look great.

A6000 with kit lens, and pick up an old Canon FD 50mm Macro lens. Kit lens for general purpose, then the Macro lens for toys/products.

Sony 50mm F1.8 or the Sigma 60mm F2.8 for my A6000?

The seem to be similar-ish prices and wanting to take more portraits.

Here's what I'm achieving with my Sigma 30mm F2.8 in terms of portraits: https://www.flickr.com/photos/125244042@N08/

Oh, and what are good resources for portraits? I need more inspiration.

Asking this again for more opinions.

I'm mainly thinking of getting the Sigma because I plan to get the 19mm as well and I thought it'd be good to have some uniform thing going on so I can use the same filters for all of them.

The Sony is twice as bright, has OSS, and more importantly for portraits, much more bokeh. The Sigma has a minor improvement in sharpness at the pixel peeping level. If price is more or less equal, I'd say the Sony 50 is a no brainer.

I don't have any experience with either lens, but if you're looking for a portrait lens I'd go with the Sony. They're both decent focal lengths for portraiture, but the wider aperture of the Sony will allow for shallower depth of field if you really want to isolate your subject, and it'll give you a bit more latitude to work with available light.

eh - its just a different system you aren't used to. Not better or worse, just different. Bit harsh to throw you in at the deep end though

Yeah I'm definitely not used to Canon. I'd have to use a Canon a lot before I ever thought about using it for a shoot as my main camera. Not knowing how to do certain things just makes me nervous and just messes with my work flow during a shoot.

so no one wants a 77mm UV filter, thats kind of a big filter you can use step rings to use on smaller lenses or whatever. Its free!

Just came home with a Sony - Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm and 55-210mm Lenses - And have it charging battery so i can play with it.

but while at the store I was also enamored by the
Fujifilm X-T1 with 16-50mm OIS II and 50-230mm OIS II lenses

No I worry.... did I make the wrong decision?

Yes I have trouble making choices ..lol

Anyone have a good pro/con for me ? camera decision gives pro's and cons but they are mostly spec-list based. Did anyone use both?

Also from the manual it seems battery drain is real with these mirrorless camera's... how is it in practice?

I think the only question you need to ask is if you shoot mostly Jpeg then Fuji is the way to go. Otherwise, the raw files aren't that much different once you know how to deal with each sensor. X-T1 is still a 'higher class' camera -- one with many more physical controls. Fuji does have larger selection of quality lenses. Sony's focus is on FF so likely you will have to rely on 3rd party for crop lenses, but those are also cheaper. AF performance is likely a bit better on Sony. I'd bring 2 extra batteries with you. Most of the days I can go through 2-3 batteries on MILC while not draining one on my DSLR...

If anyone is interested, I'm downgrading my bag so I'm selling my Everyday Peak Design Messenger Bag in brown. I posted about it in the Buy/Sell/Trade thread but I figured I would put a heads up here. I haven't used the bag very much, it's in basically brand new condition. amazing camera bag, but I don't have as much equipment anymore so it's really useless for me. I'll give you a good deal, PM me if interested.

Thanks for the info. I mostly shoot raw or jpeg+raw myself.

I am almost thinking about getting the X-T1 as well so I can compare 1-1 and return my least fav.. lol
but lets see how I like the a6000 first.

I love what Fuji is doing. My X-T1 has been an absolute beast as I've traveled the country and beyond. Their lenses are fantastic - both in build quality and optics, and the variety of quality primes are fantastic for such a new mount.

I've been watching the information on the X-T2 slowly trickle in for the last few months, and the reveal yesterday has been exciting. But man am I torn.

On one hand - the X-T2 looks to be just about the perfect mirrorless. Great build. Great features. Great lenses. Great processor. Great RAW (RAF). It's weather sealed. It shoots 4K/24+. It has an 11fps burst. Supposedly pretty great AF with a bajillion points. An articulating screen. An even better EVF. Dual UHS-II SD support. I mean - what doesn't the camera do.

But on the other hand, to get the full feature set out of the camera, it's another $330 for the grip. Another ~100+ for two batteries. On top of an already expensive body. Going all in - without even a lens - is $2,000+. And at $2,000+, you start knocking on the door of Sony's full frame options. And even still, you don't get certain things that I'd really love to have from the X-Pro 2, such as the higher res screen which is critical for reviewing your shots while traveling, IMO.

I, personally, wouldn't select a Sony over a Fuji. I love what the former is doing - and their manufacturing and tech are really fantastic. But the feel of the Fuji - the manual dials and the beautiful image processing - will keep me on their team for the foreseeable future.

Anyway, just thinking out loud. Not even sure I have a point. Right now, honestly, I could see myself trading up for a used XP2. Seems finding one for about $1400 is pretty easy. $1300 should be do-able in the next month as more people plan to switch.

I'm no Fuji owner, but thinking of the question of A6000 or X-T1 I thought of how subjective that was.

Not in a "The Sony is superior, but some choose the Fuji for the feels", but because they're so different. The lens lineup is also really different with a bunch of f1.4 primes from Fuji while Sony doesn't have a single zoom brighter than f4 (not counting the FF GM lenses).

I wish they had a traditional bayer sensor (from what I've seen x-trans can smudge fine details and some raw processors really hate the files), but if I were in the market and didn't go full frame I'd probably choose Fuji over Sony. I like dials and as pointless as it sounds I like a good looking camera. Seeing a pretty film camera on the table immediately makes me wanna shoot with it.

I've always been a prime shooter, so I naturally gravitate toward the Fuji.

For your last point - I don't think it's pointless at all. The aesthetics of a camera naturally derive from the ergonomics: tactile switches, physical dials, etc. And caring about your camera is pretty natural - it is an accessory that will be with you all the time. And it's not terribly unique, even if few will admit it: it's been said in the past, but look at how much more active this gear thread is than the actual photography thread.

They seem really well liked by their owners. A used D700 is almost more expensive than a used D600. When I noticed how cheap the 5D was I thought to myself that maybe the D700 was also cheap, but it was three times the price :p
The lowlight is still impressive (especially for 2009) on that 12MP sensor.

See this is what I was experiencing when I picked up the fuji.. it felt really great, but now knowing for sure about the mirrorless, and having to pick one right then ( long story) I swayed to sony as it was my initial choice and speclists.

to think about it I had the same when I chose my first nikon dslr over canon, it just felt right to me .. then I did not look at the specs .. never regretted it.

I don't know ..ya'll making me second guess hahaha
in the end I will have to keep that quote on page 1 in mind I guess.

Hey guys, My wife and l share a Sony RX100 at the moment but l recently took early retirement so l plan on getting out and about a lot more.

Which brings me to upgrading to a full dslr, we've kinda narrowed it down to either the Nikon D5500 or Canon 760D (body only).

Not sure about the lens yet but if you guys want to shoot me some thoughts/opinions that would be great!

Probably when Sony is willing to license out FF MILC sensors, unless someone else steps up to the game.

pretty sure any sensor can be used MILC its just a matter of creating the mount, and lenses based off of the mount distance. Which is no easy task for sure.

that said Nikon ain't going to do it till its too late. They're run by a bunch of monkeys.

Anyone sightsee with a DSLR without looking like an ass? I've got a D5100, and have had it for a couple of years now, but never take it anywhere. I've got a Lowepro Sidewinder, but perhaps I need some sort of side strap or something.

A mirrorless would be nice, but I want to keep using this as it was a gift.

I bought a refurbished 100-400 L II lens from Canon's website. This is a $2100 lens new on Amazon, but cost me less than $1600 during one of Canon's 15% off refurbished promos last month. It looks brand new in general, but there is a tiny scratch in the interior of the glass. I doubt it will have any impact on image quality. Normally I would return it and ask for replacement. The problem is that this lens is not in stock anymore so they told me they would give me a refund and I would have to re-order it when Canon restocks their store. Based on past trends from browsing canonpricewatch.com, I would have to wait several months just for a restock, and it could take 6 months before the lens is in stock at the same time as a promotion.

I'm inclined to just keep the lens and deal with it since the price was so good. Any thoughts?

I hate to break it to you but the camera isn't what makes you look like an ass, if you do look like one that is.
