I returned a lens to the same store a second time because I found it elsewhere for 50$ cheaper (for both lenses). Am I bad for this? 50$ is quite a lot to save and saving a total of 100$ so far seems like a lot.

It's your money dude. Unless the item you returned was in worse condition then I see no problems in returning because you found a better deal.

A Mamiya RB67 w/ 75mm 3.5 Sekor K/L popped up on Craigslist in the price range I have been looking at. I want to go take a look at it in a few days. Anything in particular I should be looking at with these cameras mechanically? It looks its age on the outside. Any common points of failure to note?

Possibly looking to get my daughter a dslr - she currently has a cheap canon P&S. One of her friends has a Nikon D300 so she doesn't seem put off by the size, but I don't know the best route to go
- used canon body
- new low end canon body
- mirrorless

Thinking a used body will save me money that can be spent on lenses, but I don't know how far back you'd realistically go and still get good results? Alternatively something like the 1100d seems affordable and doesn't compromise too much on features

Mirrorless I was thinking for size/convenience plus she could then (maybe...) borrow my m4/3 lenses.

Any thoughts? Anyone with kids that use dslrs?

Or you could just get her a Nikon D300. They're not that expensive and it sounds like you guys don't have any invest into Canon's lense ecosystem. D300 is still a decent starter camera.

If you already have micro 4/3 gear why not just get a used E-M10 or E-M5.

I've been in the canon ecosystem before so would naturally lean that way. I know how the cameras work and handle, and which lenses are good. Plus if(when) I go back to dslr I'd go canon

And if you are interested in video at all, you should be looking at Canon, Sony, or Panasonic. Canon particularly has lots of lenses that are video friendly.

Their new 80D is a fantastic camera for video.

Noob here. Is this crosshatching on the Sony A6000 normal? Is the camera doing something that I'm missing? Photos come out fine. Apologies for the blurry photo I was holding my phone while holding the camera up.

Yeah it's a feature. Blown highlights indicator. Quick googling says the name is 'Zebra' mode.

Yeah, that's it saying that the exposure is being blown.

Do note, that it's not *entirely* accurate. Like with focus peaking and the histogram, it's based on what's being displayed on the screen, which is affected by the different style profiles and screen settings.

It's kinda stupid that it's dependant on that but whatevs.

Make sure you turn on focus peaking btw.

I think the original purpose of zebras were as a guide for video exposure. Set to ~70% the zebras should appear on the face of a white person.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Hey all! I was asking for advice on a tripod a few days ago, and there just happened to be a ~3 day sale at Adorama for something very similar to the Manfrotto I was considering. Managed to snag this Manfrotto 190Go! Carbon Fiber tripod with ballhead for $270.

http://www.adorama.com/BGMK19GC4BBH.html

Not necessarily the head I wanted (har har), but easily the cheapest I've seen a name brand CF travel tripod go for in the last year of casually looking. Since the sale hit RIGHT as I had determined I'd pull the trigger soon, it seemed like a no brainer.

A little heavier than I wanted. Would have preferred clasp legs. But all things considered, I don't think I was gonna do better anywhere else under $300 for a long time. I'll let people know what I think of it in a couple months after I hit up San Antonio and Colorado for some personal travel.

Just ordered the body a6300 from Best Buy. I'm planning on recording videos and portrait photography for the most part. I'm trying to keep my budget under 1k for the lens. Any suggestions on what I should get and any additional must have accessories?

You might as well get macro lenses for all shooting situation if having flat field and sharpness is that important.
All testing is done wide open. Really impressive how sharp they are at f/1.4. I wonder how night photography is. Sounds like minimal smearing of light points.

That sag in the mid section and astigmatism is a little disappointing though. If money and size had been no concern I think I would have preferred the Otus or Sigma for being more even. The 10lp/mm though makes it look like contrast was a high priority because It's the only lens that doesn't drop under 0.9.

Just a questions. For the people here who own the Fuji X-T1, what is your opinion of XF18-135mm lens and also XF35mm f2 lens? They is a sale of the X-T1 as the X-T2 is coming out soon (or already out if you're in Asia) and they is a bundle sale with those two lens. Just need some opinion about this as I never test them before except heard the X-T1 is a great camera to take pics in jpeg out from the box (I am a Sony guy here).

Hi GAF, a total noob to photography..

I cannot narrow down to the compact digital camera I want for the budget I have for the life of me,

So far I really like these two, but both lack features I really want ...

http://tinyw.in/j43q

http://tinyw.in/2EPS

Tha Canon lacks 4K video among other neat features the Panasonic LUMIX has.

Panasonic LUMIX is almost the perfect camera for my needs, accept it lacks the tilt/swivel LCD for selfies, that seems like a deal breaker to me.

So can anyone recommend me the perfect camera between these two? Is there a Canon model very similar to the G7X that can also do 4K video at 30fps, with decent stabilization, and has cool post focus and burst features?

I may just settle with the G7X and sacrifice the 4K, but I don't know, really at ends here. And I need a camera ASAP for my vacation nest week.

My budget is 550 to 750 US dollars .

Thanks s much for the recommendations in advance.

Anyone else with a D500 having trouble importing raw images into Lightroom? It seems like I've updated everything but I still get an error every time.

Alternatively, is there a better photo management program on mac than Lightroom?

I've gotten into the habit of actually just dragging my files from the card directly onto the hard drive and then I import the folder into Lightroom, it's actually quicker that way. Granted I don't have a D500, but that's how I've been doing it for what seems like 2 months. Lightroom has been acting fucking weird lately.

Yeah, I guess that's my plan from here on out as well.

Didn't really look into all the details except the listed specs, I'd choose the much brighter lens in G7X over 4k video. Is 4k that important? I can't imagine why I personally would need that resolution for videos I'd probably watch a couple times. But I'm not a video person, I still leave mine at 720p.

The 35mm f2 is an excellent lens. Can't really go wrong with that choice.

The 18-135mm is good if you need an all in one lens. I do mainly landscape and occasionally use it when the weather doesn't look to be great and don't want to change lenses in the field. This one probably isn't considered one of Fuji's best but the range really is convenient and I don't think it's bad for my use.

If your using the zoom normally and the prime for lower light situations it should be a good combo.

Is that the only choice they are offering? If you don't need the weather resistance and can live with less zoom the other kit lens, 18-55mm is considered slightly better although I don't have this one to test.

I wouldn't touch the 18-135 unless I was in a huge pinch. 5.6 is going to be way to slow for anything indoors. Outdoors, it would be good in daylight. Maybe it'll work great for you - it gets pretty decent reviews from both professional critics and B&H/Amazon reviews. I just don't think it's Fuji's finest work, nor do I have a lot of need for such a lens.

The 35 f2 is fantastic. Really, really good. It's definitely one of Fuji's cheapest lenses, but it doesn't matter - anyone would tell you it can respectably have a place on your camera.

Looking for recommendations for a camera strap for a vintage rangefinder camera.

I've got a Canon P and am looking for a strap that would match the old-school feel of the camera.

There are several interesting options here (like the Ceclia, Tap & Dye, and Yb straps) and curious if anyone has a similar camera and would recommend either one of these, or something else to look into.

I looked into getting a 7100/7200 awhile back, but then I realized barely any of my lenses have weather sealing on them. Any of you know of a good dry bag/weather sealed pouch for a camera?

I'd like to be able to shoot in the rain, snow, or any other weather condition that could be problematic for a D3300. I'd like to get a bag where I could manipulate the controls, look through the viewfinder with ease, and adjust the zoom of my lenses.

Just bought myself the 16-70 F4 Zeiss for my A6000. Felt like the right lens for travel.

I own an A7S but hardly ever use it for anything outside of cinema or studio conditions. The only full frame zooms I have are a Canon 24-105 L series (doc lens) and the kit FE 28-70. Both don't get terribly wide on the A600.

I DID have an A7RII for a work trip to Singapore last month that I tossed the 24-70 FE Zeiss on, but I wasn't hiking or anything with that.

A plastic bag and rubber bands works in a pinch. You can Google for Rain Sleeves. They range from cheap plastic bags with strings to fancy, heavy duty rain cover. Condensation is potentially more problematic with cheaper, simpler plastic bag solutions since they don't insulate from external temperature change as much but they are more agile.

Thoughts on the Canon EOS 6D, for a beginner to intermediate?

Id be mainly using it for stills, not much video id say.

It would be my first proper SLR and been wanting to get one for a while for my travels, and came across this, Canon EOS 6D SLR with 24-105 mm STM Lens Kit, in a like new open box on amazon warehouse for ~£350, so approx $450.

Is this honestly a good deal? The RRP for the camera with that lens on amazon is £1500, but im not sure if RRPs are trustworthy.

Any info welcomed, thanks.

That's an absurdly good deal. Double check Amazon's return policy for warehouse purchases, just in case it's a dud, but if it's a genuine like new 6D with the 24-105 L lens, then £350 is a bargain for it.

Oh good to hear then. Well, as with anything on the warehouse, theres always the chance it will arrive completely wrong condition that it was described, or the person who possibly sent the back did a bit of fraud and swapped it out with a dud/broken model, but hopefully that wont be the case, as it hasnt happened me so far after buying many things off the warehouse.

Ill put it through some testing when I get it and hopefully alls good, and ill be able to find out if its a genuine.

Amazon Warehouse is awesome, it's completely changed how I look at used items. Got my 50mm Prime from them most recently, my fault for not realizing it wasn't an AF-S lens. In perfect shape otherwise.

I've bought laptops, consoles, handhelds, a phone among other things off of Amazon used. Never a bad experience.

Holy shit that's a good deal. Even sub £800 for a used 6D is a good deal.

Go for it if it's legit. You'll make a profit selling it used if you don't like it.

Would a polarizer filter not pick up my reflection in a photo of a display case similar to this one if I was standing right in front of it?

Got my A6000 and an SEL55210 from there for a great price. Also cell phones, a sound bar, etc etc. It's the best.

Would this be a bad time to jump on an X-T1 or an X-T10? Jumped into a black hole of mirrorless research the other day and was thinking of jumping in before I go on my next trip at the end of the month.

But with X-T2 and Photokina both next month, wondering if it's better to wait and see regarding new models or potential price drops (due to X-T2 release)?

My initial plan (as an existing Canon T3i user) was to wait and see if Canon was going to go all in on the mirrorless game this year, but even if they make a big splash it might be a while before we see the new models / lenses in stores.

Camera GAF, I need to decide if I should sell my FE 28-70 (A7 kit lens).

My current lenses:
  • Rokinon 14mm F 2.8 FE
  • Sony 16-70 F4 OSS (APS-C, effectively 24-105mm)
  • Sony 20mm F2.8 (APS-C, effectively ~35mm)
  • Rokinon 35mm t/1.5 FE
  • Sony 55mm F1.8 Zeiss FE
  • Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS
  • Sony 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 FE OSS

My camera bodies:
  • A6000
  • A7S

I actually boxed up my 28-70 for Amazon trade-in today but got cold feet. I pretty much use my A7S for cinematic purposes, leaving the kit lens as an enabler for point-n-shoot walkabouts only. Is it worth $200 Amazon credit to keep it just in case? Any thoughts?

If you don't wanna get rid of it, then why not get rid of the other 28-70? You have the spectrum covered with other lenses and you have a Sony version of the same lens. You don't need all those.

Edit-- or do you only have the one on the list? I guess I was confused, wouldn't expect someone to list it twice.

Either way, you have the spectrum covered with other lenses. Go nuts.

Sorry, yeah- I only own one 28-70 and it's the FE.

Thinking of getting a Sigma 30mm f2.8 as the first lens for my A6000. Definitely a beginner purchase but I'm eyeing that and the Sony 55-200mm.

Anyone have any experience with the Sigma?

The Sigma 30mm 2.8 is a great lens; probably unbeatable in its price range.

The new sigma 30 mm 1.4 is also nice, but costs $350-ish and is larger than Sony's 35 mm 1.8... which, so far, seems to be the superior lens for the price.

If you want a telephoto lens, I would look into Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 as another choice. Would throw in Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 (the silver version) but that is way over your budget based on the lens you're looking.
