The Wide 9 can be very effective if you have great defensive line. The Lions started using it as soon as we drafted Suh, because Suh's pressure up the middle focuses more attention on him, thus freeing up the defensive ends to make plays. Corey Williams and now Nick Fairley are damn good DT's as well.
The Eagles killed any chance they had to be a decent defense when they wasted $100 Million on Nnamdi and DRC.
Memo to NFL GM's around the league: You don't spend that much money on a DB when you have a shit defensive line, and shit linebacking core.
A DB will only be as good as the pressure the front 7 put up. That's why the Lions have been able to get away with such a mediocre secondary, because the defensive line puts so much pressure.
That $100 Million the Eagles spent could've been used to shore up the offensive line or add more playmakers on the defensive line.
tl;dr Don't spend money on DB's if you have a shit defensive line.
