the two times bowser was playable one had some eldritch abomination eating up the world because of some romeo and juliet plot, and the other involved some body snatcher shit and really odd fetishes

Because it's a terrible name and the Japanese name is better.

the naming convention is weird when localizing

Magikoopa for instance is a race name and the wizard's name is Kamek, but in Japan both race and character name is Kamek

Koopa in Japan apparently is not the race name as it is Bowser's name, but rather Turtle Tribe, and the various koopas have their own names
