Nintendo Life: It's Official, Switch 2 Joy-Con Will Not Feature Hall Effect Sticks

Waiting for 8bit do to release their third party controller. Or better yet, patch Ultimate so it's compatible with NS2 and I don't have to shell out for a new controller.

Nintendo could release the best controller they’ve ever made and I’d still buy an 8BitDo controller for it after having used my Ultimate 2 for the past couple of weeks. Incredible feeling controller.

Seriously how much do these hall effect parts cost them ordered in volume? How can you cheap out this hard?
The opportunity cost in putting in hall effect/TMR is far too great.

let's say they sell 100 million Switch 2s in its lifetime. Putting in regular drift-prone sticks, if we could assume about a conservative 50% of people will experience drift at some point and those users are forced to purchase a new pair of joycons @ $90, that's an extra $4,500,000,000 ($4.5 Billion) in sales.

If they put in non drift-prone sticks, and 50% of customers weren't forced to purchase a new pair, the cost of that decision is $4.5 Billion.

Yeah, fuck these greedy bastards.

Ultimate is the best 💪 blows Nintendos pro controller out of the water (and that one is pretty damn good too).

None of the first party's will ever use hall effect. Don't like it? Buy a third-party controller with hall effect and they still make their percentage/license fee.

I don't care as long as fixes the drift issue.
Yeah it remains to be seen on whether this solution will address the issue, if it doesn't, then yeah Nintendo definitely deserves shit for this. Considering how much I am sure Nintendo ate in repairs, and the shit they caught for how frequently the Joycons shit out, I would be surprised if the Switch 2 Joycons are anywhere as bad. Guess we will see if drift issues start to pop up a few months after release.

Nintendo is gonna eat so much shit if these joysticks start drifting lol.

Only reason I haven’t bought one for my switch is the switch 2 releasing soon. I nabbed my Ultimate 2 for my pc and haven’t looked back. Incredible feeling sticks, sublime triggers. I just need to figure out how to do the back buttons but I’m in no rush.

Doesn't matter if Hall or not if the drift is no longer an issue.

Hall Effect sticks didn't increase accuracy or anything in terms of how an analog stick worked, just removed rubbing parts so that things like drift didn't really happen.

So I never cared if it used Hall or not, just if the drift issue is fixed, if it isn't, well they'll be wasting a lot of money repairing controllers again, maybe use hall in the repairs.

Interesting how they explain away the increase in price of the new Joy-Cons. No IR camera anymore, still old analog stick tech, more powerful rumble… and a nice boost in price.

I get some people do not mind paying but the fans who pitch them as consumer focused when people are nickle-and-dimed constantly does. It seem like it…

The reason is likely simple repairs are costing them less than the amount of new controllers they sell (outside the EU and even inside, some people have little patience/do not want to stay without controllers).

$89.99/£74.99.

Thanks, wondering if I should buy the Pro controller or this adapter thing. I wonder how the haptics translate over if I use a dual sense?

The battery life on the switch pro controller is nice

Does that adapter work with the pulse headphones too?

Are you already telling me that the Switch 2 version of NEXTGEN games are not going to look the same as the PS5 version 😂😂😂 But a few months some of you were laughing when we said that Switch 2 was going to be a PS4/PS4pro in terms of power… Also NO nextgen games for Switch 2… What happened? Are you moving the goalpost too like James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford 😂😂

This whole conversation boils down to one thing:

Did Nintendo solve stick drift?

If yes, we have no problems. If no, holy shit Nintendo… I’m gonna lose my mind.

Looks like another Nintendo generation of Docked only with an 8bitdo ultimate for me.

What's the difference between 8bitdo ultimate, 2.4G edition, and ultimate 2, ultimate 2C, etc.

Have like half a dozen or more different models, and not super clear what the difference is or if there's a comparison chart

look, if they want to continue to have to repair every single joycon for eternity instead of just adding something to prevent that, it's their loss.

Nintendo still has to repair every single joycon stick even if they are out of warranty in the EU, that can't be financially insignificant
What a cop out. It’s not just Nintendo’s loss, owners have to send their shit in every time stick drift kicks in?

I really wish fans would acknowledge Nintendo’s anti-consumerism with the Switch 2 instead of slurping up the bad news they keep sending their way. Things don’t change for the better if you are constantly settling for poor products.

Disappointing, but I have controllers with no hall effect that has worked well for over 10 years, so we just gotta hope they figured out a better way to build them.
Besides a couple Xbox 360 controllers, I've never had drift in any controllers for close to 40 years.

But not surprised that Nintendo went the cheap route. Hall sensors can't be that expensive.

Not every single one. Only those who realize they can have them fixed and actually go about getting them fixed.

It's probably a lot fewer than you think and is offset by the number of people just buying a new fully priced set of Joycons.

1st gen Ultimate doesn't have hall effect. The newer version 2.4G does and comes with dock with (350hz polling iirc). 2C is the new version with 1K polling rate two more shoulder buttons, no dock. Ultimate 2 is the latest release with TMR sticks (basically an improved hall effect sensor), with same 2C specs plus hair trigger toggle + dock.

no it is Nintendo's loss because I will absolutely not buy any additional official joycons and will instantly switch to third party ones, which are already announced.
and everyone shoukd do the same
