Switch 2 mouse controls look even more certain in Nintendo’s latest video

None of that was successful??

Analog controls have been adapted by every controller since. Before that, the same was true with Nintendo's d-pad.

I'm pretty sure rumble has been adopted too, as well as "HD-rumble".

The DS gimmick was extremely successful and it went on to be the best selling handheld and second most successful console overall of all time.

The Wii with its motion controls dominated both PS3 and Xbox 360 that generation and led to Sony and Microsoft making their own copies, albeit to much less success.

You really want to die on the hill that Nintendo, of all companies, doesn't innovate. Videogames wouldn't be anywhere near where they are today without Nintendo's "gimmicks".
The fact that you are ignoring i talked about analog shows me that you are a little bit blind or illiterate. What is the part of 'gained traction' that was not clear? Can I play a 3DS game on switch? The anwser is no, because dual screens did not gain traction. Can i use IR sensor on other VGs than wii? No, because only wii had it (and it's a pity, IR aiming is SO good :-D). I can tell with some certain because i HAVE some nintendo hardwares. But it does not matter, block.

This is how you will control Mario in the new game. Mouse controls.
You've heard of Cat Mario, now get ready for Mouse Mario

GAF is serious business.

Part of me thinks Nintendo sees this less as full blown mouse and more as new ways to play some Mario Party mini-games.
I definitely think that's the case, I'm sure they have some wacky concepts in mind outside of just using it as a cursor.

That said I think they're going to utilize it pretty heavily, at least early on, as mouse controls. Having re-watched the Metroid Prime 4 trailer several times I find it pretty interesting that there's several sections where you trace patterns etc.

Of course that works with analog sticks as well, but that kind of gameplay just feels like such an obvious thing to do with this kind of feature.

IT could be an option but that stuff works with gyro and stick as you said. And the mouse thing...probably not conducive to couch play and won't be part of handheld play.

Yeah, to me it doesn't feel like a feature that'd work very well nor be all that useful tbh. But I'd be happy for Nintendo to prove me wrong.

If both joycons have a cursor, we might see true dual wielding in an FPS. It should work pretty well. Left analog for movement, then individually aim both guns by moving the joycons cursors. We could question the difficulty of that, but I think people will be able to do it.

Hopefully they don't shoehorn the mouse into games that don't need it, nothing as irritating as a new Mario or Zelda game, 99% of it being played with the joycons and then the continuity of it is interrupted by have to navigate some obstacle or level by removing the joycons and using a messy mouse controller on your lap or arm rest of the sofa.

If it is going to be utilized it should be all or nothing that the entirety of a game is to be played with it.

Mario party will have mini-games which require it. Maybe not in the main game, but similar to the flying bit in the recent game.

I would say motion controls gained traction given the extent of their use and popularity on Switch.
