In a perfect world, The Substance would sweep

Edit: on a more serious note, I need to see Nosferatu. I’m guessing I’ll end up ranking it above The Substance. Big Eggers fan.
In a perfect world, Nosferatu would also make BP. But between the two films, the Academy is slowly but surely coming around on horror

Wicked? Is it that good? And best picture? Wow.

also dune 2 for best picture? I didnt think it was THAT good.
I certainly do - and I think it deserves a lot more recognition than it's gotten here. Rebecca Fergusson as Lady Jessica was legit, the editing was top tier, screenplay did the impossible, Han Zimmer's score is iconic, and Villeneuve continues to prove he's amongst the best living directors in the business.

Never thought I would see Ariana Grande nominated for an Oscar but here we are. 😄 Haven’t seen most of these films but suspect Demi Moore might be taking home one. Everyone keeps talking about her and that movie.

In 2009, in an attempt to bring more casual viewers to watch the show, they bumped best picture nominees from 5 to 10, with the idea they could could throw in some box office mega successes, knowing full well they had no shot of winning, but as something casual movie goers could root for. Why that year? Avatar.

Dune 2 to win please.
I liked the substance, but I do think it's been over rated a tad. It felt more like a dual protagonist movie and with what happens it feels like screen time as Demi is less than what it is. Also I think the last quarter jumps the shark tbh.
I actually thought Cynthia did a good job in Wicked.
Seems a bit underwhelming from that list really

I’ve still to see three of the Best Picture nominees. I was meant to be seeing The Brutalist today but have had to delay that until tomorrow.

Challengers not getting a nomination for Best Original Score is the biggest surprise for me. I had expected that to be the favourite to win. I guess it being electronic based may have counted against it with the average age of the academy being pretty old.

Looking at this list you’d think it was a bad year for movies.

The box office list for last year paints a very different picture when it comes to what was popular.

The Oscars aren't about what was most popular so it's not trying to paint the same picture as the box office.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Emilia Perez is fucking trash. If that's wins it's Crash 2.0 all over again.

Trans and Mexican people hate the movie the director didn't need to research about Mexico because he "knew enough about Mexico".

Wicked was really good. Saw it with my family, and my wife cried during every big musical number. It’s very emotional.

Ariana Grande deserves the nod for supporting actress. I’ve only ever seen her in Sam & Cat, where she had an awful helium voice, but in this she’s improbably great.

So the question becomes can Wicked save this from being the least viewed show in the event's history because that lineup is absolutely dire.

I thought she was really good in it too. I wouldn't be surprised if she won it. Isabella Rossellini winning would be nice, her role in Conclave is a lot smaller than Grande's in Wicked but it'd be cool to see her recognised like that.

Don't films have to be released in cinemas in order to be eligible for the Oscars? I noticed Wallace and Gromit is nominated for best animated film, but that was the BBC's big Christmas show on TV. Those things never play in cinemas, they're only ever broadcast on the BBC (again, and again, and again).

(I fucking despise Wallace and Gromit.)

Netflix, which has rights to it outside the UK, arranged a limited theatrical run for it so that it would be eligible.

It's hard to believe how bad those lists are. It's impressive an entire industry was abducted and destroyed in one decade.

All I've seen out of any of that is the Wallace and Gromit film that was on, on Christmas day and it's not Oscar worthy, just a mildly amusing obvious sequel.

What a weak year for movies I must say.

Agreed. I highly enjoyed Anora and that’s the only one I’ve seen from 2024 that I think is best picture/best director calibre. I am seeing the Brutalist tomorrow and have high hopes for that one.

I've only seen one clip from Emilia Perez and it's probably the worst thing I've ever seen.

What a contrast with "Better Man", a movie that people immediately wrote off because it was a Robbie Williams biopic with a monkey as the main character.

So, Villeneuve gets nothing for Dune and Emilia Perez is almost on par as the most nominated film of all time? Social Media going wild over the Dune snub. People really don't care about Emilia Perez, but the Academy really wants it to win big. Dune didn't even get nominated for costumes.

You can't take the Oscars seriously anymore. Fuck the Oscars. This shit is corrupt as fuck. More than ever before.

Interesting that Alien Romulus got nominated for best visual effects. I guess it had mostly good cgi but that deepfake wasn't.

Emilia Perez is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. It’s remarkable how the film has brought together people on both the left and right in their hatred for it and rightfully so. It’s a case of the academy patting themselves on the back for nominating something they see as progressive while both the Mexican and trans communities the film depicts have been calling out the problematic aspects of it.

All of the music is horrible, but somehow it has two nominations for Best Song. There’s a lot of “talk singing” that is both painful and hilarious. The Sex Change Operation song that someone posted earlier in the thread feels like something out of South Park and it deserves all of the mockery I’ve seen everywhere. I only recommend people watch this trash just to they can witness a disaster happening before their eyes.

Sad part is I can see it sweeping the Oscars. The 13 nominations it has received is ludicrous. Otherwise, I liked most of the nominations and I’m thrilled to see The Substance get the recognition it deserves.

They all still going with their virtue signalling and claiming their $250,000 goodie bags while peoples houses, businesses and lives have been destroyed in LA because of the fires?

Suppose I’ve asked a stupid question.

Can't believe it's still a thing where our subjective Idols come together and cerkle jerk each other in their total disconnected perspective with real world and simultaneously having covert group vs group friction/concurrention a and have to play the part to remain part of this weird AF cult/circle there in.

They can't really win here. If they turn it into some big charity gala this year, it will never be enough because it's still celebrating a celebrity aristocracy who will always be far removed from ordinary people.

If they abandon their overbearing inclusivity initiative and select nominations solely on merit (or lobbying from studios), they'll be back to where they were a few years ago, with people on the verge of boycotting it due to a lack of diversity.

I get your point about the goody bags and the whole thing being a farce in general, but in regards to the having the oscars despite the fire - A lot of people in LA WANT the Oscars to happen. Lots of people worked for quite a while on that event and it does help having a paying gig, especially now.

I quite liked The Substance, but that making onto the Best Picture list is a joke. As is Demi Moore's performance.

I mean kudos to her for baring all at her age, that was brave, but she's only in half the movie and has extremely limited dialogue.
