You're going to struggle to find art that isn't political, being a medium of expression. Unless it's really shit art, I suppose.
Shit argument imo. Countless pieces of art aren't inherently political. You can read politics into absolutely anything if you want that's true, but most are at least more subtle about it. He could be talking about the presenters/actors as well. Many will try to give some sort of opinion on current events while accepting their award for playing pretend well.

I didn't say that about the art itself being political. Its the Oscars trying to lecture us about politics.

I think Gervais is on the money with a lot of his Golden Globes presenting, but I also think that if you look at the films that win awards at the oscars, a lot of awards go to films which are grounded in telling stories of real people, real struggles or loves or emotions, and it's ok for filmmakers to express some of why they chose to work on that piece of art, what it means to them or how it is relevant to the world we live in.

Obviously more justifiable if you've made something like Schindler's List.

It'd be really amazing to make a film like that and accept the award as being all about you, and not about the subject and stories you brought to life.

EDIT:

However, I must admit the Joe Pesci acceptance speech is fantastic:

Everyone thinks this is great, and I'm one of them, but if all awards were accepted like this, they'd struggle even more with getting a tv audience than they do already.

Sean Baker really outdid himself, well deserved. I feel like he retroactively got an award for his last 5 films 👏👏👏

My favorite director ever, taking these crazy slice of life situations and turning them on their head is something he just excels at.

Red Rocket is also probably my personal favorite of his, just because it depicts *that part* of Texas perfectly.

It doesn't make sense that someone like Elton John, who has been recognized for his music and whose songs have been referenced in series and movies and who has also composed songs for movies that even became cult, ends up losing against a sh1t like Emilia Pérez.

That's where they should have applied to Emilia Pérez the "I was wrong, it was for..."

Yes, and Steven Spielberg should win best director every year too.

There is definitely a vibe of "this award is really a lifetime achievement!" as well as a "hey this newcomer is gonna win and we will never hear from them again" that splits the awardees into two camps.

I dislike that Pixar seems to win just for showing up but I also dislike that seasoned pros at the top of their game can miss an award for some rando.
