I like the show and love Brolin, but I hate the trope that someone discovers something amazing and keeps it for themselves / tries to hide it for whatever bullshit reason.

Agreed. But then the show would require a science oriented writer instead of the interpersonal conflict interested one we have. Somehow I'm beginning to doubt that a quantum physics PhD was consulted on this project.

All 8 episodes episodes of S1 are available now for those interested. I enjoyed it. Had a Western Twin Peaks feel.
While there are parts that are extremely slow and not worthwhile, I think the main drama is great, edge of your seat stuff. Basically, whenever Brolin is on screen, it's a great fucking show. Every two episodes gets a new director, which explains the inconsistency. Imo, episodes 5 and 6 are garbage compared to the rest (especially 5). Season finale has one hell of a cliff hanger and a lot of No Country For Old Men vibes.

There is a great reveal about a Rollins character. But I found the show pretty interesting 75% of the time.
The one guy singing all the time was weird.

Yeah, there were slow aspects, I think especially Rhett and that girl he was crushing on, that whole storyline was a snoozefest and could have been entirely cut. Probably too much time dedicated to Rhett's rodeo shit overall too. But man the good weird stuff just got better as the show went along, this was overall a really fun and unique show. Though, I did see that one finale "reveal" coming a long time ago, so no surprise there - though Royal's reveal about his origin was unexpected. Really hope this gets a second season.

Agreed. A few of the side stories went nowhere and weren't interesting in the least bit. Thankfully, the main story was good enough to make me power through them. Actually, I began to fast forward through most of the side stories and it made little difference in the end. I'm also hoping we get a second season. So many questions left unanswered.

I'm a big fan of the book it's based on (and why that wasn't publized more is a mystery) so i have high hopes for it. If I like the next couple of eps I may even start a thread for it.

That's just how most TV shows are produced. Even a legendary show like Breaking Bad had multiple directors in one season. If I had to guess, it's probably just a matter of efficiency since they have to film x amount of hours per season.

I enjoyed it but I do think it was far too meandering and surreal at certain points. Can see why that would turn a big portion of the audience off.

Shame that it was cancelled, although it did love to linger a little too much.
There is a fine line to balance between mystery and satisfaction, I thought the show did an ok job at it, but obviously it didn't do it well enough.
this is the nature with Sci-fi though, you either get one or two seasons or you are stupidly successful, there's no real middleground.

Thats mostly due to the cost of sci-fi shows, traditionally they were always on the higher end so they had to hit big or get wrapped up.
But my issue these days is the number of shows that seem like they were pitched like this:
writer: "Hey exec, I want to make a show about a dad who lost his son, in a tragic way that we will stretch out over 3 seasons, as he processes his grief he meets lots of other very damaged people, all with mysterious pasts we will stretch out over 4 seasons, and eventually they all love or hate each other."
Exec: "Awesome! But no one is gonna watch that shit! We need a hook to bring in a desperate audience that always shows up for their stuff and thats the sci-fi genre audience! So you need to add a genre hook to your show."
writer: "Uh, ok. How about if the dad is actually a werewolf? We will show him change once in the pilot and then NEVER address it till the season finale as a cliffhanger. We will not explore werewolf lore, have him try to find a cure, embrace his nature, or really do ANYTHING about lycanthropy (I'm shocked I even know this word!!) and I won't change anything about my scripts other than about 5 seconds of teaser every few eps to string this genre audience along."
Exec: "PERFECT! Lets order a full season!"
Thats my beef with a lot of the recent genre stuff. They do very little with the hook, its just set dressing around their character based mysteries and drama. Now obviously any sci-fi concept needs human conflict and emotion to sustain it, but the difference between a show like Stargate, which explores the gates and their ramifications CONSTANTLY even while it develops the dynamics of the cast (but has a proper ensemble composition and isn't relying on constant mystery boxes to fuel audience engagement) and a lot of the recent "prestige genre" shows is glaring.
